making a profound reverence察 Madam察─ said he察 since I have had the
honor to serve you察I know not any other happiness that I can wish for。;
;I should be sorry察─ replied she察 not to be of service to you in
something察 consider察 it is in my power to bestow on you long life察
kingdoms察riches察to give you mines of diamonds and houses full of gold察I
can make you an excellent orator察poet察musician察and painter察or察if you
desire it察a spirit of the air察the water察or the earth。;
Here Leander interrupted her。 ;Permit me察 madam察─ said he察 to ask
you what benefit it would be to me to be a spirit拭─
;Much察─replied the fairy察 you would be invisible when you pleased察
and might in an instant traverse the whole earth察you would be able to fly
without wings察to descend into the abyss of the earth without dying察and
walk at the bottom of the sea without being drowned察 nor doors察 nor
windows察 though fast shut and locked察 could hinder you from entering
anywhere察and whenever you had a mind察you might resume your natural
form。;
;Oh察madam ─cried Leander察 then let me be a spirit察I am going to
travel察and should prefer it above all those other advantages you have so
generously offered me。;
Gentilla thereupon stroking his face three times察 Be a spirit察─said she察
and then察 embracing him察 she gave him a little red cap with a plume of
feathers。 ;When you put on this cap you shall be invisible察but when you
take it off you shall again become visible。;
Leander察 overjoyed察 put his little red cap upon his head and wished
himself in the forest察that he might gather some wild roses which he had
observed there此his body immediately became as light as thought察he flew
through the window like a bird察though察in flying over the river察he was not
without fear lest he should fall into it察and the power of the fairy not be
able to save him。 But he arrived in safety at the rose´ bushes察plucked the

three roses察and returned immediately to his chamber察presented his roses
to the fairy察 overjoyed that his first experiments had succeeded so well。
She bade him keep the roses察for that one of them would supply him with
money whenever he wanted it察 that if he put the other into his mistress'
bosom察he would know whether she was faithful or not察and that the third
would keep him always in good health。 Then察without staying to receive
his thanks察she wished him success in his travels and disappeared。
Leander察infinitely pleased察settled his affairs察mounted the finest horse
in the stable察called Gris´de´line察and attended by some of his servants in
livery察made his return to court。 Now you must know Furibon had given
out that had it not been for his courage Leander would have murdered him
when they were a´hunting察 so the king察being importuned by the queen察
gave orders that Leander should be apprehended。 But when he came察he
showed so much courage and resolution that Furibon ran to the queen's
chamber and prayed her to order him to be seized。 The queen察who was
extremely diligent in everything that her son desired察went immediately to
the king。 Furibon察 being impatient to know what would be resolved察
followed her察 but stopped at the door and laid his ear to the keyhole察
putting his hair aside that he might the better hear what was said。 At the
same time察Leander entered the court´hall of the palace with his red cap
upon his head察and perceiving Furibon listening at the door of the king's
chamber察 he took a nail and a hammer and nailed his ear to the door。
Furibon began to roar察so that the queen察hearing her son's voice察ran and
opened the door察and察pulling it hastily察tore her son's ear from his head。
Half out of her wits察she set him in her lap察took up his ear察kissed it察and
clapped it again upon its place察but the invisible Leander察seizing upon a
handful of twigs察with which they corrected the king's little dogs察gave the
queen several lashes upon her hands察 and her son as many on the nose此
upon which the queen cried out察 Murder murder ─and the king looked
about察and the people came running in察but nothing was to be seen。 Some
cried that the queen was mad察and that her madness proceeded from her
grief to see that her son had lost one ear察and the king was as ready as any
to believe it察so that when she came near him he avoided her察which made
a very ridiculous scene。 Leander察then leaving the chamber察went into the

garden察and there察assuming his own shape察he boldly began to pluck the
queen's cherries察apricots察strawberries察and flowers察though he knew she
set such a high value on them that it was as much as a man's life was
worth to touch one。 The gardeners察 all amazed察 came and told their
majesties that Prince Leander was making havoc of all the fruits and
flowers in the queen's gardens
;What insolence ─said the queen此then turning to Furibon察 my pretty
child察 forget the pain of thy ear but for a moment察 and fetch that vile
wretch hither察take our guards察both horse and foot察seize him察and punish
him as he deserves。;
Furibon察encouraged by his mother察and attended by a great number of
armed soldiers察entered the garden and saw Leander察who察taking refuge
under a tree察pelted them all with oranges。 But when they came running
toward him察thinking to have seized him察he was not to be seen察he had
slipped behind Furibon察who was in a bad condition already。 But Leander
played him one trick more察for he pushed him down upon the gravel walk察
and frightened him so that the soldiers had to take him up察carry him away察
and put him to bed。
Satisfied with this revenge察he returned to his servants察who waited for
him察and giving them money察sent them back to his castle察that none might
know the secret of his red cap and roses。 As yet he had not determined
whither to go察 however察 he mounted his fine horse Gris´ de´line察 and察
laying the reins upon his neck察 let him take his own road此 at length he
arrived in a forest察where he stopped to shelter himself from the heat。 He
had not been above a minute there before he heard a lamentable noise of
sighing and sobbing察 and looking about him察 beheld a man察 who ran察
stopped察then ran again察sometimes crying察sometimes silent察then tearing
his hair察then thumping his breast like some unfortunate madman。 Yet he
seemed to be both handsome and young此 his garments had been
magnificent察but he had torn them all to tatters。 The prince察 moved with
compassion察 made toward him察 and mildly accosted him。 ;Sir察─ said he察
;your condition appears so deplorable that I must ask the cause of your
sorrow察assuring you of every assistance in my power。;
;Oh察sir察─answered the young man察 nothing can cure my grief察this

day my dear mistress is to be sacrificed to a rich old ruffian of a husband
who will make her miserable。;
;Does she love you察then拭─asked Leander。
;I flatter myself so察─answered the young man。
;Where is she拭─continued Leander。
;In the castle at the end of this forest察─replied the lover。
;Very well察─said Leander察 stay you here till I come again察and in a
little while I will bring you good news。;
He then put on his little red cap and wished himself in the castle。 He
had hardly got thither before he heard all sorts of music察he entered into a
great room察where the friends and kindred of the old man and the young
lady were assembled。 No one could look more amiable than she察but the
paleness of her complexion察 the melancholy that appeared in her
countenance察and the tears that now and then dropped察as it were by stealth
from her eyes察betrayed the trouble of her mind。
Leander now became invisible察and placed himself in a corner of the
room。 He soon perceived the father and mother of the bride察and coming
behind the mother's chair察 whispered in her ear察 If you marry your
daughter to that old dotard察before eight days are over you shall certainly
die。; The woman察frightened to hear such a terrible sentence pronounced
upon her察and yet not know from whence it came察gave a loud shriek and
dropped upon the floor。 Her husband asked what ailed her此she cried that
she was a dead woman if the marriage of her daughter went forward察and
therefore she would not consent to it for all the world。 Her husband
laughed at her and called her a fool。 But the invisible Leander accosting
the man察threatened him in the same way察which frightened him so terribly
that he also insisted on the marriage being broken off。 When the lover
complained察Leander trod hard upon his gouty toes and rang such an alarm
in his ears that察not being able any longer to hear himself speak察away he
limped察glad enough to go。 The real lover soon appeared察and he and hi
