s。 But here a worse fate accompanied these than what they had found within the city察and they met with a quicker despatch from the too great abundance they had among the Romans察than they could have done from the famine among the Jews察for when they came first to the Romans察they were puffed up by the famine察and swelled like men in a dropsy察after which they all on the sudden overfilled those bodies that were before empty察and so burst asunder察excepting such only as were skillful enough to restrain their appetites察and by degrees took in their food into bodies unaccustomed thereto。 Yet did another plague seize upon those that were thus preserved察for there was found among the Syrian deserters a certain person who was caught gathering pieces of gold out of the excrements of the Jews' bellies察for the deserters used to swallow such pieces of gold察as we told you before察when they came out察and for these did the seditious search them all察for there was a great quantity of gold in the city察insomuch that as much was now sold in the Roman campАfor twelve Attic dramsВ察as was sold before for twenty´five。 But when this contrivance was discovered in one instance察the fame of it filled their several camps察that the deserters came to them full of gold。 So the multitude of the Arabians察with the Syrians察cut up those that came as supplicants察and searched their bellies。 Nor does it seem to me that any misery befell the Jews that was more terrible than this察since in one night's time about two thousand of these deserters were thus dissected。 5。 When Titus came to the knowledge of this wicked practice察he had like to have surrounded those that had been guilty of it with his horse察and have shot them dead察and he had done it察had not their number been so very great察and those that were liable to this punishment would have been manifold more than those whom they had slain。 However察he called together the commanders of the auxiliary troops he had with him察as well as the commanders of the Roman legions察。for some of his own soldiers had been also guilty herein察as he had been informed撮 and had great indignation against both sorts of them察and said to them察 What have any of my own soldiers done such things as this out of the uncertain hope of gain察without regarding their own weapons察which are made of silver and gold拭Moreover察do the Arabians and Syrians now first of all begin to govern themselves as they please察and to indulge their appetites in a foreign war察and then察out of their barbarity in murdering men察and out of their hatred to the Jews察get it ascribed to the Romans拭─for this infamous practice was said to be spread among some of his own soldiers also。 Titus then threatened that he would put such men to death察if any of them were discovered to be so insolent as to do so again察moreover察he gave it in charge to the legions察that they should make a search after such as were suspected察and should bring them to him。 But it appeared that the love of money was too hard for all their dread of punishment察and a vehement desire of gain is natural to men察and no passion is so venturesome as covetousness察otherwise such passions have certain bounds察and are subordinate to fear。 But in reality it was God who condemned the whole nation察and turned every course that was taken for their preservation to their destruction。 This察therefore察which was forbidden by Caesar under such a threatening察was ventured upon privately against the deserters察and these barbarians would go out still察and meet those that ran away before any saw them察and looking about them to see that no Roman spied them察they dissected them察and pulled this polluted money out of their bowels察which money was still found in a few of them察while yet a great many were destroyed by the bare hope there was of thus getting by them察which miserable treatment made many that were deserting to return back again into the city。 6。 But as for John察when he could no longer plunder the people察he betook himself to sacrilege察and melted down many of the sacred utensils察which had been given to the temple察as also many of those vessels which were necessary for such as ministered about holy things察the caldrons察the dishes察and the tables察nay察he did not abstain from those pouring vessels that were sent them by Augustus and his wife察for the Roman emperors did ever both honor and adorn this temple察whereas this man察who was a Jew察seized upon what were the donations of foreigners察and said to those that were with him察that it was proper for them to use Divine things察while they were fighting for the Divinity察without fear察and that such whose warfare is for the temple should live of the temple察on which account he emptied the vessels of that sacred wine and oil察which the priests kept to be poured on the burnt´offerings察and which lay in the inner court of the temple察and distributed it among the multitude察who察in their anointing themselves and drinking察used each of themАabove an hin of them。 