and a mean´spirited coward察who dared not fight察and for that reason made
such a fine speech察hoping to intimidate them。 ;Well then察─said he察 if
such is your opinion察why will none of you accept my offer拭you surely
cannot be afraid察 you who are such brave fellows察of such true courage察
and such noble spirits察cannot be afraid of a coward and a bully Why察
therefore察does not one of you step forward察and put my fine speech to the
test拭 Otherwise察after I have thus challenged you all察I hope none for the
future will think they have any right to call me coward察 though I again
declare my fixed resolution against fighting。;
'Just as he said this察 a voice calling for help察 was heard from a lane
adjoining to the play´yard。 Immediately we all flocked to the side
nearest whence it proceeded察and察clambering upon benches察watering´pots察
or whatever came first in our way察 peeped over the wall察 where we
discovered two well´grown lads察about seventeen or eighteen察stripping a
little boy of his clothes察and beating him for his outcries in a most cruel
manner察 and at a little distance farther down the lane察 sat a company of
gypsies察to whom the two lads evidently belonged。 At the sight of this
we were all much distressed察 and wished to relieve the boy察 though察
discovering so large a party察 we were too much afraid to venture察 till
Tomkins the boy I before spoke about instantly jumped from the wall察
and only saying察 Has nobody courage to follow me拭─ran toward them as
fast as possible察and with uncommon strength and agility placed himself
between them and the boy察 and began defending himself in the best
manner he could察which he did for some time with great dexterity察none of
his fighting schoolfellows having courage to go to his assistance。 At
length察 however察 seeing it impossible for him to stand out any longer
against two so much stronger than himself察 the boys agreed to secure
themselves by numbers察 and to sally forth to his assistance altogether。
This scheme succeeded察 and very shortly rescued Tomkins from his

antagonists。 He thanked them for their assistance察 saying察 at the same
time察 I hope you will no longer doubt my courage察or my abilities to fight察
when it is necessary or in a good cause。; After so signal a proof of his
viler察 his greatest enemies could no longer doubt it察 and察 without ever
engaging in foolish battles察he passed through school as much respected as
any boy察and his magnanimity was never again called in question。'
As the gentleman stopped speaking察the little girl called out察'O察papa察
the coach is at the door。' 'Is it察my dear' returned the father。 'Well then察
stop察 my love' said one of the ladies察 'I have got a few cakes for you此
stay察and take them before you go。' She then unlocked the closet where
we were察and took down the paper of macaroons察among which we had so
comfortably regaled ourselves察 when察 observing the hole in the paper
through which we entered察'O dear' she exclaimed察'the mice have actually
got into my cupboard。 I will move all the things out this very morning察
and lock the cat up in it察for I shall be undone if the mice once get footing
here察they will soon spoil all my stores察and that will never do。' She then
kissed both the children察and察giving them the cakes察they察the gentleman察
and another lady察all departed察and she instantly began to move the boxes
and jars from the closet察 whilst we察 terrified almost out of our wits察 sat
trembling behind one of them察 not daring to stir察 yet dreading the cat's
approach every moment。
We were soon察 however察 obliged to move our quarters察 for the lady
taking down the very jar which concealed us察 we were forced without
knowing where we were to jump down instantly。 In vain we sought all
round the room for some avenue whereat we might escape察the apartment
was too well fitted up to admit the smallest crack察 and we must then
certainly have been destroyed察 had we not察 with uncommon presence of
mind察ran up the back of the lady's gown察by which means she lost sight of
us察and gave us an opportunity to make our escape察as she opened the door
to order the cat to be brought in。 We seized the lucky moment察 and察
dropping from her gown察fled with the utmost haste out at the house door察
which happened to be wide open察and I察without once looking behind me察
ran on till I discovered a little crack in the brick wall察which I entered察and
which察after many turnings and windings察brought me to this house察where

I have now continued skulking about in its different apartments for above
a month察 during which time I have not heard the least tidings of my
beloved brother Longtail。 Whether察therefore察any mischief befell him as
he followed me察 or whether he entered the crack with me and then lost
sight of me察I know not察but in vain have I sought him every day since my
arrival within these walls察and so anxious am I to learn what is become of
him察 that I am now come forth察 contrary to my nature察 to engage your
compassion察and to beseech you察in case
At this moment察the door of my room opened察and my servant coming
hastily in察the mouse jumped from my table察and precipitately retreated to
the same hole from whence it first addressed me察 and though I have
several times peeped into it察 and even laid little bits of cake to entice it
back again察yet have I never been able to see it any where since。 Should
either that察or any other察ever again favour me so far with their confidence察
as to instruct me with their history察I will certainly communicate it with all
possible speed to my little readers察who I hope have been wise enough to
attend to the advice given them in the preceding pages察 although it was
delivered to them by one as insignificant as a MOUSE。

PART II。
INTRODUCTION
It is now some months ago since I took leave of my little readers察
promising察in case I should ever hear any further tidings of either Nimble
or Longtail察I would certainly communicate it to them察and察as I think it
extremely wrong not to fulfil any engagement we enter into察I look upon
myself bound to give them all the information I have since gained察relating
to those two little animals察and I doubt not but they will be glad to hear
what happened to them察 after Nimble was frightened from my writing
table by the entrance of my servant。 If I recollect right察I have already
told you察that I frequently peeped into the hole in the skirting´board察and
laid bits of cake to try to entice my little companion back察but all to no
purpose此 and I had quite given over all hopes of ever again seeing him察
when one day察as I was putting my hand into a large jar察which had some
Turkey figs in it察 I felt something soft at the bottom察 and taking it out察
found it to be a poor little mouse察not quite dead察but so starved and weak察
that upon my placing it upon the table察it had not strength sufficient to get
from me。 A little boy happened to be standing by me察 who察 upon the
sight of the mouse察began to beg me to give it to the cat察or kill it察'for I
don't like mice' said he察 'pray察 ma'am察 put it away。' 'Not like mice'
replied I察'what can be your objection to such a little soft creature as this'
and taking advantage of its weakness察 I picked it up察 and held it in the
palm of one hand察whilst I stroked it with the fingers of my right。 'Poor
little mouse' said I察'who can be afraid of such a little object as this拭 Do
you not feel ashamed of yourself察Joe察to fear such a little creature as this拭
Only look at it察observe how small it is察and then consider your own size察
and surely察 my dear察you will blush to think of being no more of a man
than to fear a mouse Look at me察Joe' continued I察'see察I will kiss it察I
am not at all afraid that it will hurt me。' When察lifting it up toward my face察
I heard it say察 in the faintest voice possible察 'Do you not know me' I
instantly recollected my little friend Nimble察 and rejoiced at so
unexpectedly finding him。 'What察 is it you察 little Nimble' exclaimed I察
'that I again behold拭 Believe me察 I am heartily rejoiced once more to
