5。 And now did many of the priests察even when they saw their enemies assailing them with swords in their hands察without any disturbance察go on with their Divine worship察and were slain while they were offering their drink´offerings察and burning their incense察as preferring the duties about their worship to God before their own preservation。 The greatest part of them were slain by their own countrymen察of the adverse faction察and an innumerable multitude threw themselves down precipices察nay察some there were who were so distracted among the insuperable difficulties they were under察that they set fire to the buildings that were near to the wall察and were burnt together with them。 Now of the Jews were slain twelve thousand察but of the Romans very few were slain察but a greater number was wounded。
6。 But there was nothing that affected the nation so much察in the calamities they were then under察as that their holy place察which had been hitherto seen by none察should be laid open to strangers察for Pompey察and those that were about him察went into the temple itself 8 whither it was not lawful for any to enter but the high priest察and saw what was reposited therein察the candlestick with its lamps察and the table察and the pouring vessels察and the censers察all made entirely of gold察as also a great quantity of spices heaped together察with two thousand talents of sacred money。 Yet did not he touch that money察nor any thing else that was there reposited察but he commanded the ministers about the temple察the very next day after he had taken it察to cleanse it察and to perform their accustomed sacrifices。 Moreover察he made Hyrcanus high priest察as one that not only in other respects had showed great alacrity察on his side察during the siege察but as he had been the means of hindering the multitude that was in the country from fighting for Aristobulus察which they were otherwise very ready to have done察by which means he acted the part of a good general察and reconciled the people to him more by benevolence than by terror。 Now察among the Captives察Aristobulus's father´in´law was taken察who was also his uncle此so those that were the most guilty he punished with decollatlon察but rewarded Faustus察and those with him that had fought so bravely察with glorious presents察and laid a tribute upon the country察and upon Jerusalem itself。
7。 He also took away from the nation all those cities that they had formerly taken察and that belonged to Celesyria察and made them subject to him that was at that time appointed to be the Roman president there察and reduced Judea within its proper bounds。 He also rebuilt Gadara察。9 that had been demolished by the Jews察in order to gratify one Demetrius察who was of Gadara察and was one of his own freed´men。 He also made other cities free from their dominion察that lay in the midst of the country察such察I mean察as they had not demolished before that time察Hippos察and Scythopolis察as also Pella察and Samaria察and Marissa察and besides these Ashdod察and Jamnia察and Arethusa察and in like manner dealt he with the maritime cities察Gaza察and Joppa察and Dora察and that which was anciently called Strato's Tower察but was afterward rebuilt with the most magnificent edifices察and had its name changed to Cesarea察by king Herod。 All which he restored to their own citizens察and put them under the province of Syria察which province察together with Judea察and the countries as far as Egypt and Euphrates察he committed to Scaurus as their governor察and gave him two legions to support him察while he made all the haste he could himself to go through Cilicia察in his way to Rome察having Aristobulus and his children along with him as his captives。 They were two daughters and two sons察the one of which sons察Alexander察ran away as he was going察but the younger察Antigonus察with his sisters察were carried to Rome。
CHAPTER 8。
Alexander察The Son Of Aristobulus察Who Ran Away From Pompey察Makes An Expedition Against Hyrcanus察But Being Overcome By Gabinius He Delivers Up The Fortresses To Him。 After This Aristobulus Escapes From Rome And Gathers An Army Together察But Being Beaten By The Romans察He Is Brought Back To Rome察With Other Things Relating To Gabinius察Crassus And Cassius。
1。 In the mean time察Scaurus made an expedition into Arabia察but was stopped by the difficulty of the places about Petra。 However察he laid waste the country about Pella察though even there he was under great hardship察for his army was afflicted with famine。 In order to supply which want察Hyrcanus afforded him some assistance察and sent him provisions by the means of Antipater察whom also Scaurus sent to Aretas察as one well acquainted with him察to induce him to pay him money to buy his peace。 The king of Arabia complied with the proposal察and gave him three hundred talents察upon which Scaurus drew his army out of Arabia 10 2。 But as for Alexander察that son of Aristobulus who ran away from Pompey察in some time he got a considerable band of men together察and lay heavy upon Hyrcanus察and overran Judea察and was likely to overturn him quickly察and indeed he had come to Jerusalem察and had ventured to rebuild its wall that was thrown down by Pompey察had not Gabinius察who was sent as successor to Scaurus into Syria察showed his bravery察as in many other points察so in making an expedition against Alexander察who察as he was afraid that he would attack him察so he got together a large army察composed of ten thousand armed footmen察and fifteen hundred horsemen。 He also built walls about proper places察Alexandrium察and Hyrcanium察and Machorus察that lay upon the mountains of Arabia。
