Soothfastness binds souls In pleasant wise to flesh�察�and Passion binds By 

toilsome strain�察�but Ignorance�察�which blots The beams of wisdom�察�binds 

the    soul    to  sloth。   Passion     and    Ignorance�察    �once    overcome�察     �Leave 

Soothfastness�察�O Bharata� �Where this With Ignorance are absent�察�Passion 

rules�察�And Ignorance in hearts not good nor quick。 When at all gateways 

of   the   Body   shines   The   Lamp   of   Knowledge�察  �then   may   one   see   well 

Soothfastness settled in that city reigns�察�Where longing is�察�and ardour�察�and 

unrest�察�Impulse to strive and gain�察�and avarice�察�Those spring from Passion´ 

´Prince��engrained�察�and where Darkness and dulness�察�sloth and stupor are�察�

'Tis Ignorance hath caused them�察�Kuru Chief� �

     Moreover�察  �when   a   soul   departeth�察  �fixed   In   Soothfastness�察 �it   goeth   to 

the place Perfect and pureof those that know all Truth。 If it departeth in 

set   habitude   Of   Impulse�察  �it   shall   pass   into   the   world   Of   spirits   tied   to 

works�察  �and�察  �if   it   dies   In   hardened   Ignorance�察  �that   blinded   soul   Is   born 

anew in some unlighted womb。 

     The fruit of Soothfastness is true and sweet�察�The fruit of lusts is pain

and toil�察�the fruit Of Ignorance is deeper darkness。 Yea� �For Light brings 

light�察�and Passion ache to have�察�And gloom�察�bewilderments�察�and ignorance 

Grow forth from Ignorance。 Those of the first Rise ever higher�察�those of 

the second mode Take a mid place�察�the darkened souls sink back To lower 

deeps�察�loaded with witlessness� �

     When�察�watching life�察�the living man perceives The only actors are the 

Qualities�察�And   knows   what rules beyond the  Qualities�察�Then is he   come 

nigh unto Me� �

     The Soul�察�Thus passing forth from the Three Qualities Whereby arise 

all bodiesovercomes Birth�察�Death�察�Sorrow�察�and Age�察�and drinketh deep 

The undying wine of Amrit。 

     Arjuna。 Oh�察�my Lord� �Which be the signs to know him that hath gone 

Past    the  Three    Modes�拭    �How    liveth   he�拭  �What    way   Leadeth     him   safe 

beyond the threefold Modes�拭�

     Krishna。 He who with equanimity surveys Lustre of goodness�察�strife of 

passion�察�sloth Of ignorance�察�not angry if they are�察�Not wishful when they 

are   not�此  �he   who   sits   A  sojourner   and   stranger   in   their   midst   Unruffled�察�

standing      off�察 �sayingserene      When     troubles    break�察    �These    be   the 

Qualities� ─�He unto whomself´centredgrief and joy Sound as one word�察�

to   whose   deep´seeing   eyes   The   clod�察  �the   marble�察  �and   the   gold   are   one�察�

Whose   equal   heart   holds   the   same   gentleness   For   lovely   and   unlovely 

things�察   �firm´set�察  �Well´pleased      in  praise   and   dispraise�察   �satisfied   With 

honour     or   dishonour�察   �unto   friends   And    unto   foes   alike   in  tolerance�察�

Detached from undertakings��he is named Surmounter of the Qualities� �

     And such With single�察�fervent faith adoring Me�察�Passing beyond the 

Qualities�察�conforms To Brahma�察�and attains Me� �

     For I am That whereof Brahma is the likeness� �Mine The Amrit is�察�and 

Immortality Is mine�察�and mine perfect Felicity� �

                             CHAPTER XV 



     Krishna。   Men   call   the   Aswattha��the   Banyan´tree�察  �Which   hath   its 

boughs beneath�察�its roots above�察�The ever´holy tree。 Yea� �for its leaves 

Are    green    and   waving    hymns     which    whisper    Truth�   �Who     knows    the 

Aswattha�察�knows Veds�察�and all。 

     Its   branches   shoot   to   heaven   and   sink   to   earth�撮�FN#30�А  �Even   as   the 

deeds   of   men�察  �which   take   their   birth   From   qualities�此  �its   silver   sprays 

and blooms�察�And   all   the eager   verdure of   its girth�察�Leap to quick   life   at 

kiss   of   sun   and   air�察 �As   men's   lives   quicken   to   the   temptings   fair Of 

wooing sense�此�its hanging rootlets seek The soil beneath�察�helping to hold it 

there�察�

     As    actions   wrought     amid   this  world    of  men    Bind   them    by   ever´ 

tightening bonds again。          If ye knew well the teaching of the Tree�察�What 

its shape saith�察�and whence it springs�察�and�察�then 

     How it must end�察�and all the ills of it�察�The axe of sharp Detachment ye 

would      whet�察     �And     cleave    the  clinging    snaky    roots�察  �and   lay  This 

Aswattha of sense´life low��to set 

     New growths upspringing to that happier sky�察�Which they who reach 

shall   have   no   day   to   die�察 �Nor   fade   away�察  �nor   fallto   Him�察  �I   mean�察�

