e此and these small pellets being a few of them also thrown in as you are angling察will be the better。

And your paste must be thus made此take the flesh of a rabbit察or cat察cut small察and bean´flour察and if that may not be easily got察get other flour察and then察mix these together察and put to them either sugar察or honey察which I think better此and then beat these together in a mortar察or sometimes work them in your hands察your hands being very clean察and then make it into a ball察or two察or three察as you like best察for your use此but you must work or pound it so long in the mortar察as to make it so tough as to hang upon your hook without washing from it察yet not too hard此or察that you may the better keep it on your hook察you may knead with your paste a little察and not too much察white or yellowish wool。

And if you would have this paste keep all the year察for any other fish察then mix with it virgin´wax and clarified honey察and work them together with your hands察before the fire察then make these into balls察and they will keep all the year。

And if you fish for a Carp with gentles察then put upon your hook a small piece of scarlet about this bigness察it being soaked in or anointed with oil of petre察called by some察oil of the rock此and if your gentles be put察two or three days before察into a box or horn anointed with honey察and so put upon your hook as to preserve them to be living察you are as like to kill this crafty fish this way as any other此but still察as you are fishing察chew a little white or brown bread in your mouth察and cast it into the pond about the place where your float swims。 Other baits there be察but these察with diligence and patient watchfulness察will do better than any that I have ever practiced or heard of。 And yet I shall tell you察that the crumbs of white bread and honey made into a paste is a good bait for a Carp察and you know察it is more easily made。 And having said thus much of the Carp察my next discourse shall be of the Bream察which shall not prove so tedious察and therefore I desire the continuance of your attention。

But察first察I will tell you how to make this Carp察that is so curious to be caught察so curious a dish of meat as shall make him worth all your labour and patience。 And though it is not without some trouble and charges察yet it will recompense both。

Take a Carp察alive if possible察scour him察and rub him clean with water and salt察but scale him not此then open him察and put him察with his blood and his liver察which you must save when you open him察into a small pot or kettle此then take sweet marjoram察thyme察and parsley察of each half a handful察a sprig of rosemary察and another of savoury察bind them into two or three small bundles察and put them in your Carp察with four or five whole onions察twenty pickled oysters察and three anchovies。 Then pour upon your Carp as much claret wine as will only cover him察and season your claret well with salt察cloves察and mace察and the rinds of oranges and lemons。 That done察cover your pot and set it on a quick fire till it be sufficiently boiled。 Then take out the Carp察and lay it察with the broth察into the dish察and pour upon it a quarter of a pound of the best fresh butter察melted察and beaten with half a dozen spoonfuls of the broth察the yolks of two or three eggs察and some of the herbs shred此garnish your dish with lemons察and so serve it up。 And much good do you Dr。 T。

The fourth day´continued

On the Bream

Chapter X

Piscator

The Bream察being at a full growth察is a large and stately fish。 He will breed both in rivers and ponds此but loves best to live in ponds察and where察if he likes the water and air察he will grow not only to be very large察but as fat as a hog。 He is by Gesner taken to be more pleasant察or sweet察than wholesome。 This fish is long in growing察but breeds exceedingly in a water that pleases him察yea察in many ponds so fast察as to overstore them察and starve the other fish。

He is very broad察with a forked tail察and his scales set in excellent order察he hath large eyes察and a narrow sucking mouth察he hath two sets of teeth察and a lozenge´like bone察a bone to help his grinding。 The melter is observed to have two large melts察and the female察two large bags of eggs or spawn。

Gesner reports察that in Poland a certain and a great number of large breams were put into a pond察which in the next following winter were frozen up into one entire ice察and not one drop of water remaining察nor one of these fish to be found察though they were diligently searched for察and yet the next spring察when the ice was thawed察and the weather warm察and fresh water got into the pond察he affirms they all appeared again。 This Gesner affirms察and I quote my author察because it seems almost as incredible as the resurrection to an atheist此but it may win something察in point of believing it察to him that considers the breeding or renovation of the silk´worm察and of many insects。 And that is considerable察which Sir Francis Bacon observes in his History of Life and Death察fol。 20察that there be some herbs that die and spring every year察and some endure longer。

