after such an extraordinary manner察to gratify his own private affections察and dedicated these towers to the memory of those three persons who had been the dearest to him察and from whom he named them。 They were his brother察his friend察and his wife。 This wife he had slain察out of his love and jealousyВ察as we have already related察the other two he lost in war察as they were courageously fighting。 Hippicus察so named from his friend察was square察its length and breadth were each twenty´five cubits察and its height thirty察and it had no vacuity in it。 Over this solid building察which was composed of great stones united together察there was a reservoir twenty cubits deep察over which there was a house of two stories察whose height was twenty´five cubits察and divided into several parts察over which were battlements of two cubits察and turrets all round of three cubits high察insomuch that the entire height added together amounted to fourscore cubits。 The second tower察which he named from his brother Phasaelus察had its breadth and its height equal察each of them forty cubits察over which was its solid height of forty cubits察over which a cloister went round about察whose height was ten cubits察and it was covered from enemies by breast´works and bulwarks。 There was also built over that cloister another tower察parted into magnificent rooms察and a place for bathing察so that this tower wanted nothing that might make it appear to be a royal palace。 It was also adorned with battlements and turrets察more than was the foregoing察and the entire altitude was about ninety cubits察the appearance of it resembled the tower of Pharus察which exhibited a fire to such as sailed to Alexandria察but was much larger than it in compass。 This was now converted to a house察wherein Simon exercised his tyrannical authority。 The third tower was Mariamne察for that was his queen's name察it was solid as high as twenty cubits察its breadth and its length were twenty cubits察and were equal to each other察its upper buildings were more magnificent察and had greater variety察than the other towers had察for the king thought it most proper for him to adorn that which was denominated from his wife察better than those denominated from men察as those were built stronger than this that bore his wife's name。 The entire height of this tower was fifty cubits。 4。 Now as these towers were so very tall察they appeared much taller by the place on which they stood察for that very old wall wherein they were was built on a high hill察and was itself a kind of elevation that was still thirty cubits taller察over which were the towers situated察and thereby were made much higher to appearance。 The largeness also of the stones was wonderful察for they were not made of common small stones察nor of such large ones only as men could carry察but they were of white marble察cut out of the rock察each stone was twenty cubits in length察and ten in breadth察and five in depth。 They were so exactly united to one another察that each tower looked like one entire rock of stone察so growing naturally察and afterward cut by the hand of the artificers into their present shape and corners察so little察or not at all察did their joints or connexion appear。 low as these towers were themselves on the north side of the wall察the king had a palace inwardly thereto adjoined察which exceeds all my ability to describe it察for it was so very curious as to want no cost nor skill in its construction察but was entirely walled about to the height of thirty cubits察and was adorned with towers at equal distances察and with large bed´chambers察that would contain beds for a hundred guests a´piece察in which the variety of the stones is not to be expressed察for a large quantity of those that were rare of that kind was collected together。 Their roofs were also wonderful察both for the length of the beams察and the splendor of their ornaments。 The number of the rooms was also very great察and the variety of the figures that were about them was prodigious察their furniture was complete察and the greatest part of the vessels that were put in them was of silver and gold。 There were besides many porticoes察one beyond another察round about察and in each of those porticoes curious pillars察yet were all the courts that were exposed to the air every where green。 There were察 moreover察several groves of trees察and long walks through them察with deep canals察and cisterns察that in several parts were filled with brazen statues察through which the water ran out。 There were withal many dove´courts 11 of tame pigeons about the canals。 But indeed it is not possible to give a complete description of these palaces察and the very remembrance of them is a torment to one察as putting one in mind what vastly rich buildings that fire which was kindled by the robbers hath consumed察for these were not burnt by the Romans察but by these internal plotters察as we have already related察in the beginning of their rebellion。 That fire began at the tower of Antonia察and went on to the palaces察and consumed the upper parts of the three towers themselves。 CHAPTER 5。 A Description Of The Temple。 