goodly palace of the Pope察And察'cause we are no common guests察I choose
his privy´chamber for our use。
FAUSTUS。 I hope his Holiness will bid us welcome。
MEPHIST。 All's one察for we'll be bold with his venison。 But now察my
Faustus察that thou mayst perceive What Rome contains for to delight thine
eyes察 Know that this city stands upon seven hills That underprop the
groundwork of the same此 Just through the midst runs flowing
Tiber's stream察With winding banks that cut it in two parts察Over the which
two stately bridges lean察That make safe passage to each part of Rome此
Upon the bridge call'd Ponte Angelo Erected is a castle passing
strong察Where thou shalt see such store of ordnance察As that the double
cannons察forg'd of brass察Do match the number of the days contain'd
Within the compass of one complete year察 Beside the gates察 and high
pyramides察That Julius Caesar brought from Africa。
FAUSTUS。 Now察 by the kingdoms of infernal rule察 Of Styx察 of
Acheron察and the fiery lake Of ever´burning Phlegethon察I swear That I do
long to see the monuments And situation of bright´splendent Rome此
Come察therefore察let's away。
MEPHIST。 Nay察stay察my Faustus此 I know you'd see the Pope察And
take some part of holy Peter's feast察The which察 in state and high
solemnity察 This day察 is held through Rome and Italy察 In honour of the

Pope's triumphant victory。
FAUSTUS。 Sweet Mephistophilis察thou pleasest me。 Whilst I am here
on earth察let me be cloy'd With all things that delight the heart of man此My
four´and´twenty years of liberty I'll spend in pleasure and in dalliance察
That Faustus' name察 whilst this bright frame doth stand察 May be
admir'd thorough the furthest land。
MEPHIST。 'Tis well said察 Faustus。 Come察 then察 stand by me察 And
thou shalt see them come immediately。
FAUSTUS。 Nay察 stay察 my gentle Mephistophilis察 And grant me
my request察 and then I go。 Thou know'st察 within the compass of
eight days We view'd the face of heaven察of earth察and hell察So high our
dragons soar'd into the air察That察looking down察the earth appear'd to me
No bigger than my hand in quantity察There did we view the kingdoms of
the world察And what might please mine eye I there beheld。 Then in this
show let me an actor be察That this proud Pope may Faustus' cunning
see。
MEPHIST。 Let it be so察my Faustus。 But察first察stay察And view their
triumphs as they pass this way察And then devise what best contents thy
mind察 By cunning in thine art to cross the Pope察 Or dash the pride of
this solemnity察To make his monks and abbots stand like apes察And
point like antics at his triple crown察 To beat the beads about the
friars' pates察Or clap huge horns upon the Cardinals' heads察Or any villany
thou canst devise察And I'll perform it察Faustus。 Hark they come此
This day shall make thee be admir'd in Rome。
Enter the CARDINALS and BISHOPS察some bearing crosiers察some
the pillars察 MONKS and FRIARS察 singing their procession察 then the
POPE察 RAYMOND king of Hungary察 the ARCHBISHOP OF RHEIMS察
BRUNO led in chains察and ATTENDANTS。
POPE。 Cast down our footstool。
RAYMOND。 Saxon Bruno察 stoop察 Whilst on thy back his Holiness
ascends Saint Peter's chair and state pontifical。
BRUNO。 Proud Lucifer察 that state belongs to me察 But thus I fall to
Peter察not to thee。
POPE。 To me and Peter shalt thou grovelling lie察And crouch before

