leagues a hundred and fifty miles察sir察upon that horse察between sunrise
and sunset。;
;Gracious powers on which horse拭─ said Doctor Dobbs察 very
solemnly。
;On THIS察 siron mine察 Corporal Brock of Cutts's black gelding察
'William of Nassau。' The Prince察sir察gave it me after Blenheim fight察for I
had my own legs carried away by a cannon´ball察just as I cut down two of
Sauerkrauter's regiment察who had made the Prince prisoner。;
;Your own legs察sir ─said the Doctor。 ;Gracious goodness this is more
and more astonishing ─
;No察no察not my own legs察my horse's I mean察sir察and the Prince gave
me 'William of Nassau' that very day。;
To this no direct reply was made察but the Doctor looked at Mrs。 Dobbs察
and Mrs。 Dobbs and the rest of the children at her eldest son察who grinned
and said察 Isn't it wonderful拭─The Corporal to this answered nothing察but察
resuming his account察pointed to the other horse and said察 THAT horse察
sirgood as mine isthat horse察with the silver stirrups察is his Excellency's
horse察 Captain Count Maximilian Gustavus Adolphus von Galgenstein察
captain of horse and of the Holy Roman Empire; he lifted here his hat
with much gravity察 and all the crowd察 even to the parson察did likewise。
;We call him 'George of Denmark' sir察 in compliment to Her Majesty's
husband此 he is Blenheim too察 sir察 Marshal Tallard rode him on that day察
and you know how HE was taken prisoner by the Count。;
;George of Denmark察 Marshal Tallard察 William of Nassau this is
strange indeed察most wonderful Why察sir察little are you aware that there
are before you察AT THIS MOMENT察 two other living beings who bear
these venerated names My boys察 stand forward Look here察 sir此 these

children have been respectively named after our late sovereign and the
husband of our present Queen。;
;And very good names too察sir察ay察and very noble little fellows too察
and I propose that察with your reverence and your ladyship's leave察William
Nassau here shall ride on George of Denmark察 and George of Denmark
shall ride on William of Nassau。;
When this speech of the Corporal's was made察the whole crowd set up
a loyal hurrah察and察with much gravity察the two little boys were lifted up
into the saddles察and the Corporal leading one察entrusted the other to the
horse´boy察and so together marched stately up and down the green。
The popularity which Mr。 Brock gained by this manoeuvre was very
great察 but with regard to the names of the horses and children察 which
coincided so extraordinarily察it is but fair to state察that the christening of
the quadrupeds had only taken place about two minutes before the
dragoon's appearance on the green。 For if the fact must be confessed察he察
while seated near the inn window察had kept a pretty wistful eye upon all
going on without察 and the horses marching thus to and fro for the
wonderment of the village察were only placards or advertisements for the
riders。
There was察 besides the boy now occupied with the horses察 and the
landlord and landlady of the ;Bugle Inn察─another person connected with
that establishmenta very smart察 handsome察 vain察 giggling servant´girl察
about the age of sixteen察 who went by the familiar name of Cat察 and
attended upon the gentlemen in the parlour察 while the landlady was
employed in cooking their supper in the kitchen。 This young person had
been educated in the village poor´house察and having been pronounced by
Doctor Dobbs and the schoolmaster the idlest察 dirtiest察 and most
passionate little minx with whom either had ever had to do察she was察after
receiving a very small portion of literary instruction indeed it must be
stated that the young lady did not know her letters察bound apprentice at
the age of nine years to Mrs。 Score察 her relative察 and landlady of the
;Bugle Inn。;
If Miss Cat察or Catherine Hall察was a slattern and a minx察Mrs。 Score
was a far superior shrew察and for the seven years of her apprenticeship the

