                               ELECTRA

SCENE此 At Mycenae察before the palace of the Pelopidae。 It is morning

and the new´risen sun is bright。 The PAEDAGOGUS enters on the left

of the spectators察accompanied by the two youths察ORESTES and

PYLADES。

  PAEDAGOGUS

SON of him who led our hosts at Troy of old察son of Agamemnon now

thou mayest behold with thine eyes all that thy soul hath desired so

long。 There is the ancient Argos of thy yearning察 that hallowed scene

whence the gadfly drove the daughter of Inachus察and there察Orestes

is the Lycean Agora察named from the wolf´slaying god察there察on the

left察Hera's famous temple察and in this place to which we have come

deem that thou seest Mycenae rich in gold察with the house of the

Pelopidae there察so often stained with bloodshed察whence I carried

thee of yore察from the slaying of thy father察as thy kinswoman察thy

sister察charged me察and saved thee察and reared thee up to manhood

to be the avenger of thy murdered sire。

    Now察therefore察Orestes察and thou察best of friends察Pylades察our

plans must be laid quickly察for lo察already the sun's bright ray is

waking the songs of the birds into clearness察and the dark night of

stars is spent。 Before察then察anyone comes forth from the house

take counsel察seeing that the time allows not of delay察but is full

ripe for deeds。

  ORESTES

True friend and follower察how well dost thou prove thy loyalty

to our house As a steed of generous race察though old察loses not

courage in danger察but pricks his ear察even so thou urgest us forward

and art foremost in our support。 I will tell thee察then察what I have

determined察listen closely to my words察and correct me察if I miss

the mark in aught。

When I went to the Pythian oracle察to learn how I might avenge

my father on his murderers察Phoebus gave me the response which thou

art now to hear此 that alone察and by stealth察without aid of arms or

numbers察I should snatch the righteous vengeance of my hand。 Since

then察the god spake to us on this wise察thou must go into yonder

house察when opportunity gives thee entrance察and learn all that is

passing there察so that thou mayest report to us from sure knowledge。

Thine age察and the lapse of time察will prevent them from recognising

thee察they will never suspect who thou art察with that silvered hair。

Let thy tale be that thou art a Phocian stranger察sent by Phanoteus

for he is the greatest of their allies。 Tell them察and confirm it with

thine oath察that Orestes hath perished by a fatal chance察 hurled at

the Pythian games from his rapid chariot察be that the substance of thy

story。

We察meanwhile察will first crown my father's tomb察as the god

enjoined察with drink´offerings and the luxuriant tribute of severed

hair察then come back察bearing in our hands an urn of shapely

bronze察now hidden in the brushwood察as I think thou knowest察 so to

gladden them with the false tidings that this my body is no more

but has been consumed with fire and turned to ashes。 Why should the

omen trouble me察when by a feigned death I find life indeed察and win

renown拭I trow察no word is ill´omened察if fraught with gain。 Often ere

now have I seen wise men die in vain report察then察when they return

home察they are held in more abiding honour此as I trust that from

this rumour I also shall emerge in radiant life察and yet shine like

a star upon my foes。

O my fatherland察and ye gods of the land察receive me with good

fortune in this journey察 and ye also察halls of my fathers察for I come

with divine mandate to cleanse you righteously察send me not

dishonoured from the land察but grant that I may rule over my

possessions察and restore my house

Enough察 be it now thy care察old man察to go and heed thy task

and we twain will go forth察for so occasion bids察chief ruler of every

enterprise for men。

  ELECTRA within

    Ah me察ah me

  PAEDAGOGUS

Hark察my son察 from the doors察methought察came the sound of some

handmaid moaning within。

  ORESTES

Can it be the hapless Electra拭Shall we stay here察and listen to

her laments

  PAEDAGOGUS

No察no此before all else察let us seek to obey the command of

Loxias察and thence make a fair beginning察by pouring libations to

thy sire察that brings victory within our grasp察and gives us the

mastery in all that we do。

Exeunt PAEDAGOGUS on the spectators' left察ORESTES and PYLADES

the right。´ Enter ELECTRA察from the house。 She is meanly clad。

  ELECTRA chanting

                                                               systema

