as much farther as he might think it best to go。
Many of these brave fellows had been educated by Chiron察the four´
footed pedagogue察and were therefore old schoolmates of Jason察and knew
him to be a lad of spirit。 The mighty Hercules察whose shoulders afterwards
upheld the sky察was one of them。 And there were Castor and Pollux察the
twin brothers察who were never accused of being chicken´hearted察although
they had been hatched out of an egg察and Theseus察who was so renowned
for killing the Minotaur察 and Lynceus察 with his wonderfully sharp eyes察
which could see through a millstone察or look right down into the depths of
the earth察and discover the treasures that were there察and Orpheus察the very
best of harpers察 who sang and played upon his lyre so sweetly察 that the
brute beasts stood upon their hind legs察and capered merrily to the music。
Yes察and at some of his more moving tunes察the rocks bestirred their moss´
grown bulk out of the ground察 and a grove of forest trees uprooted
themselves察and察 nodding their tops to one another察 performed a country
dance。
One of the rowers was a beautiful young woman察named Atalanta。 who
had been nursed among the mountains by a bear。 So light of foot was this
fair damsel察 that she could step from one foamy crest of a wave to the
foamy crest of another察without wetting more than the sole of her sandal。
She had grown up in a very wild way察and talked much about the rights of
women察and loved hunting and war far better than her needle。 But in my
opinion察the most remarkable of this famous company were two sons of
the North Wind airy youngsters察 and of rather a blustering disposition
who had wings on their shoulders察and察in case of a calm察could puff out

their cheeks察and blow almost as fresh a breeze as their father。 I ought not
to forget the prophets and conjurors察 of whom there were several in the
crew察 and who could foretell what would happen to´morrow or the next
day察 or a hundred years hence察 but were generally quite unconscious of
what was passing at the moment。
Jason appointed Tiphys to be helmsman because he was a star´gazer察
and knew the points of the compass。 Lynceus察 on account of his sharp
sight察was stationed as a look´out in the prow察where he saw a whole day's
sail ahead察but was rather apt to overlook things that lay directly under his
nose。 If the sea only happened to be deep enough察however察Lynceus could
tell you exactly what kind of rocks or sands were at the bottom of it察and
he often cried out to his companions察that they were sailing over heaps of
sunken treasure察 which yet he was none the richer for beholding。 To
confess the truth察few people believed him when he said it。
Well But when the Argonauts察as these fifty brave adventurers were
called察 had prepared everything for the voyage察 an unforeseen difficulty
threatened to end it before it was begun。 The vessel察you must understand察
was so long察and broad察and ponderous察that the united force of all the fifty
was insufficient to shove her into the water。 Hercules察I suppose察had not
grown to his full strength察else he might have set her afloat as easily as a
little boy launches his boat upon a puddle。 But here were these fifty heroes察
pushing察and straining察and growing red in the face察without making the
Argo start an inch。 At last察quite wearied out察they sat themselves down on
the shore exceedingly disconsolate察 and thinking that the vessel must be
left to rot and fall in pieces察and that they must either swim across the sea
or lose the Golden Fleece。
All at once察Jason bethought himself of the galley's miraculous figure´
head。
;O察daughter of the Talking Oak察─cried he察 how shall we set to work
to get our vessel into the water拭─
;Seat yourselves察─ answered the image for it had known what had
ought to be done from the very first察and was only waiting for the question
to be put察─seat yourselves察and handle your oars察and let Orpheus play
upon his harp。;

Immediately the fifty heroes got on board察and seizing their oars察held
them perpendicularly in the air察while Orpheus who liked such a task far
better than rowing swept his fingers across the harp。 At the first ringing
note of the music察they felt the vessel stir。 Orpheus thrummed away briskly察
and the galley slid at once into the sea察dipping her prow so deeply that the
figure´head drank the wave with its marvelous lips察 and rising again as
buoyant as a swan。 The rowers plied their fifty oars察the white foam boiled
up before the prow察 the water gurgled and bubbled in their wake察 while
Orpheus continued to play so lively a strain of music察 that the vessel
seemed to dance over the billows by way of keeping time to it。 Thus
triumphantly did the Argo sail out of the harbor察 amidst the huzzas and
good wishes of everybody except the wicked old Pelias察who stood on a
promontory察 scowling at her察 and wishing that he could blow out of his
lungs the tempest of wrath that was in his heart察 and so sink the galley
with all on board。 When they had sailed above fifty miles over the sea察
Lynceus happened to cast his sharp eyes behind察and said that there was
this bad´hearted king察still perched upon the promontory察and scowling so
gloomily that it looked like a black thunder´cloud in that quarter of the
horizon。
In order to make the time pass away more pleasantly during the
voyage察the heroes talked about the Golden Fleece。 It originally belonged察
it appears察 to a Boeotian ram察 who had taken on his back two children察
when in danger of their lives察and fled with them over land and sea as far
as Colchis。 One of the children察whose name was Helle察fell into the sea
and was drowned。 But the other a little boy察named Phrixus was brought
safe ashore by the faithful ram察who察however察was so exhausted that he
immediately lay down and died。 In memory of this good deed察and as a
token of his true heart察the fleece of the poor dead ram was miraculously
changed to gold察and became one of the most beautiful objects ever seen
on earth。 It was hung upon a tree in a sacred grove察where it had now been
kept I know not how many years察and was the envy of mighty kings察who
had nothing so magnificent in any of their palaces。
If I were to tell you all the adventures of the Argonauts察it would take
me till nightfall察 and perhaps a great deal longer。 There was no lack of

wonderful events察as you may judge from what you have already heard。 At
a certain island察 they were hospitably received by King Cyzicus察 its
sovereign察who made a feast for them察and treated them like brothers。 But
the Argonauts saw that this good king looked downcast and very much
troubled察 and they therefore inquired of him what was the matter。 King
Cyzicus hereupon informed them that he and his subjects were greatly
abused and incommoded by the inhabitants of a neighboring mountain察
who made war upon them察 and killed many people察 and ravaged the
country。 And while they were talking about it察 Cyzicus pointed to the
mountain察and asked Jason and his companions what they saw there。
;I see some very tall objects察─answered Jason察 but they are at such a
distance that I cannot distinctly make out what they are。 To tell your
majesty the truth察they look so very strangely that I am inclined to think
them clouds察which have chanced to take something like human shapes。;
;I see them very plainly察─remarked Lynceus察whose eyes察you know察
were as far´sighted as a telescope。 ;They are a band of enormous giants察
all of whom have six arms apiece察 and a club察 a sword察 or some other
weapon in each of their hands。;
;You have excellent eyes察─ said King Cyzicus。 ;Yes察 they are six´
armed giants察 as you say察 and these are the enemies whom I and my
subjects have to contend with。;
The next day察when the Argonauts were about setting sail察down came
these terrible giants察stepping a hundred yards at a stride察brandishing their
six arms apiece察 and looking formidable察 so far aloft in the air。 Each of
these monsters was able to carry on a whole war by himself察for with one
arm he could fling immense stones察and wield a club with another察and a
sword with a third察while the fourth was poking a long spear at the enemy察
and the fifth and sixth were shooting him with a bow and arrow。 But察
luckily察though the giants were so huge察and had so many arms察they had
each but one heart察 and that no bigger nor braver than the heart of an
ordinary man。 Besides察if they had been like the hundred´armed Briareus察
the brave Argonauts