But though some do not察yet the French esteem this fish highly察and to that end have this proverb ; He that hath Breams in his pond察is able to bid his friend welcome ;察and it is noted察that the best part of a Bream is his belly and head。

Some say察that Breams and Roaches will mix their eggs and melt together察and so there is in many places a bastard breed of Breams察that never come to be either large or good察but very numerous。

The baits good to catch this Bream are many。 First察paste made of brown bread and honey察gentles察or the brood of wasps that be young察and then not unlike gentles察and should be hardened in an oven察or dried on a tile before the fire to make them tough。 Or察there is察at the root of docks or flags or rushes察in watery places察a worm not unlike a maggot察at which Tench will bite freely。 Or he will bite at a grasshopper with his legs nipt off察in June and July察or at several flies察under water察which may be found on flags that grow near to the water´side。 I doubt not but that there be many other baits that are good察but I will turn them all into this most excellent one察either for a Carp or Bream察in any river or mere此it was given to me by a most honest and excellent angler察and hoping you will prove both察I will impart it to you。

1。 Let your bait be as big a red worm as you can find察without a knot此get a pint or quart of them in an evening察in garden´walks察or chalky commons察after a shower of rain察and put them with clean moss well washed and picked察and the water squeezed out of the moss as dry as you can察into an earthen pot or pipkin set dry察and change the moss fresh every three or four days察for three weeks or a month together察then your bait will be at the best察for it will be clear and lively。

2察Having thus prepared your baits察get your tackling ready and fitted for this sport。 Take three long angling´rods察and as many and more silk察or silk and hair察lines察and as many large swan or goose´quill floats。 Then take a piece of lead察and fasten them to the low ends of your lines此then fasten your link´hook also to the lead察and let there be about a foot or ten inches between the lead and the hook此but be sure the lead be heavy enough to sink the float or quill察a little under the water察and not the quill to bear up the lead察for the lead must lie on the ground。 Note察that your link next the hook may be smaller than the rest of your line察if you dare adventure察for fear of taking the Pike or Perch察who will assuredly visit your hooks察till they be taken out察as I will show you afterwards察before either Carp or Bream will come near to bite。 Note also察that when the worm is well baited察it will crawl up and down as far as the lead will give leave察which much enticeth the fish to bite without suspicion。

3。 Having thus prepared your baits察and fitted your tackling察repair to the river察where you have seen them swim in skulls or shoals。 in the summer´time察in a hot afternoon察about three or four of the clock察and watch their going forth of their deep holes察and returning察which you may well discern察for they return about four of the clock察most of them seeking food at the bottom察yet one or two will lie on the top of the water察rolling and tumbling themselves察whilst the rest are under him at the bottom察and so you shall perceive him to keep sentinel此then mark where he plays most and stays longest察which commonly is in the broadest and deepest place of the river察and there察or near thereabouts察at a clear bottom and a convenient landing´place察take one of your angles ready fitted as aforesaid察and sound the bottom察which should be about eight or ten feet deep察two yards from the bank is best。 Then consider with yourself察whether that water will rise or fall by the next morning察by reason of any water´mills near察and察according to your discretion察take the depth of the place察where you mean after to cast your ground´bait察and to fish察to half an inch察that the lead lying on or near the ground´bait察the top of the float may only appear upright half an inch above the water。

Thus you having found and fitted for the place and depth thereof察then go home and prepare your ground´bait察which is察next to the fruit of your labours察to be regarded。

The GROUND´BAIT。

You shall take a peck察or a peck and a half察according to the greatness of the stream and deepness of the water察where you mean to angle察of sweet gross´ground barley´malt察and boil it in a kettle察one or two warms is enough此then strain it through a bag into a tub察the liquor whereof hath often done my horse much good察and when the bag and malt is near cold察take it down to the water´side察about eight or nine of the clock in the evening察and not before此cast in two parts of your ground´bait察squeezed hard between both your hands察it will sink presently to the bottom察and be sure it may rest in the very place where you mean to angle此if the stream run hard察or move a little察cast your malt in handfuls a little the higher察upwards the stream。 You may察between your hands察close the malt so fast in handfuls察that the water will hardly part it with the fall。

Your ground thus baited察and tackling fitted察leave your bag察