O thou pure sunlight察and thou air察earth's canopy察how often have

ye heard the strains of my lament察the wild blows dealt against this

bleeding breast察when dark night fails And my wretched couch in

yonder house of woe knows well察ere now察how I keep the watches of the

night察 how often I bewail my hapless sire察to whom deadly Ares gave

not of his gifts in a strange land察but my mother察and her mate

Aegisthus察cleft his head with murderous axe察as woodmen fell an

oak。 And for this no plaint bursts from any lip save mine察when

thou察my father察hath died a death so cruel and so piteous

                                                           antisystema

But never will I cease from dirge and sore lament察while I look on

the trembling rays of the bright stars察or on this light of day察but

like the nightingale察slayer of her offspring察I will wail without

ceasing察and cry aloud to all察here察at the doors of my father。

O home of Hades and Persephone O Hermes of the shades potent

Curse察and ye察dread daughters of the gods察Erinyes察 Ye who behold

when a life is reft by violence察when a bed is dishonoured by

stealth察 come察help me察avenge the murder of my sire察 and send to me

my brother察for I have no more the strength to bear up alone against

the load of grief that weighs me down。

                   As ELECTRA finishes her lament

the CHORUS OF WOMEN OF MYCENAE enter。 The following

lines between ELECTRA and the CHORUS are chanted responsively。

  CHORUS

                                                             strophe 1

Ah察Electra察child of a wretched mother察why art thou ever

pining thus in ceaseless lament for Agamemnon察who long ago was

wickedly ensnared by thy false mother's wiles察and betrayed to death

by dastardly hand拭Perish the author of that deed察if I may utter such

prayer

  ELECTRA

Ah察noble´hearted maidens察ye have come to soothe my woes。 I

know and feel it察it escapes me not察but I cannot leave this task

undone察or cease from mourning for my hapless sire。 Ah察friends

whose love responds to mine in every mood察leave me to rave thus察

Oh leave me察I entreat you

  CHORUS

                                                         antistrophe 1

But never by laments or prayers shalt thou recall thy sire from

that lake of Hades to which all must pass。 Nay察thine is a fatal

course of grief察passing ever from due bounds into a cureless

sorrow察wherein there is no deliverance from evils。 Say察wherefore art

thou enamoured of misery

  ELECTRA

Foolish is the child who forgets a parent's piteous death。 No

dearer to my soul is the mourner that laments for Itys察Itys

evermore察that bird distraught with grief察the messenger of Zeus。

Ah察queen of sorrow察Niobe察thee I deem divine察 thee察who evermore

weepest in thy rocky tomb

  CHORUS

                                                             strophe 2

Not to thee alone of mortals察my daughter察hath come any sorrow

which thou bearest less calmly than those within察thy kinswomen and

sisters察Chrysothemis and IphianassaI who still live察 as he察too

lives察sorrowing in a secluded youth察yet happy in that this famous

realm of Mycenae shall one day welcome him to his heritage察when the

kindly guidance of Zeus shall have brought him to this land察Orestes。

  ELECTRA

Yes察I wait for him with unwearied longing察as I move on my sad

path from day to day察unwed and childless察bathed in tears察bearing

that endless doom of woe察but he forgets all that he has suffered

and heard。 What message comes to me察that is not belied拭He is ever

yearning to be with us察but察though he yearns察he never resolves。

  CHORUS

                                                         antistrophe 2

Courage察my daughter察courage察great still in heaven is Zeus

who sees and governs all此leave thy bitter quarrel to him察forget

not thy foes察but refrain from excess of wrath against them察for

Time is god who makes rough ways smooth。 Not heedless is the son of

Agamemnon察who dwells by Crisa's pastoral shore察not heedless is the

god who reigns by Acheron。

  ELECTRA

Nay察the best part of life hath passed away from me in

hopelessness察and I have no strength left察I察who am pining away

without children察 whom no loving champion shields察 but察like some

despised alien察I serve in the halls of my father察clad in this mean

garb察and standing at a meagre board。

  CHORUS

                                                             strophe 3

Piteous was the voice heard at his return察and piteou
