as upon his march into the enemy's country察the auxiliaries that were sent by the kings marched first察having all the other auxiliaries with them察after whom followed those that were to prepare the roads and measure out the camp察then came the commander's baggage察and after that the other soldiers察who were completely armed to support them察then came Titus himself察having with him another select body察and then came the pikemen察after whom came the horse belonging to that legion。 All these came before the engines察and after these engines came the tribunes and the leaders of the cohorts察with their select bodies察after these came the ensigns察with the eagle察and before those ensigns came the trumpeters belonging to them察next these came the main body of the army in their ranks察every rank being six deep察the servants belonging to every legion came after these察and before these last their baggage察the mercenaries came last察and those that guarded them brought up the rear。 Now Titus察according to the Roman usage察went in the front of the army after a decent manner察and marched through Samaria to Gophna察 a city that had been formerly taken by his father察and was then garrisoned by Roman soldiers察and when he had lodged there one night察he marched on in the morning察and when he had gone as far as a day's march察he pitched his camp at that valley which the Jews察in their own tongue察call ;the Valley of Thorns察─near a certain village called Gabaothsath察which signifies ;the Hill of Saul察─being distant from Jerusalem about thirty furlongs。 6 There it was that he chose out six hundred select horsemen察and went to take a view of the city察to observe what strength it was of察and how courageous the Jews were察whether察when they saw him察and before they came to a direct battle察they would be affrighted and submit察for he had been informed what was really true察that the people who were fallen under the power of the seditious and the robbers were greatly desirous of peace察but being too weak to rise up against the rest察they lay still。 2。 Now察so long as he rode along the straight road which led to the wall of the city察nobody appeared out of the gates察but when he went out of that road察and declined towards the tower Psephinus察and led the band of horsemen obliquely察an immense number of the Jews leaped out suddenly at the towers called the ;Women's Towers察─through that gate which was over against the monuments of queen Helena察and intercepted his horse察 and standing directly opposite to those that still ran along the road察hindered them from joining those that had declined out of it。 They intercepted Titus also察with a few other。 Now it was here impossible for him to go forward察because all the places had trenches dug in them from the wall察to preserve the gardens round about察and were full of gardens obliquely situated察and of many hedges察and to return back to his own men察he saw it was also impossible察by reason of the multitude of the enemies that lay between them察many of whom did not so much as know that the king was in any danger察but supposed him still among them。 So he perceived that his preservation must be wholly owing to his own courage察and turned his horse about察and cried out aloud to those that were about him to follow him察and ran with violence into the midst of his enemies察in order to force his way through them to his own men。 And hence we may principally learn察that both the success of wars察and the dangers that kings 7 are in察are under the providence of God察for while such a number of darts were thrown at Titus察when he had neither his head´piece on察nor his breastplate察。for察as I told you察he went out not to fight察but to view the city撮 none of them touched his body察but went aside without hurting him察as if all of them missed him on purpose察and only made a noise as they passed by him。 So he diverted those perpetually with his sword that came on his side察and overturned many of those that directly met him察and made his horse ride over those that were overthrown。 The enemy indeed made a shout at the boldness of Caesar察and exhorted one another to rush upon him。 Yet did these against whom he marched fly away察and go off from him in great numbers察while those that were in the same danger with him kept up close to him察though they were wounded both on their backs and on their sides察for they had each of them but this one hope of escaping察if they could assist Titus in opening himself a way察that he might not be encompassed round by his enemies before he got away from them。 Now there were two of those that were with him察but at some distance察the one of which the enemy compassed round察and slew him with their darts察 and his horse also察but the other they slew as he leaped down from his horse察and carried off his horse with them。 But Titus escaped with the rest察and came safe to the camp。 So this success of the Jews' first attack raised their minds察and gave them an ill´grounded hope察and this short inclination of fortune察on their side察made them very courageous for the future。 3。 But now察as soon as that legion that had been at Emmaus was joined to Caesar at night察he removed thence察when it was day察and came to a place called Seopus察from whence the city began already to be seen察 and a plain view might be taken of the great temple。 Accordingly察this place察on the north quarter of the city察and joining thereto察was a plain察and very properly named Scopus察。the prospect撮Аand was no more than seven furlongs distant from it。 And here it was that Titus ordered a camp to be fortified for two legions that were to be together察but ordered another camp to be fortified察at three furlongs farther distance behind them察for the fifth legion察for he thought that察by marching in the night察they might be tired察and might deserve to be covered from the enemy察and with less fear might fortify themselves察and as these were now beginning to build察the tenth legion察who came through Jericho察was already come to the place察where a certain party of armed men had formerly lain察to guard that pass into the city察and had been taken before by Vespasian。 These legions had orders to encamp at the distance of six furlongs from Jerusalem察at the mount called the Mount of Olives 8 which lies over against the city on the east side察and is parted from it by a deep valley察interposed between them察which is named Cedron。 4。 Now when hitherto the several parties in the city had been dashing one against another perpetually察this foreign war察now suddenly come upon them after a violent manner察put the first stop to their contentions one against another察and as the seditious now saw with astonishment the Romans pitching three several camps察they began to think of an awkward sort of concord察and said one to another察 What do we here察and what do we mean察when we suffer three fortified walls to be built to coop us in察that we shall not be able to breathe freely拭while the enemy is securely building a kind of city in opposition to us察and while we sit still within our own walls察and become spectators only of what they are doing察with our hands idle察and our armor laid by察as if they were about somewhat that was for our good and advantage。 We are察it seems察。so did they cry out撮 only courageous against ourselves察while the Romans are likely to gain the city without bloodshed by our sedition。; Thus did they encourage one another when they were gotten together察and took their armor immediately察and ran out upon the tenth legion察and fell upon the Romans with great eagerness察and with a prodigious shout察as they were fortifying their camp。 These Romans were caught in different parties察and this in order to perform their several works察and on that account had in great measure laid aside their arms察for they thought the Jews would not have ventured to make a sally upon them察and had they been disposed so to do察they supposed their sedition would have distracted them。 So they were put into disorder unexpectedly察when some of hem left their works they were about察and immediately marched off察while many ran to their arms察but were smitten and slain before they could turn back upon the enemy。 The Jews became still more and more in number察as encouraged by the good success of those that first made the attack察and while they had such good fortune察they seemed both to themselves and to the enemy to be many more than they really were。 The disorderly way of their fighting at first put the Romans also to a stand察who had been constantly used to fight skillfully in good order察and with keeping their ranks察and obeying the orders that were given them察for which reason the Romans were caught unexpectedly察and were obliged to give way to the assaults that were made upon them。 Now when these Romans were overtaken察and turned back upon the Jews察they put a stop to their career察yet when they did not take care enough of themselves through the vehemency of their pursuit察they were wounded by them察 but as still more and more Jews sallied out of the city察the Romans were at length brought into confusion察and put to fight察and ran away from their camp。 Nay察things looked as though the entire legion would have been in danger察unless Titus had been informed of the case they were in察and had sent them succors immediately。 So he reproached them for their cowardice察and brought those back that were running away察and fell himself upon the Jews on their flank察with those select troops that were with him察and slew a considerable number察and wounded more of them察and put them all to flight察and made them run away hastily down the valley。 Now as these Jews suffered greatly in the declivity of the valley察so when they were gotten over it察they turned about察and stood over against the Romans察having the valley between them察and there fought with them。 Thus did they continue the fight till noon察but when it was already a little after noon察Titus set those that came to the assistance of the Romans with him察and those that belonged to the cohorts察to prevent the Jews from making any more sallies察and then sent the rest of the legion to the upper part of th