1。 Now this temple察as I have already said察was built upon a strong hill。 At first the plain at the top was hardly sufficient for the holy house and the altar察for the ground about it was very uneven察and like a precipice察but when king Solomon察who was the person that built the temple察had built a wall to it on its east side察there was then added one cloister founded on a bank cast up for it察and on the other parts the holy house stood naked。 But in future ages the people added new banks察。12 and the hill became a larger plain。 They then broke down the wall on the north side察and took in as much as sufficed afterward for the compass of the entire temple。 And when they had built walls on three sides of the temple round about察from the bottom of the hill察and had performed a work that was greater than could be hoped for察。in which work long ages were spent by them察as well as all their sacred treasures were exhausted察which were still replenished by those tributes which were sent to God from the whole habitable earth撮 they then encompassed their upper courts with cloisters察as well as they afterwardАdid the lowest court of theАtemple。 The lowest part of this was erected to the height of three hundred cubits察and in some places more察yet did not the entire depth of the foundations appear察for they brought earth察and filled up the valleys察as being desirous to make them on a level with the narrow streets of the city察wherein they made use of stones of forty cubits in magnitude察for the great plenty of money they then had察and the liberality of the people察made this attempt of theirs to succeed to an incredible degree察and what could not be so much as hoped for as ever to be accomplished察was察by perseverance and length of time察brought to perfection。 2。 Now for the works that were above these foundations察 these were not unworthy of such foundations察for all the cloisters were double察and the pillars to them belonging were twenty´five cubits in height察and supported the cloisters。 These pillars were of one entire stone each of them察and that stone was white marble察and the roofs were adorned with cedar察curiously graven。 The natural magnificence察and excellent polish察and the harmony of the joints in these cloisters察afforded a prospect that was very remarkable察nor was it on the outside adorned with any work of the painter or engraver。 The cloisters of the outmost courtАwere in breadth thirty cubits察while the entire compass of it was by measure six furlongs察including the tower of Antonia察those entire courts that were exposed to the air were laid with stones of all sorts。 When you go through these firstАcloisters察unto the second court of theАtemple察there was a partition made of stone all round察 whose height was three cubits此its construction was very elegant察upon it stood pillars察at equal distances from one another察declaring the law of purity察some in Greek察and some in Roman letters察that ;no foreigner should go within that sanctuary; for that second court of theАtemple was called ;the Sanctuary察─and was ascended to by fourteen steps from the first court。 This court was four´square察and had a wall about it peculiar to itself察the height of its buildings察although it were on the outside forty cubits察。13 was hidden by the steps察and on the inside that height was but twenty´five cubits察for it being built over against a higher part of the hill with steps察it was no further to be entirely discerned within察being covered by the hill itself。 Beyond these thirteen steps there was the distance of ten cubits察this was all plain察whence there were other steps察each of five cubits a´piece察that led to the gates察which gates on the north and south sides were eight察on each of those sides four察and of necessity two on the east。 For since there was a partition built for the women on that side察as the proper place wherein they were to worship察there was a necessity for a second gate for them此this gate was cut out of its wall察over against the first gate。 There was also on the other sides one southern and one northern gate察through which was a passage into the court of the women察for as to the other gates察the women were not allowed to pass through them察nor when they went through their own gate could they go beyond their own wall。 This place was allotted to the women of our own country察and of other countries察 provided they were of the same nation察and that equally。 The western part of this court had no gate at all察but the wall was built entire on that side。 But then the cloisters which were betwixt the gates extended from the wall inward察before the chambers察for they were supported by very fine and large pillars。 These cloisters were single察and察excepting their magnitude察were no way inferior to those of the lower court。 3。 Now nine of these gates were on every side covered over with gold and silver察as were the jambs of their doors and their lintels察but there was one gate that was without the inward court of theАholy house察which was of Corinthian brass察and greatly excelled those that were
