EM察THE INNUMERABLE COMPANY OF ANGELS察AND GOD THE JUDGE OF ALL察AND THE SPIRITS OF JUST MEN MADE PERFECT察AND JESUS察 have been sweet unto me in this place此 I have seen that here察that I am persuaded I shall never察while in this world察be able to express此 I have seen a truth in this scripture察WHOM HAVING NOT SEEN察YE LOVE察IN WHOM察THOUGH NOW YOU SEE HIM NOT察YET BELIEVING察 YE REJOICE WITH JOY UNSPEAKABLE察AND FULL OF GLORY。 1 Pet。 i。 8。
。 I never knew what it was for God to stand by me at all turns察 and at every offer of Satan to afflict me察etc。察as I have found Him since I came in hither此 for look how fears have presented themselves察so have supports and encouragements察yea察when I have started察even as it were察at nothing else but my shadow察yet God察 as being very tender of me察hath not suffered me to be molested察 but would with one scripture or another察strengthen me against all察 insomuch that I have often said察WERE IT LAWFUL察I COULD PRAY FOR GREATER TROUBLE察FOR THE GREATER COMFORT'S SAKE。 Eccl。 vii。 14察2 Cor。 i。 5。
。 Before I came to prison察I saw what was coming察and had especially two considerations warm upon my heart察the first was察 how to be able to encounter death察should that be here my portion。 For the first of these察that scripture察Col。 i。 11察was great information to me察namely察to pray to God TO BE STRENGTHENED WITH ALL MIGHT察ACCORDING TO HIS GLORIOUS POWER察UNTO ALL PATIENCE AND LONG´SUFFERING WITH JOYFULNESS。 I could seldom go to prayer before I was imprisoned察but for not so little as a year together察this sentence察or sweet petition would察as it were察thrust itself into my mind察and persuade me察that if ever I would go through long´ suffering察I must have all patience察especially if I would endure it joyfully。
。 As to the second consideration察that saying 2 Cor。 i。 9 was of great use to me察BUT WE HAD THE SENTENCE OF DEATH IN OURSELVES察THAT WE SHOULD NOT TRUST IN OURSELVES察BUT IN GOD察WHICH RAISETH THE DEAD。 By this scripture I was made to see察That if ever I would suffer rightly察I must first pass a sentence of death upon every thing that can properly be called a thing of this life察 even to reckon myself察my wife察my children察my health察my enjoyments察and all as dead to me察and myself as dead to them。
。 The second was to live upon God that is invisible察as Paul said in another place察the way not to faint is察TO LOOK NOT ON THE THINGS THAT ARE SEEN察BUT AT THE THINGS THAT ARE NOT SEEN察FOR THE THINGS THAT ARE SEEN ARE TEMPORAL察BUT THE THINGS THAT ARE NOT SEEN ARE ETERNAL。 And thus I reasoned with myself察if I provide only for a prison察then the whip comes at unawares察and so doth also the pillory此 Again察if I only provide for these察then I am not fit for banishment。 Further察if I conclude that banishment is the worst察 then if death comes察I am surprised此 so that I see察the best way to go through sufferings察is to trust in God through Christ察as touching the world to come察and as touching this world察TO COUNT THE GRAVE MY HOUSE察TO MAKE MY BED IN DARKNESS察TO SAY TO CORRUPTION察THOU ART MY FATHER察AND TO THE WORM察THOU ART MY MOTHER AND SISTER此 that is察to familiarize these things to me。
。 But notwithstanding these helps察I found myself a man and compassed with infirmities察the parting with my wife and poor children察hath often been to me in this place察as the pulling the flesh from the bones察and that not only because I am somewhat too fond of these great mercies察but also because I should have often brought to my mind the many hardships察miseries察and wants that my poor family was like to meet with察should I be taken from them察 especially my poor blind child察who lay nearer my heart than all besides此 Oh the thoughts of the hardship I thought my poor blind one might go under察would break my heart to pieces。
。 Poor child thought I察what sorrow art thou like to have for thy portion in this world Thou must be beaten察must beg察suffer hunger察cold察nakedness察and a thousand calamities察though I cannot now endure the wind should blow upon thee。 But yet recalling myself察thought I察I must venture you all with God察though it goeth to the quick to leave you此 Oh I saw in this condition I was as a man who was pulling down his house upon the head of his wife and children察yet察thought I察I must do it察I must do it此 and now I thought on those TWO MILCH KINE THAT WERE TO CARRY THE ARK OF GOD INTO ANOTHER COUNTRY察AND TO LEAVE THEIR CALVES BEHIND THEM。 1 Sam。 vi。 10´12。
。 But that which helped me in this temptation察was divers considerations察of which察three in special here I will name察the first was the consideration of these two scriptures察LEAVE THY FATHERLESS CHILDREN察I WILL PRESERVE THEM ALIVE察AND LET THY WIDOWS TRUST IN ME此 and again察THE LORD SAID察VERILY IT SHALL BE WELL WITH THY REMNANT察VERILY察I WILL CAUSE THE ENEMY TO ENTREAT THEE WELL IN THE TIME OF EVIL察AND IN TIME OF AFFLICTION。 Jer。 xlix。 11察xv。 11。