girl was completely at her mistress's mercy。 Yet though wondrously stingy察
jealous察 and violent察 while her maid was idle and extravagant察 and her
husband seemed to abet the girl察Mrs。 Score put up with the wench's airs察
idleness察 and caprices察 without ever wishing to dismiss her from the
;Bugle。; The fact is察that Miss Catherine was a great beauty察and for about
two years察since her fame had begun to spread察the custom of the inn had
also increased vastly。 When there was a debate whether the farmers察 on
their way from market察 would take t'other pot察 Catherine察 by appearing
with it察would straightway cause the liquor to be swallowed and paid for察
and when the traveller who proposed riding that night and sleeping at
Coventry or Birmingham察was asked by Miss Catherine whether he would
like a fire in his bedroom察he generally was induced to occupy it察although
he might before have vowed to Mrs。 Score that he would not for a
thousand guineas be absent from home that night。 The girl had察too察half´a´
dozen lovers in the village察and these were bound in honour to spend their
pence at the alehouse she inhabited。 O woman察lovely woman what strong
resolves canst thou twist round thy little finger what gunpowder passions
canst thou kindle with a single sparkle of thine eye what lies and fribble
nonsense canst thou make us listen to察 as they were gospel truth or
splendid wit above all what bad liquor canst thou make us swallow when
thou puttest a kiss within the cupand we are content to call the poison
wine
The mountain´wine at the ;Bugle; was察in fact察execrable察but Mrs。 Cat察
who served it to the two soldiers察made it so agreeable to them察that they
found it a passable察 even a pleasant task察 to swallow the contents of a
second bottle。 The miracle had been wrought instantaneously on her
appearance此for whereas at that very moment the Count was employed in
cursing the wine察 the landlady察 the wine´grower察 and the English nation
generally察 when the young woman entered and choosing so to interpret
the oaths said察 Coming察 your honour察 I think your honour called;
Gustavus Adolphus whistled察 stared at her very hard察 and seeming quite
dumb´stricken by her appearance察 contented himself by swallowing a
whole glass of mountain by way of reply。
Mr。 Brock was察however察by no means so confounded as his captain此

Catherine此A Story
he was thirty years older than the latter察and in the course of fifty years of
military life had learned to look on the most dangerous enemy察or the most
beautiful woman察 with the like daring察 devil´may´care determination to
conquer。
;My dear Mary察─ then said that gentleman察 his honour is a lord察 as
good as a lord察that is察for all he allows such humble fellows as I am to
drink with him。;
Catherine dropped a low curtsey察and said察 Well察I don't know if you
are joking a poor country girl察 as all you soldier gentlemen do察 but his
honour LOOKS like a lord此though I never see one察to be sure。;
;Then察─said the Captain察gathering courage察 how do you know I look
like one察pretty Mary拭─
;Pretty Catherine此I mean Catherine察if you please察sir。;
Here Mr。 Brock burst into a roar of laughter察and shouting with many
oaths that she was right at first察invited her to give him what he called a
buss。
Pretty Catherine turned away from him at this request察and muttered
something about ;Keep your distance察 low fellow buss indeed察 poor
country girl察─etc。 etc。察placing herself察as if for protection察on the side of
the Captain。 That gentleman looked also very angry察 but whether at the
sight of innocence so outraged察or the insolence of the Corporal for daring
to help himself first察we cannot say。 ;Hark ye察Mr。 Brock察─he cried very
fiercely察 I will suffer no such liberties in my presence此 remember察 it is
only my condescension which permits you to share my bottle in this way察
take care I don't give you instead a taste of my cane。; So saying察he察in a
protecting manner察placed one hand round Mrs。 Catherine's waist察holding
the other clenched very near to the Corporal's nose。
Mrs。 Catherine察for HER share of this action of the Count's察dropped
another curtsey and said察 Thank you察my Lord。; But Galgenstein's threat
did not appear to make any impression on Mr。 Brock察as indeed there was
no reason that it should察for the Corporal察at a combat of fisticuffs察could
have pounded his commander into a jelly in ten minutes察so he contented
himself by saying察 Well察 noble Captain察 there's no harm