And here I cannot but speak my mind察and what the concern I am under dictates to me察and it is this此I suppose察that had the Romans made any longer delay in coming against these villains察that the city would either have been swallowed up by the ground opening upon them察or been overflowed by water察or else been destroyed by such thunder as the country of Sodom 20 perished by察for it had brought forth a generation of men much more atheistical than were those that suffered such punishments察for by their madness it was that all the people came to be destroyed。 7。 And察indeed察why do I relate these particular calamities拭while Manneus察the son of Lazarus察came running to Titus at this very time察and told him that there had been carried out through that one gate察which was intrusted to his care察no fewer than a hundred and fifteen thousand eight hundred and eighty dead bodies察in the interval between the fourteenth day of the month Xanthieus察。Nisan撮Аwhen the Romans pitched their camp by the city察and the first day of the month Panemus TamuzА This was itself a prodigious multitude察and though this man was not himself set as a governor at that gate察yet was he appointed to pay the public stipend for carrying these bodies out察and so was obliged of necessity to number them察while the rest were buried by their relations察though all their burial was but this察to bring them away察and cast them out of the city。 After this man there ran away to Titus many of the eminent citizens察and told him the entire number of the poor that were dead察and that no fewer than six hundred thousand were thrown out at the gates察though still the number of the rest could not be discovered察and they told him further察that when they were no longer able to carry out the dead bodies of the poor察they laid their corpses on heaps in very large houses察and shut them up therein察as also that a medimnus of wheat was sold for a talent察and that when察a while afterward察it was not possible to gather herbs察by reason the city was all walled about察some persons were driven to that terrible distress as to search the common sewers and old dunghills of cattle察and to eat the dung which they got there察and what they of old could not endure so much as to see they now used for food。 When the Romans barely heard all this察they commiserated their case察while the seditious察who saw it also察did not repent察but suffered the same distress to come upon themselves察for they were blinded by that fate which was already coming upon the city察and upon themselves also。
WAR BOOK 5 FOOTNOTES
1 This appears to be the first time that the zealots ventured to pollute this most sacred court of the temple察which was the court of the priests察wherein the temple itself and the altar stood。 So that the conjecture of those that would interpret that Zacharias察who was slain ;between the temple and the altar; several months before察B。 IV。 ch。 5。 sect。 4察as if he were slain there by these zealots察is groundless察as I have noted on that place already。

3 This is an excellent reflection of Josephus察including his hopes of the restoration of the Jews upon their repentance察See Antiq。 B。 IV。 ch。 8。 sect。 46察which is the grand ;Hope of Israel察─as Manasseh´ben´Israel察the famous Jewish Rabbi察styles it察in his small but remarkable treatise on that subject察of which the Jewish prophets are every where full。 See the principal of those prophecies collected together at the end of the Essay on the Revelation察p。 822察etc。
4 This destruction of such a vast quantity of corn and other provisions察as was sufficient for many years。 was the direct occasion of that terrible famine察which consumed incredible numbers of Jews in Jerusalem during its siege。 Nor probably could the Romans have taken this city察after all察had not these seditious Jews been so infatuated as thus madly to destroy察what Josephus here justly styles察 The nerves of their power。;
5 This timber察we see察was designed for the rebuilding those twenty additional cubits of the holy house above the hundred察which had fallen down some years before。 See the note on Antiq。 B。 XV。 ch。 11。 sect。 3。
6 There being no gate on the west察and only on the west察side of the court of the priests察and so no steps there察this was the only side that the seditious察under this John of Gischala察could bring their engines close to the cloisters of that court end´ways察though upon the floor of the court of Israel。 See the scheme of that temple察in the description of the temples hereto belonging。
7 We may here note察that Titus is here called ;a king察─and ;Caesar察─by Josephus察even while he was no more than the emperor's son察and general of the Roman army察and his father Vespasian was still alive察just as the New Testament says ;Archelaus reigned察─or ;was king察─Matthew 222察though he was properly no more than ethnarch察as Josephus assures us察Antiq。 B。 XVII。 ch。 11。 sect。 4察Of the War察B。 II。 ch。 6。 sect。 3。 Thus also the Jews called the Roman emperors ;kings察─though they never took that title to themselves此─We have no king but Caesar察─John 1915。 ;Submit to the king as supreme察─1 Peter 213察17察which is also the language of the Apostolical Constitutions察II。 II察31察IV。 13察V。 19
