                           THE TRAGEDY OF JULIUS CAESAR

we shall have him well to friend。 CASSIUS。 I wish we may察but yet have I

a mind That fears him much察and my misgiving still Falls shrewdly to the

purpose。 Re´enter Antony。

BRUTUS。 But here comes Antony。 Welcome察 Mark Antony。

ANTONY。 O mighty Caesar Dost thou lie so low拭Are all thy conquests察

glories察triumphs察 spoils察 Shrunk to this little measure拭Fare thee well。 I

know not察gentlemen察what you intend察Who else must be let blood察who

else is rank。 If I myself察there is no hour so fit As Caesar's death's hour察nor

no instrument Of half that worth as those your swords察made rich With the

most noble blood of all this world。 I do beseech ye察if you bear me hard察

Now察whilst your purpled hands do reek and smoke察Fulfill your pleasure。

Live a thousand years察I shall not find myself so apt to die察No place will

please me so察no means of death察As here by Caesar察and by you cut off察

The choice and master spirits of this age。 BRUTUS。 O Antony察 beg not

your death of us Though now we must appear bloody and cruel察As察by

our hands and this our present act You see we do察 yet see you but our

hands And this the bleeding business they have done。 Our hearts you see

not察they are pitiful察And pity to the general wrong of Rome´ As fire drives

out fire察so pity pity´ Hath done this deed on Caesar。 For your part察To you

our swords have leaden points察 Mark Antony察 Our arms in strength of

malice察and our hearts Of brothers' temper察do receive you in With all kind

love察 good thoughts察 and reverence。 CASSIUS。 Your voice shall be as

strong as any man's In the disposing of new dignities。 BRUTUS。 Only be

patient till we have appeased The multitude察beside themselves with fear察

And then we will deliver you the cause Why I察that did love Caesar when I

struck him察Have thus proceeded。 ANTONY。 I doubt not of your wisdom。

Let each man render me his bloody hand。 First察 Marcus Brutus察 will I

shake with you察Next察Caius Cassius察do I take your hand察Now察Decius

Brutus察yours察now yours察Metellus察Yours察Cinna察and察my valiant Casca察

yours察Though last察 not least in love察 yours察 good Trebonius。 Gentlemen

all´ alas察what shall I say拭My credit now stands on such slippery ground察

That one of two bad ways you must conceit me察 Either a coward or a

flatterer。 That I did love thee察Caesar察O察'tis true If then thy spirit look

upon us now察 Shall it not grieve thee dearer than thy death To see thy

Antony making his peace察 Shaking the bloody fingers of thy foes察 Most

noble In the presence of thy corse拭 Had I as many eyes as thou hast

wounds察Weeping as fast as they stream forth thy blood察It would become

me better than to close In terms of friendship with thine enemies。 Pardon

me察Julius Here wast thou bay'd察brave hart察Here didst thou fall察and here

thy hunters stand察Sign'd in thy spoil察and crimson'd in thy Lethe。 O world察

thou wast the forest to this hart察And this察indeed察O world察the heart of

thee。 How like a deer strucken by many princes Dost thou here lie

CASSIUS。 Mark Antony´ ANTONY。 Pardon me察 Caius Cassius。 The

enemies of Caesar shall say this此 Then察 in a friend察 it is cold modesty。

CASSIUS。 I blame you not for praising Caesar so察 But what compact

mean you to have with us拭Will you be prick'd in number of our friends察

Or shall we on察and not depend on you拭ANTONY。 Therefore I took your

hands察but was indeed Sway'd from the point by looking down on Caesar。

Friends am I with you all and love you all察Upon this hope that you shall

give me reasons Why and wherein Caesar was dangerous。 BRUTUS。 Or

else were this a savage spectacle。 Our reasons are so full of good regard

That were you察 Antony察 the son of Caesar察 You should be satisfied。

ANTONY。 That's all I seek察And am moreover suitor that I may Produce

his body to the marketplace察And in the pulpit察as becomes a friend察Speak

in the order of his funeral。 BRUTUS。 You shall察Mark Antony。 CASSIUS。

Brutus察a word with you。 Aside to Brutus。АYou know not what you do。

Do not consent That Antony speak in his funeral。 Know you how much the

people may be moved By that which he will utter拭 BRUTUS。 By your

pardon察 I will myself into the pulpit first察 And show the reason of our

Caesar's death。 What Antony shall speak察I will protest He speaks by leave

and by permission察And that we are contented Caesar shall Have all true

rites and lawful ceremonies。 It shall advantage more than do us wrong。

CASSIUS。 I know not what may fall察I like it not。 BRUTUS。 Mark Antony察

here察take you Caesar's body。 You shall not in your funeral speech blame

us察But speak all good you can devise of Caesar察And say you do't by our

permission察Else shall you not have any hand at all About his funeral。 And

you shall speak In the same pulpit whereto I am going察After my speech is

ended。 ANTONY。 Be it so察 I do desire no more。 BRUTUS。 Prepare the

thou bleeding piece of earth察 That I am meek and gentle with these

butchers Thou art the ruins of the noblest man That ever lived in the tide

of times。 Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood Over thy wounds

now do I prophesy Which like dumb mouths do ope their ruby lips To beg

the voice and utterance of my tongue A curse shall light upon the limbs of

men察 Domestic fury and fierce civil strife Shall cumber all the parts of

Italy察 Blood and destruction shall be so in use察And dreadful objects so

familiar察 That mothers shall but smile when they behold Their infants

       Enter a Servant。

You serve Octavius Caesar察 do you not拭 SERVANT。 I do察 Mark

Antony。 ANTONY。 Caesar did write for him to come to Rome。 SERVANT。

He did receive his letters察and is coming察And bid me say to you by word

of mouth´ O Caesar Sees the body。 ANTONY。 Thy heart is big察get thee

apart and weep。 Passion察 I see察 is catching察 for mine eyes察 Seeing those

beads of sorrow stand in thine察 Began to water。 Is thy master coming拭

SERVANT。 He lies tonight within seven leagues of Rome。 ANTONY。 Post

back with speed and tell him what hath chanced。 Here is a mourning Rome察

a dangerous Rome察No Rome of safety for Octavius yet察Hie hence察and

tell him so。 Yet stay awhile察Thou shalt not back till I have borne this corse

Into the marketplace。 There shall I try察In my oration察how the people take

The cruel issue of these bloody men察According to the which thou shalt

discourse To young Octavius of the state of things。 Lend me your hand。

Exeunt with Caesar's body。
