of mortar which we stepped upon gave way beneath our feet察and tumbled

us down together with them lower than when we first set off。 However察

as we were very light察we were not much hurt by our falls察only indeed

poor Brighteyes察by endeavouring to save himself察caught by his nails on a

rafter察and tore one of them from off his right fore´foot察which was very

sore and inconvenient。 At length we surmounted all difficulties察 and察

invited by a strong scent of plum´cake察entered a closet察where we found a

fine large one察quite whole and entire。 We immediately set about making

our way into it察which we easily effected察as it was most deliciously nice察

and not at all hard to our teeth。

Brighteyes察 who had not before partaken of the bird´seed察 was

overjoyed at the sight。 He almost forgot the pain of his foot察and soon

buried himself withinside the cake察whilst I察who had pretty well satisfied

my hunger before察only ate a few of the crumbs察and then went to take a

survey of the adjoining apartment。 I crept softly under the door of the

closet into a room察as large as that which I had before been in察though not

so elegantly furnished察for察instead of being covered with a carpet察there

was only a small one round the bed察and near the fire was a cradle察with a

cleanly´looking woman sitting by it察rocking it with her foot察whilst at the

same time she was combing the head of a little boy about four years old。

In the middle of the room stood a table察covered with a great deal of litter察

and in one corner was the little girl whom I had before seen with her

mamma察crying and sobbing as if her heart would break。 As I made not

the least noise at my entrance察 no one observed me for some time察 so

creeping under one of the beds察I heard the following discourse此

'It does not signify察 miss' said the woman察 who I found was the

children's nurse察'I never will put up with such behaviour此 you know that

I always do everything for you when you speak prettily察but to be ordered

to dress you in such a manner察is what I never will submit to此 and you

shall go undressed all day before I will dress you察unless you ask me as

you ought to do。' Nancy made no reply察 but only continued crying。

'Aye you may cry and sob as much as you please' said the nurse察'I do not

care for that此 I shall not dress you for crying and roaring察but for being

good and speaking with civility。' Just as she said these words察the door

opened察 and in came the lady whom I before saw察 and whose name I

afterwards found was Artless。 As soon as she entered察 the nurse

addressed her察saying察'Pray察madam察is it by your desire that Miss Nancy

behaves so rudely察and bids me dress her directly察and change the buckles

in her shoes察or else she will slap my face拭 Indeed she did give me a slap

upon my hand察so I told her察that I would not dress her at all察for really察

madam察I thought you would not wish me to do it察whilst she behaved so察

and I took the liberty of putting her to stand in the corner。' 'I do not

think' replied Mrs。 Artless察'that she deserves to stand in the room at all察or

in the house either察if she behaves in that manner此 if she does not speak

civilly when she wants to be assisted察let her go without help察and see what

will become of her then。 I am quite ashamed of you察Nancy I could

not have thought you would behave so察but since you have察I promise that

you shall not be dressed today察or have any assistance given you察unless

you speak in a very different manner。'

Whilst Mrs。 Artless was talking察 nurse went out of the room。 Mrs。

Artless then took her seat by the cradle察and looking into it察found the child

awake察and I saw her take out a fine little girl察about five months old此 she

then continued her discourse察saying察'Look here察Nancy察look at this little

baby察see how unable it is to help itself察were we to neglect attending to it察

what do yon think would become of it拭 Suppose I were now to put your

sister upon the floor察and there leave her察tell me what do you think she

could do察 or what would become of her' Nancy sobbed out察 that she

would die。 'And pray察 my dear' continued Mrs。 Artless察 'if we were to

leave you to yourself察 what would become of you拭 It is true察 you talk

and run about better than Polly此 but not a bit better could you provide for察

or take care of yourself。 Could you buy or dress your own victuals拭

could you light your own fire拭could you clean your own house察or open

and shut the doors and windows拭 could you make your own clothes察 or

even put them on without some assistance察when made拭 And who do you

think will do anything for you察 if you are not good察 and do not speak

civilly拭 Not I察I promise you察neither shall nurse察nor any of the servants察

for though I pay them wages to help to do my business for me察 I never

want them to do anything unless they are desired in a pretty manner。

Should you like察if when I want you to pick up my scissors察or do any little

job察I were to say察 Pick up my scissors this moment察or I will slap your

face拭─ Should not you think that it sounded very cross and disagreeable'

'Yes察madam' replied Nancy。 'Then why' rejoined Mrs。 Artless察'should

you speak cross to anybody察particularly to servants and poor people拭for

to behave so to them察is not only cross察but insolent and proud此 it is as if

you thought that because they are rather poorer察they are not so good as

yourself察whereas察I assure you察poverty makes no difference in the merit

of people察for those only are deserving of respect who are truly good察and

a beggar who is virtuous察is far better than a prince who is wicked。' I was

prevented from hearing any more of this very just discourse察by the little

boy's opening the door and letting in a cat察which察though it was the first

that I had ever seen in my life察 I was certain was the same destructive

animal to our race察which I had frequently heard my mother describe。 I

therefore made all possible haste back to the closet察 and warning

Brighteyes of our danger察we instantly returned by the same way which we

came察to our two brothers察whom we found waiting for us察and wondering

at our long absence。 We related to them the dainty cheer which we had

met with察 and agreed to conduct them thither in the evening。

Accordingly察as soon as it grew towards dusk察we climbed up the wall察and

all four together attacked the plum´cake察which no one had touched since

we left it察 but scarcely had we all seated ourselves round it察 than on a

                                                 11

sudden the closet´door opened察 and a woman entered。 Away we all

scampered as fast as possible察but poor Brighteyes察who could not move

quite so fast on account of his sore toe察and who likewise having advanced

farther into the cake察was discovered before he could reach the crack by

which we entered。 The woman察who had a knife in her hand察struck at

him with it察at the same time exclaiming察'Bless me察nurse察here is a mouse

in the closet' Happily察she missed her aim察and he only received a small

wound on the tip of his tail。 This interruption sadly alarmed us察and it

was above an hour before we could have courage to venture back察when

finding everything quiet察 except Mrs。 Nurse's singing to her child察 we

again crept out察 and once more surrounded the cake。 We continued

without any further alarm till we were perfectly satisfied察and then retired

to a little distance behind the wainscot察determined there to sleep察and to

breakfast on the cake the next day。

Early in the morning I waked察and calling my brothers察we all marched

forward察and soon arrived at the delightful cake察where we highly enjoyed

ourselves without the least disturbance察 till our appetites were fully

satisfied。 We then retired察took a little run round some other parts of the

house察but met with nothing worth relating。 At noon we again made our

way into the closet察intending to dine on the dish on which we breakfasted察

but察 to our no small mortification察 the delicious dainty was removed。

This you may be sure was a sad disappointment察 yet as we were not

extremely hungry察we had time to look about for more。 We were not long

in finding it察for upon the same shelf from which the cake was removed察

there was a round tin box察the lid of which was not quite close shut down察

into this we all crept察and were highly regaled with some nice lumps of

sugar。 Bu
