handsomer she appeared to be。 He asked her whether she was yet
betrothed察and she answered察laughingly察 that she was free。 Then察 in her
turn察 she asked Minokichi whether he was married察 or pledge to marry察
and he told her that察although he had only a widowed mother to support察
the question of an ;honorable daughter´in´law; had not yet been
considered察as he was very young。。。 After these confidences察they walked
on for a long while without speaking察but察as the proverb declares察Ki ga
areba察 me mo kuchi hodo ni mono wo iu此 When the wish is there察 the
eyes can say as much as the mouth。; By the time they reached the village察
they had become very much pleased with each other察and then Minokichi
asked O´Yuki to rest awhile at his house。 After some shy hesitation察she
went there with him察and his mother made her welcome察and prepared a
warm meal for her。 O´Yuki behaved so nicely that Minokichi's mother
took a sudden fancy to her察and persuaded her to delay her journey to Yedo。
And the natural end of the matter was that Yuki never went to Yedo at all。
She remained in the house察as an ;honorable daughter´in´law。;
O´Yuki proved a very good daughter´in´law。 When Minokichi's mother
came to die察 some five years later察 her last words were words of
affection and praise for the wife of her son。 And O´Yuki bore Minokichi
ten children察boys and girls察handsome children all of them察and very fair
of skin。
The country´folk thought O´Yuki a wonderful person察 by nature
different from themselves。 Most of the peasant´women age early察but O´
Yuki察 even after having become the mother of ten children察 looked as
young and fresh as on the day when she had first come to the village。
One night察after the children had gone to sleep察O´Yuki was sewing by
the light of a paper lamp察and Minokichi察watching her察said此

;To see you sewing there察with the light on your face察makes me think
of a strange thing that happened when I was a lad of eighteen。 I then saw
somebody as beautiful and white as you are now indeed察she was very
like you。;。。。
Without lifting her eyes from her work察O´Yuki responded此
;Tell me about her。。。 Where did you see her拭
Then Minokichi told her about the terrible night in the ferryman's
hut察 and about the White Woman that had stooped above him察 smiling
and whispering察and about the silent death of old Mosaku。 And he said此
;Asleep or awake察 that was the only time that I saw a being as
beautiful as you。 Of course察she was not a human being察and I was afraid
of her察very much afraid察but she was so white 。。 Indeed察I have never
been sure whether it was a dream that I saw察or the Woman of theSnow。;。。。
O´Yuki flung down her sewing察 and arose察 and bowed above
Minokichi where he sat察and shrieked into his face此
;It was I I I Yuki it was And I told you then that I would kill
you if you ever said one work about it 。。 But for those children asleep
there察I would kill you this moment And now you had better take very察
very good care of them察for if ever they have reason to complain of you察I
will treat you as you deserve ─。。
Even as she screamed察her voice became thin察like a crying of wind察
then she melted into a bright white mist that spired to the roof´beams察and
shuddered away through the smoke´hold。。。 Never again was she seen。

THE STORY OF AOYAGI
In the era of Bummei 1469´1486Аthere was a young samurai called
Tomotada in the service of Hatakeyama Yoshimune察the Lord of Noto 1。
Tomotada was a native of Echizen 2察 but at an early age he had been
taken察 as page察 into the palace of the daimyo of Noto察 and had been
educated察under the supervision of that prince察for the profession of arms。
As he grew up察he proved himself both a good scholar and a good soldier察
and continued to enjoy the favor of his prince。 Being gifted with an
amiable character察a winning address察and a very handsome person察he was
admired and much liked by his samurai´comrades。
When Tomotada was about twenty years old察 he was sent upon a
private mission to Hosokawa Masamoto察 the great daimyo of Kyoto察 a
kinsman of Hatakeyama Yoshimune。 Having been ordered to journey
through Echizen察 the youth requested and obtained permission to pay a
visit察on the way察to his widowed mother。
It was the coldest period of the year when he started察 and察 though
mounted upon a powerful horse察 he found himself obliged to proceed
slowly。 The road which he followed passed through a mountain´district
where the settlements were few and far between察and on the second day of
his journey察after a weary ride of hours察he was dismayed to find that he
could not reached his intended halting´place until late in the night。 He had
reason to be anxious察for a heavy snowstorm came on察with an intensely
cold wind察 and the horse showed signs of exhaustion。 But in that trying
moment察Tomotada unexpectedly perceived the thatched room of a cottage
on the summit of a near hill察 where willow´trees were growing。 With
difficulty he urged his tired animal to the dwelling察and he loudly knocked
upon the storm´doors察 which had been closed against the wind。 An old
woman opened them察 and cried out compassionately at the sight of the
handsome stranger此 Ah察how pitiful a young gentleman traveling alone
in such weather 。。 Deign察young master察to enter。;
Tomotada dismounted察and after leading his horse to a shed in the rear察

entered the cottage察 where he saw an old man and a girl warming
themselves by a fire of bamboo splints。 They respectfully invited him to
approach the fire察 and the old folks then proceeded to warm some rice´
wine察and to prepare food for the traveler察whom they ventured to question
in regard to his journey。 Meanwhile the young girl disappeared behind a
screen。 Tomotada had observed察 with astonishment察 that she was
extremely beautiful察 though her attire was of the most wretched kind察
and her long察loose hair in disorder。 He wondered that so handsome a girl
should be living in such a miserable and lonesome place。
The old man said to him此
;Honored Sir察the next village is far察and the snow is falling thickly。
The wind is piercing察 and the road is very bad。 Therefore察 to proceed
further this night would probably be dangerous。 Although this hovel is
unworthy of your presence察and although we have not any comfort to offer察
perhaps it were safer to remain to´night under this miserable roof。。。 We
would take good care of your horse。;
Tomotada accepted this humble proposal察 secretly glad of the
chance thus afforded him to see more of the young girl。 Presently a coarse
but ample meal was set before him察 and the girl came from behind the
screen察to serve the wine。 She was now reclad察in a rough but cleanly robe
of homespun察 and her long察 loose hair had been neatly combed and
smoothed。 As she bent forward to fill his cup察Tomotada was amazed to
perceive that she was incomparably more beautiful than any woman whom
he had ever before seen察and there was a grace about her every motion that
astonished him。 But the elders began to apologize for her察saying此 Sir察our
daughter察Aoyagi察。1Аhas been brought up here in the mountains察almost
alone察 and she knows nothing of gentle service。 We pray that you will
pardon her stupidity and her ignorance。; Tomotada protested that he
deemed himself lucky to be waited upon by so comely a maiden。 He could
not turn his eyes away from her though he saw that his admiring gaze
made her blush察and he left the wine and food untasted before him。 The
mother said此 Kind Sir察we very much hope that you will try to eat and to
drink a little察though our peasant´fare is of the worst察as you must have
been chilled by that piercing wind。; Then察 to please the old folks察

Tomotada ate and drank as he could察 but the charm of the blushing girl
still grew upon him。 He talked with her察 and found that her speech was
sweet as her face。 Brought up in the mountains as she might have been察
but察 in that case察 her parents must at some time been persons of high
degree察 for she spoke and moved like a damsel of rank。 Suddenly he
addressed her with a poem which was also a question inspired by
