vessels察treasures察and people are devoured察and yet notwithstanding
he beginneth again like a storm to threaten shipwrack to us all察we
shall find that these abilities rise not from the trades of sacks and
Seville oranges察nor from aught else that either Spain察Portugal察or
any of his other provinces produce察it is his Indian gold that
endangereth and disturbeth all the nations of Europe察it purchaseth
intelligence察creepeth into counsels察and setteth bound loyalty at
liberty in the greatest monarchies of Europe。 If the Spanish king can
keep us from foreign enterprises察and from the impeachment of his
trades察either by offer of invasion察or by besieging us in Britain
Ireland察or elsewhere察he hath then brought the work of our peril in
great forwardness。

Those princes that abound in treasure have great advantages over the
rest察if they once constrain them to a defensive war察where they are
driven once a year or oftener to cast lots for their own garments察and
from all such shall all trades and intercourse be taken away察to the
general loss and impoverishment of the kingdom and commonweal so
reduced。 Besides察when our men are constrained to fight察it hath not
the like hope as when they are pressed and encouraged by the desire of
spoil and riches。 Farther察it is to be doubted how those that in time
of victory seem to affect their neighbour nations will remain after
the first view of misfortunes or ill success察to trust察also察to the
doubtfulness of a battle is but a fearful and uncertain adventure
seeing therein fortune is as likely to prevail as virtue。 It shall not
be necessary to allege all that might be said察and therefore I will
thus conclude察that whatsoever kingdom shall be enforced to defend
itself may be compared to a body dangerously diseased察which for a
season may be preserved with vulgar medicines察but in a short time
and by little and little察the same must needs fall to the ground and
be dissolved。 I have therefore laboured all my life察both according to
my small power and persuasion察to advance all those attempts that
might either promise return of profit to ourselves察or at least be a
let and impeachment to the quiet course and plentiful trades of the
Spanish nation察who察in my weak judgement察by such a war were as
easily endangered and brought from his powerfulness as any prince in
Europe察if it be considered from how many kingdoms and nations his
revenues are gathered察and those so weak in their own beings and so
far severed from mutual succour。 But because such a preparation and
resolution is not to be hoped for in haste察and that the time which
our enemies embrace cannot be had again to advantage察I will hope that
these provinces察and that empire now by me discovered察shall suffice
to enable her Majesty and the whole kingdom with no less quantities of
treasure than the king of Spain hath in all the Indies察East and West
which he possesseth察which if the same be considered and followed察ere
the Spaniards enforce the same察and if her Majesty will undertake it
I will be contented to lose her Highness' favour and good opinion for
ever察and my life withal察if the same be not found rather to exceed
than to equal whatsoever is in this discourse promised and declared。 I
will now refer the reader to the following discourse察with the hope
that the perilous and chargeable labours and endeavours of such as
thereby seek the profit and honour of her Majesty察and the English
nation察shall by men of quality and virtue receive such construction
and good acceptance as themselves would like to be rewarded withal in
the like。

THE DISCOVERY*АOF GUIANAВ

*АExploration

ВАThe name is derived from the Guayano Indians察on the Orinoco。

On Thursday察the sixth of February察in the year 1595察we departed
England察and the Sunday following had sight of the north cape of
Spain察the wind for the most part continuing prosperous察we passed in
sight of the Burlings察and the Rock察and so onwards for the Canaries
and fell with Fuerteventura the 17。 of the same month察where we spent
two or three days察and relieved our companies with some fresh meat。
From thence we coasted by the Grand Canaria察and so to Teneriffe察and
stayed there for the Lion's Whelp察your Lordship's ship察and for
Captain Amyas Preston and the rest。 But when after seven or eight days
we found them not察we departed and directed our course for Trinidad
with mine own ship察and a small barque of Captain Cross's only察for we
had before lost sight of a small galego on the coast of Spain察which
came with us from Plymouth。 We arrived at Trinidad the 22。 of March
casting anchor at Point Curiapan察which the Spaniards call Punta de
Gallo察which is situate in eight degrees or thereabouts。 We abode
there four or five days察and in all that time we came not to the
speech of any Indian or Spaniard。 On the coast we saw a fire察as we
sailed from the Point Carao towards Curiapan察but for fear of the
Spaniards none durst come to speak with us。 I myself coasted it in my
barge close aboard the shore and landed in every cove察the better to
know the island察while the ships kept the channel。 From Curiapan after
a few days we turned up north´east to recover that place which the
Spaniards call Puerto de los Espanoles now Port of Spain察and the
inhabitants Conquerabia察and as before察revictualling my barge察I left
the ships and kept by the shore察the better to come to speech with
some of the inhabitants察and also to understand the rivers察watering´
places察and ports of the island察which察as it is rudely done察my
purpose is to send your Lordship after a few days。 From Curiapan I
came to a port and seat of Indians called Parico察where we found a
fresh water river察but saw no people。 From thence I rowed to another
port察called by the naturals Piche察and by the Spaniards Tierra de
Brea。 In the way between both were divers little brooks of fresh
water察and one salt river that had store of oysters upon the branches
of the trees察and were very salt and well tasted。 All their oysters
grow upon those boughs and sprays察and not on the ground察the like is
commonly seen in other places of the West Indies察and elsewhere。 This
tree is described by Andrew Thevet察in his France Antarctique察and the
form figured in the book as a plant very strange察and by Pliny in his
twelfth book of his Natural History。 But in this island察as also in
Guiana察there are very many of them。

