made war upon her land察 that in which察as he said察this Eurytus
bore sway察 and slew the prince her father察and sacked her city。 And
now察as thou seest察he comes sending her to this house not in careless
fashion察lady察nor like slave此no察dream not of that察 it is not
likely察if his heart is kindled with desire。
I resolved察therefore察O Queen察to tell thee all that I had
heard from yonder man。 Many others were listening to it察as I was
in the public place where the Trachinians were assembled察and they can
convict him。 If my words are unwelcome察I am grieved察but nevertheless
I have spoken out the truth。
DEIANEIRA
Ah me unhappy In what plight do I stand拭What secret bane have
received beneath my roof拭Hapless that I am Is she nameless察then察as
her convoy sware
MESSENGER
Nay察illustrious by name as by birth察she is the daughter of
Eurytus察and was once called Iole察she of whose parentage Lichas could
say nothing察because察forsooth察he asked no questions。
LEADER OF THE CHORUS
Accursed察above other evil´doers察be the man whom deeds of
treachery dishonour
DEIANEIRA
Ah察maidens察what am I to do拭These latest tidings have bewildered
me
LEADER
Go and inquire from Lichas察perchance he will tell the truth察if
thou constrain him to answer。
DEIANEIRA
Well察I will go察thy counsel is not amiss。
MESSENGER
And I察shall I wait here拭Or what is thy pleasure
DEIANEIRA
Remain察 here he comes from the house of his own accord察without
summons from me。
Enter LICHAS
LICHAS
Lady察what message shall I bear to Heracles拭Give me thy commands
for察as thou seest察I am going。
DEIANEIRA
How hastily thou art rushing away察when thy visit had been so long
delayed察 before we have had time for further talk。
LICHAS
Nay察if there be aught that thou would'st ask察I am at thy
service。
DEIANEIRA
Wilt thou indeed give me the honest truth
LICHAS
Yes察be great Zeus my witness察 in anything that I know
DEIANEIRA
Who is the woman察then察whom thou hast brought
LICHAS
She is Euboean察but of what birth察I cannot say。
MESSENGER
Sirrah察look at me此 to whom art thou speaking察think'st thou
LICHAS
And thou´ what dost thou mean by such a question
MESSENGER
Deign to answer me察if thou comprehendest。
LICHAS
To the royal Deianeira察unless mine eyes deceive me察 daughter
of Oeneus察wife of Heracles察and my queen。
MESSENGER
The very word that I wished to hear from thee此 thou sayest that
she is thy queen
LICHAS
Yes察as in duty bound。
MESSENGER
Well察then察what art thou prepared to suffer察if found guilty of
failing in that duty
LICHAS
Failing in duty拭What dark saying is this
MESSENGER
'Tis none察the darkest words are thine own。
LICHAS
I will go察I was foolish to hear thee so long。
MESSENGER
No察not till thou hast answered a brief question。
LICHAS
Ask what thou wilt察thou art not taciturn。
MESSENGER
That captive察whom thou hast brought home´ thou knowest whom mean
LICHAS
Yes察but why dost thou ask
MESSENGER
Well察saidst thou not that thy prisoner´ she察on whom thy gaze now
turns so vacantly´ was Iole察daughter of Eurytus
LICHAS
Said it to whom拭Who and where is the man that will be thy witness
to hearing this from me
MESSENGER
To many of our own folk thou saidst it此in the public gathering of
Trachinians察a great crowd heard thus much from thee。
LICHAS
Ay´ said they heard´but 'tis one thing to report a fancy察and
another to make the story good。
MESSENGER
A fancy Didst thou not say on thine oath that thou wast
bringing her us a bride for Heracles
LICHAS
I拭bringing a bride拭 In the name of the gods察dear mistress察tell
me who this stranger may be
MESSENGER
One who heard from thine own lips that the conquest of the whole
city was due to love for this girl此the Lydian woman was not its
destroyer察but the passion which this maid has kindled。
LICHAS
Lady察let this fellow withdraw此to prate with the brainsick befits
not sane man。
DEIANEIRA
Nay察I implore thee by Zeus whose lightnings go forth over the
high glens of Oeta察do not cheat me of the truth For she to whom thou
wilt speak is not ungenerous察nor hath she yet to learn that the human
heart is inconstant to its joys。 They are not wise察then察who stand
forth to buffet against Love察for Love rules the gods as he will
and me察and why not another woman察such as I am拭So I am mad indeed
if I blame my husband察because that distemper hath seized him察or this
woman察his partner in a thing which is no shame to them察and no
wrong to me。 Impossible No察if he taught thee to speak falsely
'tis not a noble lesson that thou art learning察or if thou art thine