FATHER and FIRST�察�Who made the mystery 

     Of old Creation�察�for to Him come they From passion and from dreams 

who break away�察         �Who part the bonds constraining them to flesh�察�And�察�

Him�察�the Highest�察�worshipping alway 

     No longer grow at mercy of what breeze Of summer pleasure stirs the 

sleeping trees�察      �What blast of tempest tears them�察�bough and stem To the 

eternal world pass such as these� �

     Another Sun gleams there� �another Moon� �Another Light��not Dusk�察�

nor Dawn�察 �nor Noon            Which   they who   once behold return   no   more�察�

They have attained My rest�察�life's Utmost boon� �

     When�察  �in   this   world   of   manifested   life�察  �The   undying   Spirit�察  �setting 

forth    from    Me�察  �Taketh     on  form�察   �it  draweth    to   itself  From    Being's 

storehouse��which   containeth   all�察  �Senses   and   intellect。   The   Sovereign 

Soul Thus entering the flesh�察�or quitting it�察�Gathers these up�察�as the wind

gathers scents�察�Blowing above the flower´beds。 Ear and Eye�察�And Touch 

and Taste�察�and Smelling�察�these it takes�察�Yea�察�and a sentient mind��linking 

itself To sense´things so。 

     The unenlightened ones Mark not that Spirit when he goes or comes�察�

Nor when he takes his pleasure in the form�察�Conjoined with qualities�察�but 

those   see   plain   Who   have   the   eyes   to   see。   Holy   souls   see   Which   strive 

thereto。 Enlightened�察�they perceive That Spirit in themselves�察�but foolish 

ones�察�Even though they  strive�察�discern not�察 �having hearts Unkindled�察 �ill´ 

informed� �

     Know�察  �too�察  �from   Me   Shineth   the   gathered   glory   of   the   suns   Which 

lighten   all   the   world�此  �from  Me   the   moons   Draw   silvery  beams�察  �and   fire 

fierce loveliness。 I penetrate the clay�察�and lend all shapes Their living force�察�

I   glide   into   the   plant   Root�察  �leaf�察  �and   bloomto   make   the   woodlands 

green     With    springing    sap。   Becoming      vital  warmth�察    �I  glow    in  glad�察�

respiring frames�察�and pass�察�With outward and with inward breath�察�to feed 

The body by all meats。��FN#31�А�

     For in this world Being is twofold�此�the Divided�察�one�察�The Undivided�察�

one。 All   things   that   live Are   ;the   Divided。;   That   which   sits   apart�察   �The 

Undivided。; 

     Higher   still   is   He�察 �The   Highest�察  �holding   all�察  �whose   Name   is   LORD�察�

The Eternal�察�Sovereign�察�First� �Who fills all worlds�察�Sustaining them。 And 

dwelling thus beyond Divided Being and UndividedI Am called of men 

and Vedas�察�Life Supreme�察�The PURUSHOTTAMA。 

     Who knows Me thus�察�With mind unclouded�察�knoweth all�察�dear Prince� �

And with his whole soul ever worshippeth Me。 

       Now      is  the   sacred�察   �secret    Mystery     Declared      to   thee�   �Who 

comprehendeth this Hath wisdom� �He is quit of works in bliss� �

     Krishna。 Fearlessness�察�singleness of soul�察�the will Always to strive for 

wisdom�察  �opened   hand   And   governed   appetites�察  �and   piety�察  �And   love   of 

lonely study�察�humbleness�察�Uprightness�察�heed to injure nought which lives�察�

Truthfulness�察  �slowness   unto   wrath�察  �a   mind   That   lightly   letteth   go   what 

others   prize�察�And   equanimity�察  �and   charity Which   spieth   no   man's   faults�察�

and tenderness Towards all that suffer�察�a contented heart�察�Fluttered by no 

desires�察�a bearing mild�察�Modest�察 �and grave�察�with manhood nobly  mixed�察�

With   patience�察  �fortitude�察 �and   purity�察�An   unrevengeful   spirit�察  �never   given 

To rate itself too high��such be the signs�察�O Indian Prince� �of him whose 

feet are set On that fair path which leads to heavenly birth� �

     Deceitfulness�察�and arrogance�察�and pride�察�Quickness to anger�察�harsh and 

evil speech�察�And ignorance�察�to its own darkness blind�察�These be the signs�察�

My Prince� �of him whose birth Is fated for the regions of the vile。��FN#32�А�

     The   Heavenly   Birth   brings   to   deliverance�察  �So   should'st   thou   know� �

The     birth  with   Asuras    Brings    into   bondage。     Be   thou   joyous�察   �Prince� �

Whose lot is set apart for heavenly Birth。 

     Two stamps there are marked on all living men�察�Divine and Undivine�察�

I   spake   to   thee   By   what   marks   thou   shouldst   know   the   Heavenly   Man�察�

Hear from me now of the Unheavenly� �

     They comprehend not�察�the Unheavenly�察�How Souls go forth from Me�察�

nor how they come Back unto Me�此�nor is there Truth in these�察�Nor purity�察�
