stooping to raise the weeping penitent察 while every tear from her eye is

CHAPTER VII。
NATURAL SENSE OF PROPRIETY INHERENT IN THE
FEMALE BOSOM。
;I CANNOT think we have done exactly right in going out this
evening察Mademoiselle察─said Charlotte察seating herself when she entered

her apartment此 nay察I am sure it was not right察for I expected to be very
happy察but was sadly disappointed。;
;It was your own fault察then察─replied Mademoiselle此 for I am sure my
cousin omitted nothing that could serve to render the evening agreeable。;
;True察─said Charlotte此 but I thought the gentlemen were very free in
their manner此I wonder you would suffer them to behave as they did。;
;Prithee察don't be such a foolish little prude察─said the artful woman察
affecting anger此 I invited you to go in hopes it would divert you察and be
an agreeable change of scene察however察if your delicacy was hurt by the
behaviour of the gentlemen察you need not go again察so there let it rest。 ;
;I do not intend to go again察─ said Charlotte察 gravely taking off her
bonnet察and beginning to prepare for bed此 I am sure察if Madame Du Pont
knew we had been out to´night察she would be very angry察and it is ten to
one but she hears of it by some means or other。;
;Nay察 Miss察─ said La Rue察 perhaps your mighty sense of propriety
may lead you to tell her yourself此and in order to avoid the censure you
would incur察should she hear of it by accident察throw the blame on me此but
I confess I deserve it此it will be a very kind return for that partiality which
led me to prefer you before any of the rest of the ladies察but perhaps it will
give you pleasure察─continued she察letting fall some hypocritical tears察 to
see me deprived of bread察and for an action which by the most rigid could
only be esteemed an inadvertency察 lose my place and character察 and be
driven again into the world察 where I have already suffered all the evils
attendant on poverty。 ;
This was touching Charlotte in the most vulnerable part此she rose from
her seat察and taking Mademoiselle's hand;You know察my dear La Rue察─
said she察 I love you too well察to do anything that would injure you in my
governess's opinion此I am only sorry we went out this evening。;
;I don't believe it察Charlotte察─said she察assuming a little vivacity察 for
if you had not gone out察you would not have seen the gentleman who met
us crossing the field察 and I rather think you were pleased with his
conversation。;
;I had seen him once before察─replied Charlotte察 and thought him an
agreeable man察and you know one is always pleased to see a person with

whom one has passed several chearful hours。 ;But察─said she pausing察and
drawing the letter from her pocket察while a gentle suffusion of vermillion
tinged her neck and face察 he gave me this letter察what shall I do with it拭─
;Read it察to be sure察─returned Mademoiselle。
;I am afraid I ought not察─said Charlotte此 my mother has often told me察
I should never read a letter given me by a young man察without first giving
it to her。 ;
;Lord bless you察my dear girl察─cried the teacher smiling察 have you a
mind to be in leading strings all your life time。 Prithee open the letter察read
it察and judge for yourself察if you show it your mother察the consequence will
be察you will be taken from school察and a strict guard kept over you察so you
will stand no chance of ever seeing the smart young officer again。;
;I should not like to leave school yet察─replied Charlotte察 till I have
attained a greater proficiency in my Italian and music。 But you can察if you
please察Mademoiselle察 take the letter back to Montraville察 and tell him I
wish him well察 but cannot察 with any propriety察 enter into a clandestine
correspondence with him。; She laid the letter on the table察and began to
undress herself。
;Well察─said La Rue察 I vow you are an unaccountable girl此have you
no curiosity to see the inside now拭for my part I could no more let a letter
addressed to me lie unopened so long察 than I could work miracles此 he
writes a good hand察─ continued she察 turning the letter察 to look at the
superscription。
;'Tis well enough察─said Charlotte察drawing it towards her。
;He is a genteel young fellow察─said La Rue carelessly察folding up her
apron at the same time察 but I think he is marked with the small pox。;
;Oh you are greatly mistaken察─ said Charlotte eagerly察 he has a
remarkable clear skin and fine complexion。;
;His eyes察if I could judge by what I saw察─said La Rue察 are grey and
want expression。;
;By no means察─replied Charlotte察 they are the most expressive eyes I
ever saw。; ;Well察 child察 whether they are grey or black is of no
consequence此you have determined not to read his letter察so it is likely you
will never either see or hear from him again。;
23

Charlotte took up the letter察and Mademoiselle continued
;He is most probably going to America察and if ever you should hear
any account of him察 it may possibly be that he is killed察 and though he
loved you ever so fervently察 though his last breath should be spent in a
prayer for your happiness察it can be nothing to you此you can feel nothing
for the fate of the man察 whose letters you will not open察 and whose
sufferings you will not alleviate察 by permitting him to think you would
remember him when absent察and pray for his safety。;
Charlotte still held the letter in her hand此 her heart swelled at the
conclusion of Mademoiselle's speech察and a tear dropped upon the wafer
that closed it。
;The wafer is not dry yet察─said she察 and sure there can be no great
harm; She hesitated。 La Rue was silent。 ;I may read it察Mademoiselle察
and return it afterwards。;
;Certainly察─replied Mademoiselle。
;At any rate I am determined not to answer it察─continued Charlotte察as
she opened the letter。
Here let me stop to make one remark察 and trust me my very heart
aches while I write it察but certain I am察that when once a woman has stifled
the sense of shame in her own bosom察when once she has lost sight of the
basis on which reputation察honour察every thing that should be dear to the
female heart察rests察she grows hardened in guilt察and will spare no pains to
bring down innocence and beauty to the shocking level with herself此and
this proceeds from that diabolical spirit of envy察which repines at seeing
another in the full possession of that respect and esteem which she can no
longer hope to enjoy。
Mademoiselle eyed the unsuspecting Charlotte察 as she perused the
letter察with a malignant pleasure。 She saw察that the contents had awakened
new emotions in her youthful bosom此she encouraged her hopes察calmed
her fears察and before they parted for the night察it was determined that she
should meet Montraville the ensuing evening。

;I THINK察 my dear察─ said Mrs。 Temple察 laying her hand on her
husband's arm as they were walking together in the garden察 I think next
Wednesday is Charlotte's birth day此now I have formed a little scheme in
my own mind察 to give her an agreeable surprise察 and if you have no
objection察 we will send for her home on that day。; Temple pressed his
wife's hand in token of approbation察and she proceeded。;You know the
little alcove at the bottom of the garden察of which Charlotte is so fond拭I
have an inclination to deck this out in a fanciful manner察and invite all her
little friends to partake of a collation of fruit察sweetmeats察and other things
suitable to the general taste of young guests察and to make it more pleasing
to Charlotte察she shall be mistress of the feast察and entertain her visitors in
this alcove。 I know she will be delighted察and to complete all察they shall
have some music察and finish with a dance。 ;
;A very fine plan察 indeed察─ said Temple察 smiling察 and you really
suppose I will wink at your indulging the girl
