They lifted her up again。
;Enough It's over Farewell察poor thing I am done for I am
broken ─she cried with vindictive despair察and her head fell
heavily back on the pillow。
She sank into unconsciousness again察but this time it did not last
long。 Her pale察yellow察wasted face dropped back察her mouth fell open察
her leg moved convulsively察she gave a deep察deep sigh and died。
Sonia fell upon her察flung her arms about her察and remained
motionless with her head pressed to the dead woman's wasted bosom。
Polenka threw herself at her mother's feet察kissing them and weeping
violently。 Though Kolya and Lida did not understand what had happened察
they had a feeling that it was something terrible察they put their
hands on each other's little shoulders察stared straight at one another
and both at once opened their mouths and began screaming。 They were
both still in their fancy dress察one in a turban察the other in the cap
with the ostrich feather。
And how did ;the certificate of merit; come to be on the bed
beside Katerina Ivanovna拭It lay there by the pillow此Raskolnikov
saw it。
He walked away to the window。 Lebeziatnikov skipped up to him。
;She is dead察─he said。
;Rodion Romanovitch察I must have two words with you察─said
Svidrigailov察coming up to them。
Lebeziatnikov at once made room for him and delicately withdrew。
Svidrigailov drew Raskolnikov further away。
;I will undertake all the arrangements察the funeral and that。 You
know it's a question of money and察as I told you察I have plenty to
spare。 I will put those two little ones and Polenka into some good
orphan asylum察and I will settle fifteen hundred roubles to be paid to
each on coming of age察so that Sofya Semyonovna need have no anxiety
about them。 And I will pull her out of the mud too察for she is a
good girl察isn't she拭So tell Avdotya Romanovna that that is how I
am spending her ten thousand。;
;What is your motive for such benevolence拭─asked Raskolnikov。
;Ah you sceptical person ─laughed Svidrigailov。 ;I told you I
had no need of that money。 Won't you admit that it's simply done
from humanity拭She wasn't 'a louse' you know; he pointed to the
corner where the dead woman lay察 was she察like some old pawnbroker
woman拭Come察you'll agree察is Luzhin to go on living察and doing wicked
things or is she to die拭And if I didn't help them察Polenka would go
the same way。;
He said this with an air of a sort of gay winking slyness察keeping
his eyes fixed on Raskolnikov察who turned white and cold察hearing
his own phrases察spoken to Sonia。 He quickly stepped back and looked
wildly at Svidrigailov。
;How do you know拭─he whispered察hardly able to breathe。
;Why察I lodge here at Madame Resslich's察the other side of the wall。
Here is Kapernaumov察and there lives Madame Resslich察an old and
devoted friend of mine。 I am a neighbour。;
;You拭─
;Yes察─continued Svidrigailov察shaking with laughter。 ;I assure
you on my honour察dear Rodion Romanovitch察that you have interested me
enormously。 I told you we should become friends察I foretold it。
Well察here we have。 And you will see what an accommodating person I
am。 You'll see that you can get on with me ─
PART FIVE
Chapter One
THE MORNING that followed the fateful interview with Dounia and
her mother brought sobering influences to bear on Pyotr Petrovitch。
Intensely unpleasant as it was察he was forced little by little to
accept as a fact beyond recall what had seemed to him only the day
before fantastic and incredible。 The black snake of wounded vanity had
been gnawing at his heart all night。 When he got out of bed察Pyotr
Petrovitch immediately looked in the looking´glass。 He was afraid that
he had jaundice。 However his health seemed unimpaired so far察and
looking at his noble察clear´skinned countenance which had grown
fattish of late察Pyotr Petrovitch for an instant was positively
comforted in the conviction that he would find another bride and察
perhaps察even a better one。 But coming back to the sense of his
present position察he turned aside and spat vigorously察which excited a
sarcastic smile in Andrey Semyonovitch Lebeziatnikov察the young friend
with whom he was staying。 That smile Pyotr Petrovitch noticed察and
at once set it down against his young friend's account。 He had set
down a good many points against him of late。 His anger was redoubled
when he reflected that he ought not to have told Andrey Semyonovitch
about the result of yesterday's interview。 That was the second mistake
he had made in temper察through impulsiveness and irritability。。。。
Moreover察all that morning one unpleasantness followed another。 He
even found a hitch awaiting him in his legal case in the Senate。 He
was particularly irritated by the owner of the flat which had been
taken in view of his approaching marriage and was being redecorated at
his own expense察the owner察a rich German tradesman察would not
entertain the idea of breaking the contract which had just been signed
and insisted on the full forfeit money察though Pyotr Petrovitch
would be giving him back the flat practically redecorated。 In the same
way the upholsterers refused to return a single rouble of the
instalment paid for the furniture purchased but not yet removed to the
flat。
;Am I to get married simply for the sake of the furniture拭─Pyotr
Petrovitch ground his teeth and at the same time once more he had a
gleam of desperate hope。 ;Can all that be really so irrevocably
over拭Is it no use to make another effort拭─The thought of Dounia sent
a voluptuous pang through his heart。 He endured anguish at that
moment察and if it had been possible to slay Raskolnikov instantly by
wishing it察Pyotr Petrovitch would promptly have uttered the wish。
;It was my mistake察too察not to have given them money察─he
thought察as he returned dejectedly to Lebeziatnikov's room察 and why
on earth was I such a Jew拭It was false economy I meant to keep
them without a penny so that they should turn to me as their
providence察and look at them Foo If I'd spent some fifteen hundred
roubles on them for the trousseau and presents察on knick´knacks察
dressing´cases察jewellery察materials察and all that sort of trash
from Knopp's and the English shop察my position would have been
better and。。。 stronger They could not have refused me so easily They
are the sort of people that would feel bound to return money and
presents if they broke it off察and they would find it hard to do it
And their consciences would prick them此how can we dismiss a man who
has hitherto been so generous and delicate拭。。。 H'm I've made a
blunder。;
And grinding his teeth again察Pyotr Petrovitch called himself a
fool´ but not aloud察of course。
He returned home察twice as irritated and angry as before。 The
preparations for the funeral dinner at Katerina Ivanovna's excited his
curiosity as he passed。 He had heard about it the day before察he
fancied察indeed察that he had been invited察but absorbed in his own
cares he had paid no attention。 Inquiring of Madame Lippevechsel who
was busy laying the table while Katerina Ivanovna was away at the
cemetery察he heard that the entertainment was to be a great affair察
that all the lodgers had been invited察among them some who had not
known the dead man察that even Andrey Semyonovitch Lebeziatnikov was
invited in spite of his previous quarrel with Katerina Ivanovna察
that he察Pyotr Petrovitch察was not only invited察but was eagerly
expected as he was the most important of the lodgers。 Amalia
Ivanovna herself had been invited with great ceremony in spite of
the recent unpleasantness察and so she was very busy with
preparations and was taking a positive pleasure in them察she was
moreover dressed up to the nines察all in new black silk察and she was
proud of it。 All this suggested an idea to Pyotr Petrovitch and he
went into his room察or rather Lebeziatnikov's察somewhat thoughtful。 He
had learnt that Raskolnikov was to be one of the guests。
Andrey Semyonovitch had been at home
