undiminished measure察 clean of any chilly premonitions of the passing
year。 But the constant chorus of the orchards and hedges had shrunk to a
casual evensong from a few yet unwearied performers察 the robin was
beginning to assert himself once more察and there was a feeling in the air of
change and departure。 The cuckoo察 of course察 had long been silent察 but
many another feathered friend察for months a part of the familiar landscape
and its small society察was missing too and it seemed that the ranks thinned
steadily day by day。 Rat察ever observant of all winged movement察saw that
it was taking daily a southing tendency察and even as he lay in bed at night
he thought he could make out察passing in the darkness overhead察the beat
and quiver of impatient pinions察obedient to the peremptory call。
Nature's Grand Hotel has its Season察like the others。 As the guests one
by one pack察 pay察 and depart察 and the seats at the table´d'hote shrink
pitifully at each succeeding meal察 as suites of rooms are closed察 carpets
taken up察 and waiters sent away察 those boarders who are staying on察 en
pension察until the next year's full re´opening察cannot help being somewhat
affected by all these flittings and farewells察this eager discussion of plans察
routes察 and fresh quarters察 this daily shrinkage in the stream of
comradeship。 One gets unsettled察depressed察and inclined to be querulous。
Why this craving for change拭Why not stay on quietly here察like us察and be
jolly拭You don't know this hotel out of the season察and what fun we have
among ourselves察 we fellows who remain and see the whole interesting
year out。 All very true察no doubt the others always reply察we quite envy
youand some other year perhapsbut just now we have engagements

and there's the bus at the doorour time is up So they depart察with a smile
and a nod察 and we miss them察 and feel resentful。 The Rat was a self´
sufficing sort of animal察rooted to the land察and察whoever went察he stayed察
still察he could not help noticing what was in the air察and feeling some of its
influence in his bones。
It was difficult to settle down to anything seriously察 with all this
flitting going on。 Leaving the water´side察where rushes stood thick and tall
in a stream that was becoming sluggish and low察 he wandered country´
wards察 crossed a field or two of pasturage already looking dusty and
parched察 and thrust into the great sea of wheat察 yellow察 wavy察 and
murmurous察 full of quiet motion and small whisperings。 Here he often
loved to wander察through the forest of stiff strong stalks that carried their
own golden sky away over his heada sky that was always dancing察
shimmering察softly talking察or swaying strongly to the passing wind and
recovering itself with a toss and a merry laugh。 Here察 too察he had many
small friends察a society complete in itself察leading full and busy lives察but
always with a spare moment to gossip察and exchange news with a visitor。
Today察 however察 though they were civil enough察 the field´mice and
harvest´mice seemed preoccupied。 Many were digging and tunnelling
busily察 others察 gathered together in small groups察 examined plans and
drawings of small flats察stated to be desirable and compact察and situated
conveniently near the Stores。 Some were hauling out dusty trunks and
dress´baskets察 others were already elbow´deep packing their belongings察
while everywhere piles and bundles of wheat察oats察barley察beech´mast and
nuts察lay about ready for transport。
`Here's old Ratty' they cried as soon as they saw him。 `Come and bear
a hand察Rat察and don't stand about idle'
`What sort of games are you up to' said the Water Rat severely。 `You
know it isn't time to be thinking of winter quarters yet察by a long way'
`O yes察we know that' explained a field´mouse rather shamefacedly察
`but it's always as well to be in good time察isn't it拭We really MUST get all
the furniture and baggage and stores moved out of this before those horrid
machines begin clicking round the fields察 and then察 you know察 the best
flats get picked up so quickly nowadays察and if you're late you have to put

up with ANYTHING察and they want such a lot of doing up察too察 before
they're fit to move into。 Of course察 we're early察we know that察but we're
only just making a start。'
`O察bother STARTS' said the Rat。 `It's a splendid day。 Come for a row察
or a stroll along the hedges察or a picnic in the woods察or something。'
`Well察 I THINK not TO´DAY察 thank you' replied the field´ mouse
hurriedly。 `Perhaps some OTHER daywhen we've more TIME'
The Rat察with a snort of contempt察swung round to go察tripped over a
hat´box察and fell察with undignified remarks。
`If people would be more careful' said a field´mouse rather stiffly察
`and look where they're going察 people wouldn't hurt themselvesand
forget themselves。 Mind that hold´all察 Rat You'd better sit down
somewhere。 In an hour or two we may be more free to attend to you。'
`You won't be ;free; as you call it much this side of Christmas察I can
see that' retorted the Rat grumpily察as he picked his way out of the field。
He returned somewhat despondently to his river againhis faithful察
steady´going old river察which never packed up察flitted察or went into winter
quarters。
In the osiers which fringed the bank he spied a swallow sitting。
Presently it was joined by another察 and then by a third察 and the birds察
fidgeting restlessly on their bough察talked together earnestly and low。
`What察 ALREADY' said the Rat察 strolling up to them。 `What's the
hurry拭I call it simply ridiculous。'
`O察we're not off yet察if that's what you mean' replied the first swallow。
`We're only making plans and arranging things。 Talking it over察you know´
´what route we're taking this year察and where we'll stop察and so on。 That's
half the fun'
`Fun' said the Rat察 now that's just what I don't understand。 If you've
GOT to leave this pleasant place察and your friends who will miss you察and
your snug homes that you've just settled into察why察when the hour strikes
I've no doubt you'll go bravely察and face all the trouble and discomfort and
change and newness察and make believe that you're not very unhappy。 But
to want to talk about it察or even think about it察till you really need'
`No察you don't understand察naturally' said the second swallow。 `First察

we feel it stirring within us察 a sweet unrest察 then back come the
recollections one by one察 like homing pigeons。 They flutter through our
dreams at night察they fly with us in our wheelings and circlings by day。 We
hunger to inquire of each other察to compare notes and assure ourselves that
it was all really true察as one by one the scents and sounds and names of
long´forgotten places come gradually back and beckon to us。'
`Couldn't you stop on for just this year' suggested the Water Rat察
wistfully。 `We'll all do our best to make you feel at home。 You've no idea
what good times we have here察while you are far away。'
`I tried ;stopping on; one year' said the third swallow。 `I had grown so
fond of the place that when the time came I hung back and let the others
go on without me。 For a few weeks it was all well enough察but afterwards察
O the weary length of the nights The shivering察sunless days The air so
clammy and chill察and not an insect in an acre of it No察it was no good察
my courage broke down察and one cold察stormy night I took wing察flying
well inland on account of the strong easterly gales。 It was snowing hard as
I beat through the passes of the great mountains察and I had a stiff fight to
win through察 but never shall I forget the blissful feeling of the hot sun
again on my back as I sped down to the lakes that lay so blue and placid
below me察 and the taste of my first fat insect The past was like a bad
dream察the future was all happy holiday as I moved southwards week by
week察easily察lazily察lingering as long as I dared察but always heeding the
call No察I had had my warning察never again did I think of disobedience。'
`Ah察yes察the call of the South察of the South' twittered the other two
dreamily。 `Its songs its hues察its radiant air O察do you remember' and察
forgetting the Rat察they slid into passionate reminiscence察while he listened
fascinated察and his heart burned within him。 In himself察too察he knew that
it was vibrating at last察that chord hitherto dormant and unsuspected。 The
mere chatter of these southern´bound birds察 their pale and second´hand
reports察had yet power to awaken this wild new sensation and thrill him
through and through with it察 what would one moment of the real thing
work in himo
