but savory pot herbs to make a stuffing for roast meat察or to flavor a stew
with。;
; Well said ─ cried the others。 ;But I'll warrant you there's a kitchen
garden in the rear of the palace。;
At one place they came to a crystal spring察and paused to drink at it for
want of liquor which they liked better。 Looking into its bosom察they beheld
their own faces dimly reflected察but so extravagantly distorted by the gush
and motion of the water察that each one of them appeared to be laughing at
himself and all his companions。 So ridiculous were these images of
themselves察indeed察that they did really laugh aloud察and could hardly be
grave again as soon as they wished。 And after they had drank察they grew
still merrier than before。
;It has a twang of the wine cask in it察─said one察smacking his lips。
;Make haste ─cried his fellows此 we'll find the wine cask itself at the
palace察and that will be better than a hundred crystal fountains。;
Then they quickened their pace察and capered for joy at the thought of
the savory banquet at which they hoped to be guests。 But Eurylochus told
them that he felt as if he were walking in a dream。
;If I am really awake察─continued he察 then察in my opinion察we are on
the point of meeting with some stranger adventure than any that befell us
in the cave of Polyphemus察or among the gigantic man´eating Laestrygons察
or in the windy palace of King Aeolus察which stands on a brazen´walled
island。 This kind of dreamy feeling always comes over me before any
wonderful occurrence。 If you take my advice察you will turn back。;
;No察no察─answered his comrades察snuffing the air察in which the scent
from the palace kitchen was now very perceptible。 ;We would not turn
back察though we were certain that the king of the Laestrygons察as big as a
mountain察 would sit at the head of the table察 and huge Polyphemus察 the
one´eyed Cyclops察at its foot。;
At length they came within full sight of the palace察which proved to be
very large and lofty察with a great number of airy pinnacles upon its roof。
Though it was midday察and the sun shone brightly over the marble front察
yet its snowy whiteness察and its fantastic style of architecture察made it look
unreal察like the frost work on a window pane察or like the shapes of castles

which one sees among the clouds by moonlight。 But察just then察a puff of
wind brought down the smoke of the kitchen chimney among them察and
caused each man to smell the odor of the dish that he liked best察and察after
scenting it察they thought everything else moonshine察and nothing real save
this palace察and save the banquet that was evidently ready to be served up
in it。
So they hastened their steps towards the portal察 but had not got half
way across the wide lawn察when a pack of lions察tigers察and wolves came
bounding to meet them。 The terrified mariners started back察expecting no
better fate than to be torn to pieces and devoured。 To their surprise and joy察
however察 these wild beasts merely capered around them察 wagging their
tails察offering their heads to be stroked and patted察and behaving just like
so many well´bred house dogs察when they wish to express their delight at
meeting their master察or their master's friends。 The biggest lion licked the
feet of Eurylochus察and every other lion察and every wolf and tiger察singled
out one of his two and twenty followers察whom the beast fondled as if he
loved him better than a beef bone。
But察 for all that察 Eurylochus imagined that he saw something fierce
and savage in their eyes察nor would he have been surprised察at any moment察
to feel the big lion's terrible claws察 or to see each of the tigers make a
deadly spring察 or each wolf leap at the throat of the man whom he had
fondled。 Their mildness seemed unreal察and a mere freak察but their savage
nature was as true as their teeth and claws。
Nevertheless察the men went safely across the lawn with the wild beasts
frisking about them察 and doing no manner of harm察 although察 as they
mounted the steps of the palace察 you might possibly have heard a low
growl察particularly from the wolves察as if they thought it a pity察after all察to
let the strangers pass without so much as tasting what they were made of。
Eurylochus and his followers now passed under a lofty portal察 and
looked through the open doorway into the interior of the palace。 The first
thing that they saw was a spacious hall察and a fountain in the middle of it察
gushing up towards the ceiling out of a marble basin察and falling back into
it with a continual plash。 The water of this fountain察as it spouted upward察
was constantly taking new shapes察not very distinctly察but plainly enough

for a nimble fancy to recognize what they were。 Now it was the shape of a
man in a long robe察 the fleecy whiteness of which was made out of the
fountain's spray察now it was a lion察or a tiger察or a wolf察or an ass察or察as
often as anything else察a hog察wallowing in the marble basin as if it were
his sty。 It was either magic or some very curious machinery that caused the
gushing waterspout to assume all these forms。 But察 before the strangers
had time to look closely at this wonderful sight察their attention was drawn
off by a very sweet and agreeable sound。 A woman's voice was singing
melodiously in another room of the palace察 and with her voice was
mingled the noise of a loom察at which she was probably seated察weaving a
rich texture of cloth察and intertwining the high and low sweetness of her
voice into a rich tissue of harmony。
By and by察the song came to an end察and then察all at once察there were
several feminine voices察talking airily and cheerfully察with now and then a
merry burst of laughter察such as you may always hear when three or four
young women sit at work together。
;What a sweet song that was ─exclaimed one of the voyagers。
;Too sweet察indeed察─ answered Eurylochus察shaking his head。 ;Yet it
was not so sweet as the song of the Sirens察those bird´like damsels who
wanted to tempt us on the rocks察so that our vessel might be wrecked察and
our bones left whitening along the shore。;
;But just listen to the pleasant voices of those maidens察and that buzz
of the loom察as the shuttle passes to and fro察─said another comrade。 ;What
a domestic察household察home´like sound it is Ah察before that weary siege
of Troy察I used to hear the buzzing loom and the women's voices under my
own roof。 Shall I never hear them again拭nor taste those nice little savory
dishes which my dearest wife knew how to serve up拭─
;Tush we shall fare better here察─ said another。 ;But how innocently
those women are babbling together察 without guessing that we overhear
them And mark that richest voice of all察so pleasant and so familiar察but
which yet seems to have the authority of a mistress among them。 Let us
show ourselves at once。 What harm can the lady of the palace and her
maidens do to mariners and warriors like us拭─
;Remember察─ said Eurylochus察 that it was a young maiden who

beguiled three of our friends into the palace of the king of the Laestrygons察
who ate up one of them in the twinkling of an eye。;
No warning or persuasion察however察had any effect on his companions。
They went up to a pair of folding doors at the farther end of the hall察and
throwing them wide open察 passed into the next room。 Eurylochus察
meanwhile察 had stepped behind a pillar。 In the short moment while the
folding doors opened and closed again察 he caught a glimpse of a very
beautiful woman rising from the loom察 and coming to meet the poor
weather´beaten wanderers察with a hospitable smile察and her hand stretched
out in welcome。 There were four other young women察 who joined their
hands and danced merrily forward察 making gestures of obeisance to the
strangers。 They were only less beautiful than the lady who seemed to be
their mistress。 Yet Eurylochus fancied that one of them had sea´green hair察
and that the close´fitting bodice of a second looked like the bark of a tree察
and that both the others had something odd in their aspect察 although he
could not quite determine what it was察 in the little while that he had to
examine them。
The folding doors swung quickly back察and left him standing behind
the pillar察in the solitude of the outer hall。 There Eurylochus waited until
he was quite weary察 and listened eagerly to every sound察 but without
hearing anything that could help him to guess what had become of his
friends。 Footsteps察it is true察seemed to be passing and repassing察in other
parts of the palace。 Then there was a clatter of silver dishes察 or g
