told her how he had been cursed by a wicked sorceress察and that no one

but the king's youngest daughter could release him from his enchantment

and take him out of the well。

The next day a carriage drove up to the palace gates with eight white

horses察 having white feathers on their heads and golden reins。 Behind it

stood the servant of the young prince察 called the faithful Henry。 This

faithful Henry had been so grieved when his master was changed into a

frog that he had been compelled to have three iron bands fastened round

his heart察lest it should break。 Now the carriage came to convey the prince

to his kingdom察so the faithful Henry lifted in the bride and bridegroom

and mounted behind察full of joy at his lord's release。 But when they had

gone a short distance察the prince heard behind him a noise as if something

was breaking。 He cried out察 Henry察the carriage is breaking ─

But Henry replied此 No察sir察it is not the carriage but one of the bands

from my heart察 with which I was forced to bind it up察 or it would have

broken with grief while you sat as a frog at the bottom of the well。;

Twice again this happened察and the prince always thought the carriage

was breaking察but it was only the bands breaking off from the heart of the

faithful Henry察out of joy that his lord察the frog´prince察was a frog no more。

                           CLEVER ALICE

ONCE upon a time there was a man who had a daughter who was

called ;Clever Alice察─and when she was grown up察her father said察 We

must see about her marrying。;

;Yes察─replied her mother察 whenever a young man shall appear who is

worthy of her。;

At last a certain youth察by name Hans察came from a distance to make a

proposal of marriage察but he required one condition察that the clever Alice

should be very prudent。

;Oh察─ said her father察 no fear of that she has got a head full of

brains察─and the mother added察 ah察she can see the wind blow up the street察

and hear the flies cough ─

;Very well察─replied Hans察 but remember察if she is not very prudent察I

will not take her。; Soon afterward they sat down to dinner察and her mother

said察 Alice察go down into the cellar and draw some beer。;

So Clever Alice took the jug down from the wall察and went into the

cellar察jerking the lid up and down on her way察to pass away the time。 As

soon as she got downstairs she drew a stool and placed it before the cask察

in order that she might not have to stoop察for she thought stooping might

in some way injure her back and give it an undesirable bend。 Then she

placed the can before her and turned the tap察 and while the beer was

running察as she did not wish her eyes to be idle察she looked about upon the

wall above and below。 Presently she perceived察 after much peeping into

this corner and that corner察a hatchet察which the bricklayers had left behind拭

sticking out of the ceiling right above her head。 At the sight of this Clever

Alice began to cry察saying察 Oh if I marry Hans察and we have a child察and

he grows up察and we send him into the cellar to draw beer察the hatchet will

fall upon his head and kill him察─and so she sat there weeping with all her

might over the impending misfortune。

Meanwhile the good folks upstairs were waiting for the beer察 but as

Clever Alice did not come察her mother told the maid to go and see what

she was stopping for。 The maid went down into the cellar and found Alice

sitting before the cask crying heartily察and she asked察 Alice察what are you

                                            118

weeping about拭─

;Ah察─she replied察 have I not cause拭If I marry Hans察and we have a

child察and he grows up察and we send him here to draw beer察that hatchet

will fall upon his head and kill him。;

;Oh察─said the maid察 what a clever Alice we have ─And sitting down察

she began to weep察too察for the misfortune that was to happen。

After a while察when the servant did not return察the good folks above

began to feel very thirsty察so the husband told the boy to go down into the

cellar and see what had become of Alice and the maid。 The boy went down察

and there sat Clever Alice and the maid both crying察 so he asked the

reason察and Alice told him the same tale察of the hatchet that was to fall on

her child察 if she married Hans察 and if they had a child。 When she had

finished察 the boy exclaimed察 What a clever Alice we have ─ and fell

weeping and howling with the others。

Upstairs they were still waiting察and the husband said察when the boy

did not return察 Do you go down察wife察into the cellar and see why Alice

stays so long。; So she went down察and finding all three sitting there crying察

asked the reason察 and Alice told her about the hatchet which must

inevitably fall upon the head of her son。 Then the mother likewise

exclaimed察 Oh察what a clever Alice we have ─and察sitting down察began to

weep as much as any of the rest。

Meanwhile the husband waited for his wife's return察but at last he felt

so very thirsty that he said察 I must go myself down into the cellar and see

what is keeping our Alice。; As soon as he entered the cellar察there he found

the four sitting and crying together察and when he heard the reason察he also

exclaimed察 Oh察what a clever Alice we have ─and sat down to cry with

the whole strength of his lungs。

All this time the bridegroom above sat waiting察 but when nobody

returned察he thought they must be waiting for him察and so he went down to

see what was the matter。 When he entered察there sat the five crying and

groaning察each one in a louder key than his neighbor。

     ;What misfortune has happened拭─he asked。

;Ah察dear Hans ─cried Alice察 if you and I should marry one another察

and have a child察and he grew up察and we察perhaps察send him down to this

cellar to tap the beer察the hatchet which has been left sticking up there may

fall on his head察and so kill him察and do you not think this is enough to

weep about拭─

;Now察─said Hans察 more prudence than this is not necessary for my

housekeeping察because you are such a clever Alice察I will have you for my

wife。; And察taking her hand察he led her home察and celebrated the wedding

directly。

After they had been married a little while察 Hans察 said one morning察

;Wife察 I will go out to work and earn some money察 do you go into the

field and gather some corn wherewith to make bread。;

;Yes察─she answered察 I will do so察dear Hans。; And when he was gone察

she cooked herself a nice mess of pottage to take with her。 As she came to

the field察she said to herself察 What shall I do拭Shall I cut first察or eat first拭

Aye察I will eat first ─Then she ate up the contents of her pot察and when it

was finished察she thought to herself察 Now察shall I reap first or sleep first拭

Well察I think I will have a nap ─and so she laid herself down among the

corn察and went to sleep。

Meanwhile Hans returned home察 but Alice did not come察 and so he

said察 Oh察what a prudent Alice I have She is so industrious that she does

not even come home to eat anything。; By and by察however察evening came

on察and still she did not return察so Hans went out to see how much she had

reaped察but察behold察nothing at all察and there lay Alice fast asleep among

the corn So home he ran very fast察 and brought a net with little bells

hanging on it察which he threw over her head while she still slept on。 When

he had done this察 he went back again and shut to the house door察 and察

seating himself on his stool察began working very industriously。

At last察when it was nearly dark察the clever Alice awoke察and as soon

as she stood up察the net fell all over her hair察and the bells jingled at every

step she took。 This quite frightened her察and she began to doubt whether

she were really Clever Alice察and said to herself察 Am I she察or am I not拭─

This was a question she could not answer察and she stood still a long while

considering about it。 At last she thought she would go home and ask

whether she was really herself supposing somebody would be able to tell

her。

                                        The Little Lame Prince

When she came up to the house door it was shut察so she tapped at the

window察and asked察 Hans察is Alice within拭─ Yes察─he replied察 she is。; At

which answer she became really terrified察 and exclaiming察 Ah察 heaven察

then I am not Alice ─ she ran up to another house察 intending to ask the

same question。 But as soon as the folks within heard the jingling of the

bells in her net察 they refused to open their doors察 and nobody would

receive her。 So she ran straight away from the village察and no one has ever

seen her since。