3。 However察Gabinius sent before him Marcus Antonius察and followed himself with his whole army察but for the select body of soldiers that were about Antipater察and another body of Jews under the command of Malichus and Pitholaus察these joined themselves to those captains that were about Marcus Antonius察and met Alexander察to which body came Oabinius with his main army soon afterward察and as Alexander was not able to sustain the charge of the enemies' forces察now they were joined察he retired。 But when he was come near to Jerusalem察he was forced to fight察and lost six thousand men in the battle察three thousand of which fell down dead察and three thousand were taken alive察so he fled with the remainder to Alexandrium。
4。 Now when Gabinius was come to Alexandrium察because he found a great many there en´camped察he tried察by promising them pardon for their former offenses察to induce them to come over to him before it came to a fight察but when they would hearken to no terms of accommodation察he slew a great number of them察and shut up a great number of them in the citadel。 Now Marcus Antonius察their leader察signalized himself in this battle察who察as he always showed great courage察so did he never show it so much as now察but Gabinius察leaving forces to take the citadel察went away himself察and settled the cities that had not been demolished察and rebuilt those that had been destroyed。 Accordingly察upon his injunctions察the following cities were restored此Scythopolis察and Samaria察and Anthedon察and Apollonia察and Jamnia察and Raphia察and Mariassa察and Adoreus察and Gamala察and Ashdod察and many others察while a great number of men readily ran to each of them察and became their inhabitants。
5。 When Gabinius had taken care of these cities察he returned to Alexandrium察and pressed on the siege。 So when Alexander despaired of ever obtaining the government察he sent ambassadors to him察and prayed him to forgive what he had offended him in察and gave up to him the remaining fortresses察Hyrcanium and Macherus察as he put Alexandrium into his hands afterwards察all which Gabinius demolished察at the persuasion of Alexander's mother察that they might not be receptacles of men in a second war。 She was now there in order to mollify Gabinius察out of her concern for her relations that were captives at Rome察which were her husband and her other children。 After this Gabinius brought Hyrcanus to Jerusalem察and committed the care of the temple to him察but ordained the other political government to be by an aristocracy。 He also parted the whole nation into five conventions察assigning one portion to Jerusalem察another to Gadara察that another should belong to Amathus察a fourth to Jericho察and to the fifth division was allotted Sepphoris察a city of Galilee。 So the people were glad to be thus freed from monarchical government察and were governed for the future by all aristocracy。
6。 Yet did Aristobulus afford another foundation for new disturbances。 He fled away from Rome察and got together again many of the Jews that were desirous of a change察such as had borne an affection to him of old察and when he had taken Alexandrium in the first place察he attempted to build a wall about it察but as soon as Gabinius had sent an army against him under Siscuria察and Antonius察and Servilius察he was aware of it察and retreated to Macherus。 And as for the unprofitable multitude察he dismissed them察and only marched on with those that were armed察being to the number of eight thousand察among whom was Pitholaus察who had been the lieutenant at Jerusalem察but deserted to Aristobulus with a thousand of his men察so the Romans followed him察and when it came to a battle察Aristobulus's party for a long time fought courageously察but at length they were overborne by the Romans察and of them five thousand fell down dead察and about two thousand fled to a certain little hill察but the thousand that remained with Aristobulus brake through the Roman army察and marched together to Macherus察and when the king had lodged the first night upon its ruins察he was in hopes of raising another army察if the war would but cease a while察accordingly察he fortified that strong hold察though it was done after a poor manner。 But the Romans falling upon him察he resisted察even beyond his abilities察for two days察and then was taken察and brought a prisoner to Gabinius察with Antigonus his son察who had fled away together with him from Rome察and from Gabinius he was carried to Rome again。 Wherefore the senate put him under confinement察but returned his children back to Judea察because Gabinius informed them by letters that he had promised Aristobulus's mother to do so察for her delivering the fortresses up to him。
7。 But now as G
