are cats察and so are the Ocelots or tiger cats。
Oh察I saw them at the Zoological Gardens。
But no one would bring them over察I should think察except to put them
in the Zoo。
Not unless they were very foolish。
And much stronger and cleverer than the savages of South America。
No察those jaguars and pumus have been in America for ages此 and there
are those who will tell youand I think they have some reason on their
sidethat the jaguar察with his round patches of spots察was once very much
the same as the African and Indian leopard察who can climb trees well。 So
when he got into the tropic forests of America察he took to the trees察and
lived among the branches察 feeding on sloths and monkeys察 and never
coming to the ground for weeks察till he grew fatter and stronger and far
more terrible than his forefathers。 And they will tell you察 too察 that the
puma was察perhapsI only say perhapssomething like the lion察who you
know has no spots。 But when he got into the forests察he found very little
food under the trees察 only a very few deer察 and so he was starved察 and
dwindled down to the poor little sheep´stealing rogue he is now察of whom
nobody is afraid。
Oh察yes I remember now A。 said he and his men killed six in one
day。 But do you think it is all true about the pumas and jaguars拭
My child察I don't say that it is true此 but only that it is likely to be true。
In science we must be cautious and modest察and ready to alter our minds
whenever we learn fresh facts察 only keeping sure of one thing察 that the

truth察when we find it out察will be far more wonderful than any notions of
ours。 See As we have been talking we have got nearly home此 and
luncheon must be ready。

Why are you opening your eyes at me like the dog when he wants to
go out walking拭
Because I want to go out。 But I don't want to go out walking。 I
want to go in the yacht。
In the yacht拭 It does not belong to me。
Oh察that is only fun。 I know everybody is going out in it to see such a
beautiful island full of ferns察and have a picnic on the rocks察and I know
you are going。
Then you know more than I do myself。
But I heard them say you were going。
Then they know more than I do myself。
But would you not like to go拭
I might like to go very much indeed察but as I have been knocked about
at sea a good deal察 and perhaps more than I intend to be again察 it is no
novelty to me察and there might be other things which I liked still better此
for instance察spending the afternoon with you。
Then am I not to go拭
I think not。 Don't pull such a long face此 but be a man察and make up
your mind to it察as the geese do to going barefoot。
But why may I not go拭
Because I am not Madam How察but your Daddy。
What can that have to do with it拭
If you asked Madam How察do you know what she would answer in a
moment察as civilly and kindly as could be拭 She would sayOh yes察go
by all means察and please yourself察my pretty little man。 My world is the
Paradise which the Irishman talked of察 in which ;a man might do what
was right in the sight of his own eyes察and what was wrong too察as he liked
it。;
Then Madam How would let me go in the yacht拭
Of course she would察or jump overboard when you were in it察or put

your finger in the fire察and your head afterwards察or eat Irish spurge察and
die like the salmon察or anything else you liked。 Nobody is so indulgent as
Madam How此 and she would be the dearest old lady in the world察but for
one ugly trick that she has。 She never tells any one what is coming察but
leaves them to find it out for themselves。 She lets them put their fingers
in the fire察and never tells them that they will get burnt。
But that is very cruel and treacherous of her。
My boy察our business is not to call hard names察but to take things as we
find them察as the Highlandman said when he ate the braxy mutton。 Now
shall I察because I am your Daddy察tell you what Madam How would not
have told you拭 When you get on board the yacht察you will think it all
very pleasant for an hour察 as long as you are in the bay。 But presently
you will get a little bored察and run about the deck察and disturb people察and
want to sit here察 there察 and everywhere察 which I should not like。 And
when you get beyond that headland察you will find the great rollers coming
in from the Atlantic察and the cutter tossing and heaving as you never felt
before察under a burning sun。 And then my merry little young gentleman
will begin to feel a little sick察and then very sick察and more miserable than
he ever felt in his life察and wish a thousand times over that he was safe at
home察even doing sums in long division察and he will give a great deal of
trouble to various kind ladieswhich no one has a right to do察if he can
help it。
Of course I do not wish to be sick此only it looks such beautiful
weather。
And so it is此 but don't fancy that last night's rain and wind can have
passed without sending in such a swell as will frighten you察when you see
the cutter climbing up one side of a wave察 and running down the other察
Madam How tells me that察though she will not tell you yet。 Then why do
they go out拭
Because they are accustomed to it。 They have come hither all round
from Cowes察past the Land's End察and past Cape Clear察and they are not
afraid or sick either。 But shall I tell you how you would end this
eveningat least so I suspect。 Lying miserable in a stuffy cabin察on a
sofa察 and not quite sure whether you were dead or alive察 till you were

bundled into a boat about twelve o'clock at night察when you ought to be
safe asleep察and come home cold察and wet察and stupid察and ill察and lie in
bed all to´morrow。
But will they be wet and cold拭
I cannot be sure察 but from the look of the sky there to westward察 I
think some of them will be。 So do you make up your mind to stay with
me。 But if it is fine and smooth to´morrow察perhaps we may row down
the bay察and see plenty of wonderful things。
But why is it that Madam How will not tell people beforehand what
will happen to them察as you have told me拭
Now I will tell you a great secret察which察alas every one has not found
out yet。 Madam How will teach you察but only by experience。 Lady Why
will teach you察but by something very differentby something which has
been calledand I know no better names for itgrace and inspiration察by
putting into your heart feelings which no man察not even your father and
mother察can put there察by making you quick to love what is right察and hate
what is wrong察simply because they are right and wrong察though you don't
know why they are right and wrong察 by making you teachable察 modest察
reverent察ready to believe those who are older and wiser than you when
they tell you what you could never find out for yourself此and so you will
be prudent察 that is provident察 foreseeing察 and know what will happen if
you do so´and´so察and therefore what is really best and wisest for you。
But why will she be kind enough to do that for me拭
For the very same reason that I do it。 For God's sake。 Because God
is your Father in heaven察as I am your father on earth察and He does not
wish His little child to be left to the hard teaching of Nature and Law察but
to be helped on by many察many unsought and undeserved favours察such as
are rightly called ;Means of Grace察─and above all by the Gospel and good
news that you are God's child察and that God loves you察and has helped and
taught you察and will help you and teach you察in a thousand ways of which
you are not aware察if only you will be a wise child察and listen to Lady Why察
when she cries from her Palace of Wisdom察and the feast which she has
prepared察 Whoso is simple let him turn in hither察─and says to him who
wants understanding;Come察 eat of my bread察 and drink of the wine

which I have mingled。;
;Counsel is mine察 and sound wisdom此 I am understanding察 I have
strength。 By me kings reign察and princes decree justice。 By me princes
rule察and nobles察even all the judges of the earth。 I love them that love
me察and those that seek me early shall find me。 Riches and honour are
with me察yea察durable riches and righteousness。;
Yes察I will try and listen to Lady Why此 but what will happen if I do
not拭
That will happen to you察 my childbut God forbid it ever should
happenwhich happens to wicked kings and rulers察and all men察even the
greatest and cleverest察if they do not choose to reign by Lady W