。 I had also this consideration察that if I should not venture all for God察I engaged God to take care of my concernments此 but if I forsook Him and His ways察for fear of any trouble that should come to me or mine察then I should not only falsify my profession察 but should count also that my concernments were not so sure察if left at God's feet察whilst I stood to and for His name察as they would be if they were under my own care察though with the denial of the way of God。 This was a smarting consideration察and as spurs unto my flesh。 That scripture also greatly helped it to fasten the more upon me察where Christ prays against Judas察that God would disappoint him in his selfish thoughts察which moved him to sell his Master。 Pray read it soberly此 Psalm cix。 6´8察etc。
。 I had also another consideration察and that was察the dread of the torments of hell察which I was sure they must partake of that for fear of the cross察do shrink from their profession of Christ察 His words and laws before the sons of men此 I thought also of the glory that He had prepared for those that in faith察and love察and patience察stood to His ways before them。 These things察I say察have helped me察when the thoughts of the misery that both myself and mine察might for the sake of my profession be exposed to察hath lain pinching on my mind。
。 When I have indeed conceited that I might be banished for my profession察then I have thought of that scripture此 THEY WERE STONED察THEY WERE SAWN ASUNDER察WERE TEMPTED察WERE SLAIN WITH THE SWORD察THEY WANDERED ABOUT IN SHEEP´SKINS察AND GOAT´SKINS察BEING DESTITUTE察AFFLICTED察TORMENTED察OF WHOM THE WORLD WAS NOT WORTHY察 for all they thought they were too bad to dwell and abide amongst them。 I have also thought of that saying察THE HOLY GHOST WITNESSETH IN EVERY CITY察THAT BONDS AND AFFLICTIONS ABIDE ME。 I have verily thought that MY soul and IT have sometimes reasoned about the sore and sad estate of a banished and exiled condition察 how they were exposed to hunger察to cold察to perils察to nakedness察 to enemies察and a thousand calamities察and at last察it may be察to die in a ditch察like a poor and desolate sheep。 But I thank God察 hitherto I have not been moved by these most DELICATE reasonings察 but have rather察by them察more approved my heart to God。
。 I will tell you a pretty business此 I was once above all the rest察in a very sad and low condition for many weeks察at which time also察I being but a young prisoner察and not acquainted with the laws察had this lying much upon my spirits察THAT MY IMPRISONMENT MIGHT END AT THE GALLOWS FOR OUGHT THAT I COULD TELL。 Now therefore Satan laid hard at me察to beat me out of heart察by suggesting thus unto me此 BUT HOW IF察WHEN YOU COME INDEED TO DIE察 YOU SHOULD BE IN THIS CONDITION察THAT IS察AS NOT TO SAVOUR THE THINGS OF GOD察NOR TO HAVE ANY EVIDENCE UPON YOUR SOUL FOR A BETTER STATE HEREAFTER拭。for indeed at that time all the things of God were hid from my soul。
。 Wherefore察when I at first began to think of this察it was a great trouble to me察for I thought with myself察that in the condition I now was in察I was not fit to die察neither indeed did I think I could察if I should be called to it察besides察I thought with myself察if I should make a scrambling shift to clamber up the ladder察yet I should either with quaking察or other symptoms of fainting察give occasion to the enemy to reproach the way of God and His people for their timorousness。 This察therefore察lay with great trouble upon me察for methought I was ashamed to die with a pale face察and tottering knees察in such a cause as this。
。 Wherefore I prayed to God that He would comfort me察and give me strength to do and suffer me what He should call me to察yet no comfort appeared察but all continued hid此 I was also at this time察 so really possessed with the thought of death察that oft I was as if I was on a ladder with the rope about my neck察only this was some encouragement to me察I thought I might now have an opportunity to speak my last words to a multitude察which I thought would come to see me die察and察thought I察if it must be so察if God will but convert one soul by my very last words察I shall not count my life thrown away察nor lost。
。 But yet all the things of God were kept out of my sight察and still the tempter followed me with察BUT WHITHER MUST YOU GO WHEN YOU DIE拭WHAT WILL BECOME OF YOU拭WHERE WILL YOU BE FOUND IN ANOTHER WORLD拭WHAT EVIDENCE HAVE YOU FOR HEAVEN AND GLORY察AND AN INHERITANCE AMONG THEM THAT ARE SANCTIFIED拭 Thus was I tossed for many weeks察and knew not what to do察at last this consideration fell with weight upon me察THAT IT WAS FOR THE WORD AND WAY OF GOD THAT I WAS IN THIS CONDITION察WHEREFORE I WAS ENGAGED NOT TO FLINCH AN HAIR'S BREADTH FROM IT。
。 I thought also察that God might choose whether He would give me comfort now察or at the hour of death察but I might not therefore choose whether I would hold my profession or no此 I was bound察but He was free察yea察'twas my duty to stand to His word察whether He would ever look upon me or save me at the last此 wherefore察thought I察save the point being thus察I am for going on察and venturing
