;Are you very dull here拭─asked the little old woman。
;Not particularly察thank you察godmother。 I have plenty to eat and drink察
and my lessons to do察and my books to readlots of books。;
;And you want nothing拭─
;Nothing。 Yesperhaps If you please察godmother察could you bring
me just one more thing拭─
;What sort of thing ─
;A little boy to play with。;
The old woman looked very sad。 ;Just the thing察alas I which I cannot
give you。 My child察I cannot alter your lot in any way察but I can help you
to bear it。;
;Thank you。 But why do you talk of bearing it拭 I have nothing to
bear。;
;My poor little man ─said the old woman in the very tenderest tone of
her tender voice。 ;Kiss me ─
;What is kissing拭─asked the wondering child。
His godmother took him in her arms and embraced him many times。
By and by he kissed her back againat first awkwardly and shyly察 then
with all the strength of his warm little heart。
;You are better to cuddle than even my white kitten察I think。 Promise
me that you will never go away察─
;I must察but I will leave a present behind mesomething as good as
myself to amuse you察something that will take you wherever you want to
go察and show you all that you wish to see。;
;What is it拭─
;A traveling´cloak。;
The Prince's countenance fell。 ;I don't want a cloak察for I never go out。
Sometimes nurse hoists me on to the roof察 and carries me round by the
parapet察but that is all。 I can't walk察you know察as she does。;
;The more reason why you should ride察 and besides察 this traveling´
cloak;
;Hushshe's coming。;
There sounded outside the room door a heavy step and a grumpy voice察
21

and a rattle of plates and dishes。
;It's my nurse察and she is bringing my dinner察but I don't want dinner
at allI only want you。 Will her coming drive you away察godmother拭─
;Perhaps察but only for a little while。 Never mind察all the bolts and bars
in the world couldn't keep me out。 I'd fly in at the window察 or down
through the chimney。 Only wish for me察and I come。;
;Thank you察─said Prince Dolor察but almost in a whisper察for he was
very uneasy at what might happen next。 His nurse and his godmother
what would they say to one another拭 how would they look at one
anothertwo such different faces此one harsh´lined察sullen察cross察and sad察
the other sweet and bright and calm as a summer evening before the dark
begins。
When the door was flung open察Prince Dolor shut his eyes察trembling
all over察opening them again察he saw he need fear nothinghis lovely old
godmother had melted away just like the rainbow out of the sky察as he had
watched it many a time。 Nobody but his nurse was in the room。
;What a muddle your Royal Highness is sitting in察─said she sharply。
;Such a heap of untidy books察and what's this rubbish拭─knocking a little
bundle that lay beside them。 ;Oh察nothing察nothinggive it me ─cried the
Prince察and察darting after it察he hid it under his pinafore察and then pushed it
quickly into his pocket。 Rubbish as it was察it was left in the place where
she sat察 and might be something belonging to herhis dear察 kind
godmother察whom already he loved with all his lonely察tender察passionate
heart。
It was察though he did not know this察his wonderful traveling´cloak。

CHAPTER IV
And what of the traveling´cloak拭What sort of cloak was it察and what
A good did it do the Prince拭
Stay察 and I'll tell you all about it。 Outside it was the commonest´
looking bundle imaginableshabby and small察 and the instant Prince
Dolor touched it察it grew smaller still察dwindling down till he could put it
in his trousers pocket察like a handkerchief rolled up into a ball。 He did this
at once察for fear his nurse should see it察and kept it there all dayall night察
too。 Till after his next morning's lessons he had no opportunity of
examining his treasure。
When he did察it seemed no treasure at all察but a mere piece of cloth
circular in form察dark green in colorthat is察if it had any color at all察being
so worn and shabby察 though not dirty。 It had a split cut to the center察
forming a round hole for the neckand that was all its shape察the shape察in
fact察 of those cloaks which in South America are called ponchosvery
simple察but most graceful and convenient。
Prince Dolor had never seen anything like it。 In spite of his
disappointment察he examined it curiously察spread it out on the door察then
arranged it on his shoulders。 It felt very warm and comfortable察but it was
so exceedingly shabbythe only shabby thing that the Prince had ever
seen in his life。
;And what use will it be to me拭─ said he sadly。 ;I have no need of
outdoor clothes察as I never go out。 Why was this given me察I wonder拭and
what in the world am I to do with it拭She must be a rather funny person察
this dear godmother of mine。;
Nevertheless察because she was his godmother察and had given him the
cloak察he folded it carefully and put it away察poor and shabby as it was察
hiding it in a safe corner of his top cupboard察 which his nurse never
meddled with。 He did not want her to find it察 or to laugh at it or at his
godmotheras he felt sure she would察if she knew all。
There it lay察and by and by he forgot all about it察nay察I am sorry to say
that察being but a child察and not seeing her again察he almost forgot his sweet
old godmother察or thought of her only as he did of the angels or fairies that

he read of in his books察and of her visit as if it had been a mere dream of
the night。
There were times察certainly察when he recalled her此of early mornings察
like that morning when she appeared beside him察and late evenings察when
the gray twilight reminded him of the color of her hair and her pretty soft
garments察 above all察 when察 waking in the middle of the night察 with the
stars peering in at his window察 or the moonlight shining across his little
bed察 he would not have been surprised to see her standing beside it察
looking at him with those beautiful tender eyes察which seemed to have a
pleasantness and comfort in them different from anything he had ever
known。
But she never came察 and gradually she slipped out of his memory
only a boy's memory察after all察until something happened which made him
remember her察and want her as he had never wanted anything before。
Prince Dolor fell ill。 He caughthis nurse could not tell howa
complaint common to the people of Nomansland察called the doldrums察as
unpleasant as measles or any other of our complaints察 and it made him
restless察 cross察 and disagreeable。 Even when a little better察 he was too
weak to enjoy anything察 but lay all day long on his sofa察 fidgeting his
nurse extremely while察 in her intense terror lest he might die察 she
fidgeted him still more。 At last察seeing he really was getting well察she left
him to himselfwhich he was most glad of察 in spite of his dullness and
dreariness。 There he lay察alone察quite alone。
Now and then an irritable fit came over him察in which he longed to get
up and do something察or to go somewherewould have liked to imitate his
white kittenjump down from the tower and run away察taking the chance
of whatever might happen。
Only one thing察 alas was likely to happen察 for the kitten察 he
remembered察had four active legs察while he
;I wonder what my godmother meant when she looked at my legs and
sighed so bitterly拭I wonder why I can't walk straight and steady like my
nurse only I wouldn't like to have her great察noisy察clumping shoes。 Still it
would be very nice to move about quicklyperhaps to fly察like a bird察like
that string of birds I saw the other day skimming across the sky察one after

the other。;
These were the passage´birdsthe only living creatures that ever
crossed the lonely plain察 and he had been much interested in them察
wonder´ ing whence they came and whither they were going。
;How nice it must be to be a bird If legs are no good察why cannot one
have wings拭 People have wings when they dieperhaps察 I wish I were
dead察that I do。 I am so tired察so tired察and nobody cares for me。 Nobody
ever did care for me察 except perhaps my godmother。 Godmother察 dear察
have you quite forsaken me拭─
He stretched himself wearily察 gathered himself up察 and dropped his
head upon his hands察as he did so察he felt somebody kiss him at the back
of his neck察and察turning察found t
