`And gas' put in the Badger察in his common way。

`It's for your own good察 Toady' went on the Rat。 `You know you

MUST turn over a new leaf sooner or later察and now seems a splendid time

to begin察 a sort of turning´point in your career。 Please don't think that

saying all this doesn't hurt me more than it hurts you。'

Toad remained a long while plunged in thought。 At last he raised his

head察and the traces of strong emotion were visible on his features。 `You

have conquered察my friends' he said in broken accents。 `It was察to be sure察

but a small thing that I asked merely leave to blossom and expand for yet

one more evening察to let myself go and hear the tumultuous applause that

always seems to mesomehowto bring out my best qualities。 However察

you are right察 I know察 and I am wrong。 Hence forth I will be a very

different Toad。 My friends察you shall never have occasion to blush for me

again。 But察O dear察O dear察this is a hard world'

And察 pressing his handkerchief to his face察 he left the room察 with

faltering footsteps。

`Badger' said the Rat察 _I_ feel like a brute察I wonder what YOU feel

like'

`O察I know察I know' said the Badger gloomily。 `But the thing had to be

done。 This good fellow has got to live here察 and hold his own察 and be

respected。 Would you have him a common laughing´ stock察mocked and

jeered at by stoats and weasels'

`Of course not' said the Rat。 `And察 talking of weasels察 it's lucky we

came upon that little weasel察 just as he was setting out with Toad's

invitations。 I suspected something from what you told me察and had a look

at one or two察they were simply disgraceful。 I confiscated the lot察and the

good Mole is now sitting in the blue boudoir察 filling up plain察 simple

invitation cards。'

At last the hour for the banquet began to draw near察and Toad察who on

leaving the others had retired to his bedroom察 was still sitting there察

melancholy and thoughtful。 His brow resting on his paw察he pondered long

and deeply。 Gradually his countenance cleared察and he began to smile long察

slow smiles。 Then he took to giggling in a shy察self´conscious manner。 At

last he got up察 locked the door察 drew the curtains across the windows察

collected all the chairs in the room and arranged them in a semicircle察and

took up his position in front of them察 swelling visibly。 Then he bowed察

coughed twice察and察letting himself go察with uplifted voice he sang察to the

enraptured audience that his imagination so clearly saw察

     TOAD'S LAST LITTLE SONG

The Toadcamehome There was panic in the parlours and bowling

in the halls察There was crying in the cow´sheds and shrieking in the stalls察

When the Toadcamehome

When the Toadcamehome There was smashing in of window and

crashing in of door察There was chivvying of weasels that fainted on the

floor察When the Toadcamehome

Bang go the drums The trumpeters are tooting and the soldiers are

saluting察And the cannon they are shooting and the motor´cars are hooting察

As theHerocomes

ShoutHoo´ray And let each one of the crowd try and shout it very

loud察In honour of an animal of whom you're justly proud察For it's Toad's

greatday

He sang this very loud察with great unction and expression察and when

he had done察he sang it all over again。

Then he heaved a deep sigh察a long察long察long sigh。

Then he dipped his hairbrush in the water´jug察 parted his hair in the

middle察and plastered it down very straight and sleek on each side of his

face察 and察 unlocking the door察 went quietly down the stairs to greet his

guests察who he knew must be assembling in the drawing´room。

All the animals cheered when he entered察 and crowded round to

congratulate him and say nice things about his courage察and his cleverness察

and his fighting qualities察 but Toad only smiled faintly察 and murmured察

`Not at all' Or察sometimes察for a change察 On the contrary' Otter察who was

standing on the hearthrug察 describing to an admiring circle of friends

exactly how he would have managed things had he been there察 came

forward with a shout察threw his arm round Toad's neck察and tried to take

him round the room in triumphal progress察but Toad察in a mild way察was

rather snubby to him察 remarking gently察 as he disengaged himself察

`Badger's was the mastermind察the Mole and the Water Rat bore the brunt

of the fighting察I merely served in the ranks and did little or nothing。' The

animals were evidently puzzled and taken aback by this unexpected

attitude of his察 and Toad felt察 as he moved from one guest to the other察

making his modest responses察that he was an object of absorbing interest

to every one。

The Badger had ordered everything of the best察and the banquet was a

great success。 There was much talking and laughter and chaff among the

animals察but through it all Toad察who of course was in the chair察 looked

down his nose and murmured pleasant nothings to the animals on either

side of him。 At intervals he stole a glance at the Badger and the Rat察and

always when he looked they were staring at each other with their mouths

open察and this gave him the greatest satisfaction。 Some of the younger and

livelier animals察as the evening wore on察got whispering to each other that

things were not so amusing as they used to be in the good old days察and

there were some knockings on the table and cries of `Toad Speech

Speech from Toad Song Mr。 Toad's song' But Toad only shook his head

gently察raised one paw in mild protest察and察by pressing delicacies on his

guests察 by topical small´talk察 and by earnest inquiries after members of

their families not yet old enough to appear at social functions察managed to

convey to them that this dinner was being run on strictly conventional

lines。

He was indeed an altered Toad

       * * * * *

After this climax察 the four animals continued to lead their lives察 so

rudely broken in upon by civil war察 in great joy and contentment察

undisturbed by further risings or invasions。 Toad察 after due consultation

with his friends察selected a handsome gold chain and locket set with pearls察

which he dispatched to the gaoler's daughter with a letter that even the

Badger admitted to be modest察grateful察and appreciative察and the engine´

driver察in his turn察was properly thanked and compensated for all his pains

and trouble。 Under severe compulsion from the Badger察 even the barge´

woman was察 with some trouble察 sought out and the value of her horse

discreetly made good to her察though Toad kicked terribly at this察holding

himself to be an instrument of Fate察sent to punish fat women with mottled

arms who couldn't tell a real gentleman when they saw one。 The amount

involved察 it was true察 was not very burdensome察 the gipsy's valuation

being admitted by local assessors to be approximately correct。

Sometimes察in the course of long summer evenings察the friends would

take a stroll together in the Wild Wood察now successfully tamed so far as

they were concerned察 and it was pleasing to see how respectfully they

were greeted by the inhabitants察and how the mother´weasels would bring

their young ones to the mouths of their holes察 and say察 pointing察 Look察

baby There goes the great Mr。 Toad And that's the gallant Water Rat察a

terrible fighter察walking along o' him And yonder comes the famous Mr。

Mole察of whom you so often have heard your father tell' But when their

infants were fractious and quite beyond control察they would quiet them by

telling how察if they didn't hush them and not fret them察the terrible grey

Badger would up and get them。 This was a base libel on Badger察 who察

though he cared little about Society察 was rather fond of children察 but it

never failed to have its full effect。
