Two days afterwards察as Mr。 Hayes was working in his shop with his

lady seated beside him察the trampling of a horse was heard in his courtyard察

and a gentleman察of huge stature察descended from it察and strode into the

shop。 His figure was wrapped in a large cloak察but Mr。 Hayes could not

help fancying that he had somewhere seen his face before。

;This察I preshoom察─said the gentleman察 is Misther Hayes察that I have

come so many miles to see察and this is his amiable lady拭I was the most

intimate frind察madam察of your laminted brother察who died in King Lewis's

service察and whose last touching letthers I despatched to you two days ago。

I have with me a further precious token of my dear friend察Captain Hallit

is HERE。;

And so saying察 the military gentleman察 with one arm察 removed his

cloak察and stretching forward the other into Hayes's face almost察stretched

likewise forward a little boy察 grinning and sprawling in the air察 and

prevented only from falling to the ground by the hold which the Ensign

kept of the waistband of his little coat and breeches。

;Isn't he a pretty boy拭─ said Mrs。 Hayes察 sidling up to her husband

tenderly察and pressing one of Mr。 Hayes's hands。

       * * *

About the lad's beauty it is needless to say what the carpenter thought察

but that night察 and for many many nights after察 the lad stayed at Mr。

Hayes's。

      CHAPTER VIII。 ENUMERATES

     THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF

    MASTER THOMAS BILLINGS

          INTRODUCES BROCK AS

              DOCTOR WOODAND

   ANNOUNCES THE EXECUTION

           OF ENSIGN MACSHANE。

We are obliged察 in recording this history察 to follow accurately that

great authority察 the ;Calendarium Newgaticum Roagorumque

Registerium察─of which every lover of literature察in the present day knows

the value察and as that remarkable work totally discards all the unities in its

narratives察and reckons the life of its heroes only by their actions察and not

by periods of time察 we must follow in the wake of this mighty arka

humble cock´boat。 When it pauses察we pause察when it runs ten knots an

hour察we run with the same celerity察and as察in order to carry the reader

from the penultimate chapter of this work unto the last chapter察we were

compelled to make him leap over a gap of seven blank years察 ten years

more must likewise be granted to us before we are at liberty to resume our

history。

During that period察 Master Thomas Billings had been under the

especial care of his mother察and察as may be imagined察he rather increased

than diminished the accomplishments for which he had been remarkable

while under the roof of his foster´father。 And with this advantage察 that

while at the blacksmith's察and only three or four years of age察his virtues

were necessarily appreciated only in his family circle and among those

few acquaintances of his own time of life whom a youth of three can be

expected to meet in the alleys or over the gutters of a small country

hamletin his mothers residence察his circle extended with his own growth察

                                         110

´ Page 111´

                                       Catherine此A Story

and he began to give proofs of those powers of which in infancy there had

been only encouraging indications。 Thus it was nowise remarkable that a

child of four years should not know his letters察 and should have had a

great disinclination to learn them察 but when a young man of fifteen

showed the same creditable ignorance察the same undeviating dislike察it was

easy to see that he possessed much resolution and perseverance。 When it

was remarked察 too察 that察 in case of any difference察 he not only beat the

usher察but by no means disdained to torment and bully the very smallest

boys of the school察 it was easy to see that his mind was comprehensive

and careful察 as well as courageous and grasping。 As it was said of the

Duke of Wellington察in the Peninsula察that he had a thought for everybody´

´from Lord Hill to the smallest drummer in the armyin like manner Tom

Billings bestowed HIS attention on high and low察 but in the shape of

blows此he would fight the strongest and kick the smallest察and was always

at work with one or the other。 At thirteen察when he was removed from the

establishment whither he had been sent察he was the cock of the school out

of doors察and the very last boy in。 He used to let the little boys and new´

comers pass him by察 and laugh察 but he always belaboured them

unmercifully afterwards察and then it was察he said察HIS turn to laugh。 With

such a pugnacious turn察Tom Billings ought to have been made a soldier察

and might have died a marshal察but察by an unlucky ordinance of fate察he

was made a tailor察and died anever mind what for the present察suffice it

to say察that he was suddenly cut off察at a very early period of his existence察

by a disease which has exercised considerable ravages among the British

youth。

By consulting the authority above mentioned察we find that Hayes did

not confine himself to the profession of a carpenter察 or remain long

established in the country察 but was induced察 by the eager spirit of Mrs。

Catherine most probably察 to try his fortune in the metropolis察 where he

lived察 flourished察 and died。 Oxford Road察 Saint Giles's察 and Tottenham

Court were察at various periods of his residence in town察inhabited by him。

At one place he carried on the business of greengrocer and small´coalman察

in another察he was carpenter察undertaker察and lender of money to the poor察

finally察he was a lodging´house keeper in the Oxford or Tyburn Road察but

continued to exercise the last´named charitable profession。

Lending as he did upon pledges察and carrying on a pretty large trade察it

was not for him察of course察to inquire into the pedigree of all the pieces of

plate察 the bales of cloth察 swords察 watches察 wigs察 shoe´buckles察 etc。 that

were confided by his friends to his keeping察but it is clear that his friends

had the requisite confidence in him察and that he enjoyed the esteem of a

class of characters who still live in history察and are admired unto this very

day。 The mind loves to think that察perhaps察in Mr。 Hayes's back parlour the

gallant Turpin might have hob´and´nobbed with Mrs。 Catherine察that here察

perhaps察the noble Sheppard might have cracked his joke察or quaffed his

pint of rum。 Who knows but that Macheath and Paul Clifford may have

crossed legs under Hayes's dinner´table拭 But why pause to speculate on

things that might have been拭why desert reality for fond imagination察or

call up from their honoured graves the sacred dead拭I know not此and yet察

in sooth察I can never pass Cumberland Gate without a sigh察as I think of

the gallant cavaliers who traversed that road in old time。 Pious priests

accompanied their triumphs察 their chariots were surrounded by hosts of

glittering javelin´men。 As the slave at the car of the Roman conqueror

shouted察 Remember thou art mortal ┌察 before the eyes of the British

warrior rode the undertaker and his coffin察telling him that he too must die

Power dwelt察 Milesia's darling son´ ´Albion Street was a desert。 The

square of Connaught was without its penultimate察and察strictly speaking察

NAUGHT。 The Edgware Road was then a road察 'tis true察 with tinkling

waggons passing now and then察 and fragrant walls of snowy hawthorn

blossoms。 The ploughman whistled over Nutford Place察 down the green

solitudes of Sovereign Street the merry milkmaid led the lowing kine。

Here察 then察 in the midst of green fields and sweet airbefore ever

omnibuses were察 and when Pineapple Turnpike and Terrace were alike

unknownhere stood Tyburn此and on the road towards it察perhaps to enjoy

the prospect察stood察in the year 1725察the habitation of Mr。 John Hayes。

One fine morning in the year 1725察Mrs。 Hayes察who had been abroad

the smartness of their appearance and the pleasure depicted in their