the Papal dignity。 Sound trumpets察 then察 for thus Saint Peter's heir察
〃From Bruno's back察 ascends Saint Peter's chair。 A flourish while he
ascends。АThus察as the gods creep on with feet of wool察Long ere with iron
hands they punish men察So shall our sleeping vengeance now arise察And
smite with death thy hated enterprise。 Lord Cardinals of France
and Padua察Go forthwith to our holy consistory察And read察amongst
the statutes decretal察What察by the holy council held at Trent察The sacred
synod hath decreed for him That doth assume the Papal government
Without election and a true consent此Away察and bring us word with speed。
CARDINAL OF FRANCE。 We go察my lord。 Exeunt CARDINALS of
France and Padua。А
POPE。 Lord Raymond。 They converse in dumb show。А
FAUSTUS。 Go察haste thee察gentle Mephistophilis察Follow the cardinals
to the consistory察And察as they turn their superstitious books察Strike them
with sloth and drowsy idleness察And make them sleep so sound察 that in
their shapes Thyself and I may parley with this Pope察This proud
confronter of the Emperor察And察in despite of all his holiness察Restore this
Bruno to his liberty察And bear him to the states of Germany。
MEPHIST。 Faustus察I go。
FAUSTUS。 Despatch it soon此The Pope shall curse察that Faustus came
to Rome。 Exeunt FAUSTUS and MEPHISTOPHILIS。А
BRUNO。 Pope Adrian察let me have right of law此I was elected
by the Emperor。
POPE。 We will depose the Emperor for that deed察 And curse the
people that submit to him此 Both he and thou shall stand
excommunicate察And interdict from church's privilege And all society of
holy men。 He grows too proud in his authority察 Lifting his lofty head
above the clouds察And察like a steeple察overpeers the church此But we'll pull
down his haughty insolence察And察as Pope Alexander察our progenitor察Trod
on the neck of German Frederick察 Adding this golden sentence to our
praise察 That Peter's heirs should tread on Emperors察And walk upon the
dreadful adder's back察Treading the lion and the dragon down察And fearless
spurn the killing basilisk察─So will we quell that haughty schismatic察And察
by authority apostolical察Depose him from his regal government。

FROM THE QUARTO OF 1616。
BRUNO。 Pope Julius swore to princely Sigismond察 For him and the
succeeding Popes of Rome察To hold the Emperors their lawful lords。
POPE。 Pope Julius did abuse the church's rights察And therefore none of
his decrees can stand。 Is not all power on earth bestow'd on us拭 And
therefore察though we would察we cannot err。 Behold this silver belt察whereto
is fix'd Seven golden seals察fast sealed with seven seals察In token of our
seven´fold power from heaven察 To bind or loose察 lock fast察 condemn or
judge察Resign or seal察or what so pleaseth us此Then he and thou察and all the
world察shall stoop察Or be assured of our dreadful curse察To light as heavy
as the pains of hell。
Re´enter FAUSTUS and MEPHISTOPHILIS察 in the shapes of the
CARDINALS of France and Padua。
MEPHIST。 Now tell me察Faustus察are we not fitted well拭
FAUSTUS。 Yes察Mephistophilis察and two such cardinals Ne'er serv'd a
holy Pope as we shall do。 But察whilst they sleep within the consistory察Let
us salute his reverend fatherhood。
RAYMOND。 Behold察my lord察the Cardinals are return'd。
POPE。 Welcome察grave fathers此answer presently What hath our
holy council there decreed Concerning Bruno and the Emperor察 In
quittance of their late conspiracy Against our state and papal dignity拭
FAUSTUS。 Most sacred patron of the church of Rome察By full consent
of all the synod Of priests and prelates察 it is thus decreed察 That
Bruno and the German Emperor Be held as Lollards and bold schismatics察
And proud disturbers of the church's peace察And if that Bruno察by his own
assent察Without enforcement of the German peers察 Did seek to wear the
triple diadem察And by your death to climb Saint Peter's chair察The statutes
decretal have thus decreed察 He shall be straight condemn'd of heresy察
And on a pile of faggots burnt to death。
POPE。 It is enough。 Here察 take him to your charge察And bear him
straight to Ponte Angelo察And in the strongest tower enclose him
fast。 To´morrow察 sitting in our consistory察 With all our college of grave
cardinals察 We will determine of his life or death。 Here察 take his
triple crown along with you察And leave it in the church's treasury。 Make
haste again察my good Lord Cardinals察And take our blessing apostolical。