own teacher in this察thou wilt be found cruel when it is thy wish to
prove kind。 Nay察tell me the whole truth。 To a free´born man察the name
of liar cleaves as a deadly brand。 If thy hope is to escape detection
that察too察is vain察there are many to whom thou hast spoken察who
will tell me。
And if thou art afraid察thy fear is mistaken。 Not to learn the
truth察that察indeed察would pain me察but to know it´ what is there
terrible in that拭Hath not Heracles wedded others ere now察 ay察more
than living man察 and no one of them hath bad harsh word or taunt from
me察nor shall this girl察though her whole being should be absorbed
in her passion察for indeed I felt a profound pity when I beheld her
because her beauty hath wrecked her life察and she察hapless one察all
innocent察hath brought her fatherland to ruin and to bondage。
Well察those things must go with wind and stream。´ To thee I
say察deceive whom thou wilt察but ever speak the truth to me。
LEADER
Hearken to her good counsel察and hereafter thou shalt have no
cause to complain of this lady察our thanks察too察will be thine。
LICHAS
Nay察then察dear mistress察 since I see that thou thinkest as
mortals should think察and canst allow for weakness察 I will tell
thee the whole truth察and hide it not。 Yes察it is even as yon man
saith。 This girl inspired that overmastering love which long ago smote
through the soul of Heracles察for this girl's sake the desolate
Oechalia察her home察was made the prey of his spear。 And he察 it is
just to him to say so察 never denied this察 never told me to conceal
it。 But I察lady察fearing to wound thy heart by such tidings察have
sinned察if thou count this in any sort a sin。
Now察however察that thou knowest the whole story察for both your
sakes察 for his察and not less for thine own察 bear with the woman察and
be content that the words which thou hast spoken regarding her
should bind thee still。 For he察whose strength is victorious in all
else察hath been utterly vanquished by his passion for this girl。
DEIANEIRA
Indeed察mine own thoughts move me to act thus。 Trust me察I will
not add a new affliction to my burdens by waging a fruitless fight
against the gods。
But let us go into the house察that thou mayest receive my
messages察and察since gifts should be meetly recompensed with gifts察
that thou mayest take these also。 It is not right that thou
shouldest go back with empty hands察after coming with such a goodly
train。
Exit MESSENGER察as LICHAS and DEIANEIRA go into the house。
CHORUS singing
strophe
Great and mighty is the victory which the Cyprian queen ever bears
away。 I stay not now to speak of the gods察I spare to tell how she
beguiled the son of Cronus察and Hades察the lord of darkness察or
Poseidon察shaker of the earth。
But察when this bride was to be won察who were the valiant rivals
that entered the contest for her hand拭Who went forth to the ordeal of
battle察to the fierce blows and the blinding dust
antistrophe
One was a mighty river´god察the dread form of a horned and
four´legged bull察Achelous察from Oeniadae此the other came from
Thebe察dear to Bacchus察with curved bow察and spears察and brandished
club察the son of Zeus此who then met in combat察fain to win a bride
and the Cyprian goddess of nuptial joy was there with them察sole
umpire of their strife。
epode
Then was there clatter of fists and clang of bow察and the noise of
bull's horns therewith察then were there close´locked grapplings察and
deadly blows from the forehead察and loud deep cries from both。
Meanwhile察she察in her delicate beauty察sat on the side of a
hill that could be seen afar察awaiting the husband that should be
hers。
So the battle rages察as I have told察but the fair bride who is the
prize of the strife abides the end in piteous anguish。 And suddenly
she is parted from her mother察as when a heifer is taken from its dam。
DEIANEIRA enters from the house alone察carrying in her arms a
casket containing a robe。
DEIANEIRA
Dear friends察while our visitor is saying his farewell to the
captive girls in the house察I have stolen forth to you察 partly to
tell you what these hands have devised察and partly to crave your
sympathy with my sorrow。
A maiden察 or察methinks察no longer a maiden察but a mistress察 hath
found her way into my house察as a freight comes to a mariner察 a
merchandise to make shipwreck of my peace。 And now we twain are to
share the same marriage´bed察the same embrace。 Such is the reward that
Heracles hath sent me察 he whom I called true and loyal察 for guarding
his home through all that weary time。 I have no thought of anger
against him察often as he is vexed with t