At this point察called Tierra de Brea or Piche察there is that abundance
of stone pitch that all the ships of the world may be therewith laden
from thence察and we made trial of it in trimming our ships to be most
excellent good察and melteth not with the sun as the pitch of Norway
and therefore for ships trading the south parts very profitable。 From
thence we went to the mountain foot called Annaperima察and so passing
the river Carone察on which the Spanish city was seated察we met with
our ships at Puerto de los Espanoles or Conquerabia。

This island of Trinidad hath the form of a sheephook察and is but
narrow察the north part is very mountainous察the soil is very
excellent察and will bear sugar察ginger察or any other commodity that
the Indies yield。 It hath store of deer察wild porks察fruit察fish察and
fowl察it hath also for bread sufficient maize察cassavi察and of those
roots and fruits which are common everywhere in the West Indies。 It
hath divers beasts which the Indies have not察the Spaniards confessed
that they found grains of gold in some of the rivers察but they having
a purpose to enter Guiana察the magazine of all rich metals察cared not
to spend time in the search thereof any further。 This island is called
by the people thereof Cairi察and in it are divers nations。 Those about
Parico are called Jajo察those at Punta de Carao are of the Arwacas
Arawaks and between Carao and Curiapan they are called Salvajos。
Between Carao and Punta de Galera are the Nepojos察and those about the
Spanish city term themselves Carinepagotes Carib´people。 Of the rest
of the nations察and of other ports and rivers察I leave to speak here
being impertinent to my purpose察and mean to describe them as they are
situate in the particular plot and description of the island察three
parts whereof I coasted with my barge察that I might the better
describe it。

Meeting with the ships at Puerto de los Espanoles察we found at the
landing´place a company of Spaniards who kept a guard at the descent
and they offering a sign of peace察I sent Captain Whiddon to speak
with them察whom afterwards to my great grief I left buried in the said
island after my return from Guiana察being a man most honest and
valiant。 The Spaniards seemed to be desirous to trade with us察and to
enter into terms of peace察more for doubt of their own strength than
for aught else察and in the end察upon pledge察some of them came aboard。
The same evening there stale also aboard us in a small canoa two
Indians察the one of them being a cacique or lord of the people察called
Cantyman察who had the year before been with Captain Whiddon察and was
of his acquaintance。 By this Cantyman we understood what strength the
Spaniards had察how far it was to their city察and of Don Antonio de
Berreo察the governor察who was said to be slain in his second attempt
of Guiana察but was not。

While we remained at Puerto de los Espanoles some Spaniards came
aboard us to buy linen of the company察and such other things as they
wanted察and also to view our ships and company察all which I
entertained kindly and feasted after our manner。 By means whereof I
learned of one and another as much of the estate of Guiana as I could
or as they knew察for those poor soldiers having been many years
without wine察a few draughts made them merry察in which mood they
vaunted of Guiana and the riches thereof察and all what they knew of
the ways and passages察myself seeming to purpose nothing less than the
entrance or discovery thereof察but bred in them an opinion that I was
bound only for the relief of those English which I had planted in
Virginia察whereof the bruit was come among them察which I had performed
in my return察if extremity of weather had not forced me from the said
coast。

I found occasions of staying
