and science isn't what they need察it's a home察a house of their own察that no one can take away from them。
It was the right time察almost the only time察for reading a book。 You could give it your full attention察you could lose yourself in it。 You bee one with it for awhile察selfless。
In the library察it took her some time to make a definitive selection。 She did a considerable amount of leaf´fluttering along the shelves察made two false starts back to the chair for an opening paragraph or two察before she'd finally settled on something that gave an indication of suiting her。
Marie Antoinette察by Katharine Anthony。
She'd never cared much for fiction察somehow。 Something about it made her slightly unfortable察perhaps a reminder of the drama in her own life。 She liked things her mind expressed it that had really happened。 Really happened察but long ago and far away察to someone entirely else察someone that never could be confused with herself。 In the case of a fictional character察you soon察involuntarily察began identifying yourself with him or her。 In the case of a character who had once been an actual living personage察you did not You sympathized objectively察but it ended there。 It was always察from first to last察someone else。 Because it had once察in reality察been someone else。 Escape察they would have called this察though in her case it was the reverse of what it was for others。 They escaped from humdrum reality into fictional drama。 She escaped from too much personal drama into a reality of the past。
For an hour察maybe more察she was one with a woman dead a hundred and fifty years察she lost track of time。
Dimly察with only a marginal part of her faculties察she heard brakes go on somewhere outside in the quiet night。
;。 。 。 Axel Fersen drove swiftly through the dark streets。; They're back。 I'll finish this chapter first。 ;An hour and a half later察the coach passed through the gate of Saint´Martin。 。 。;
A key turned in the front door。 It opened察then it closed。 But no murmur of homeing voices eddied in。 Vocal silence察if not the total kind。 Firm察energetic footsteps察a single pair察struck across the preliminary gap of bare flooring adjacent to the door察then blurred off along the ball carpeting。
;。 。 。 A little way beyond察they saw a large travelling´carriage drawn up at the side of the road。; No察that's Bill察not they。 He's the one just came in。 I forgot察they didn't take the car with them察the Michaelsons live just around the corner ;a large travelling´carriage drawn up at the side of the road 。 。 。;
The tread went to the back。 Aunt Josie 's pantry´light flashed on again。 She couldn't have seen it from where she was察but she knew it by the click of its switch。 She knew all the lights by the clicks of their switches。 The direction from which the click came察and its sharpness or faintness of tone。 You can learn those things about a house。
She heard water surge from a tap察and then an emptied glass go down。 Then the lid of the cookie´jar went down察with its heavy察hollowed察ringing察porcelain thud。 It stayed down for some time察too察was in no hurry to go back on again。
;。 。 。 drawn up at the side of the road。; Aunt Josie'll have a fit She always scolds him。 She never scolds me察for doing the very same thing。 I guess she used to when he was a boy察and can't get over the habit ;The pseudo Madame Korff and her party entered the carriage。 。 。;
The lid went back on again at long last。 The footsteps started forward again察emerged into the back of the hall。 They stopped short察backed up a step察the floor creaked slightly with doubled weight in one place。
;。 。 。; He dropped a chunk on the floor察stopped to pick it up。 Doesn't want her to see it lying there in the morning察and know what he's been up to。 I bet he's still afraid of Aunt Josie in his heart察in a little´boy way。 ; 。 。 。;
But her thoughts were not consciously of him or on him。 They were on her book。 It was the perimeter of her mind察the unused residue察that kept up a running mentary to itself察and which the center of her attention paid no heed to。
He subsided for awhile察was lost to awareness。 Must have been slumped somewhere察finishing his cookies。 Probably with a leg thrown over a chair´arm察if he was in a chair at all。
He had known they were going over to the Michaelsons察and must have thought she had gone with them察that he was alone in the house。 The library was to the right of the stairs察and he had taken the left channel察to the pantry and return察hadn't e near here as yet察so he couldn't have known that she was in here。 The shaded lamp she was beside had a limited radius of reflection that did not reach past the room´doorway。
Suddenly his lithe footfalls were underway again察had remenced察the nibbling interlude at an end。 They struck out into the hail again察clarifying as they emerged from wherever it was he had been察rounded the bottom of the stairs察and turned in on this side。 They were ing straight toward here察toward this room she was unsuspectedly in。
She went ahead steadily reading察trapped by the mounting interest of the passage she had just entered upon察held fast。 Didn't even raise her eyes。
His tread reached the threshold。 Then it stopped short there察almost with a recoil。
For perhaps a moment he stood stock´still察looking at her。
Then察abruptly察he took an awkward step in retreat察a full step to the rear察turned察went away again。
It was almost subconsciously that she knew all this察not in full consciousness察at least not as yet。 It was there察clinging to her awareness察but it hadn't penetrated it as yet。
;。 。 。; Why did he turn and go away like that察when he saw me in here alone殖 ;。 。 。 and disposed themselves upon the fortable cushions。 。 。 。; He intended ing in here。 He did e as far as the door。 Then when he saw that I was in here察and didn't seem to have seen him yet察he backed away。 Why拭Why was that殖 ;Axel Fersen took the reins。。。。;
Slowly the spell of the book unravelled察disintegrated。 Her eyes left its pages for the first time。 She raised her head questioningly察still holding the book open before her。
Why拭Why did he do that
It isn't that he was afraid of disturbing me。 We're all one family察we don't stand on ceremony like that with one another。 We all go from room to room as we like without a by´your´leave察except in the upstairs´rooms察and this isn't upstairs察this is down here。 He didn't even say hello。 When he saw that I didn't see him察he wanted it left that way察did his best to keep it that way察tried not to attract my attention。 Withdrew backward the first step察and only then turned around。
The front door had reopened察but without closing behind him。 He'd gone out front for a moment察to put the car away。 She heard the thump of its door as he shut it on himself察heard its gears mesh into motion。
Doesn't he like me拭Is that why he doesn't want to find himself alone in a room with me察when no one else is here拭Is he holding something against me拭I thought´it seemed´as if his full confidence had been given to me long ago察but´To balk like that察curb himself察almost swerve away察at the very threshold。
And then suddenly察quite simply察almost matter´of´factly察she knew。 It came to her。 Some indefinable something had told her。 Something that no word could explain。 Something too tenuous to bear the weight of any words。
No察it's not because he doesn't like me。 It's because he does like me察does like me察that he backed away like that察doesn't want to be in the room alone with me if he can avoid it。 Likes me too well。 Is already beginning to fall in love with me。 And´and thinks he shouldn't。 Is fighting it。 That hopeless察last´ditch fight that's never won。
Determinedly察but quite unhurriedly察she closed her book察carried it over to the gap from which she'd extracted it察pushed it in。 She left the lamp on for him since he had seemed to want to e in here察but quitted the room herself察left it to him察went out into the hall察went up the stairs and into her own room察closed the door of that for the night。
She undid her hair察brushed it for retiring。
She heard the rumble of the garage´doors察heard the padlock strike against them as he let it fall back to rest察heard him e into the house again。 He went straight back toward the library察and went in察this time unhesitatingly to accost her now察to face it察to bring it out察his decision taken during those few minutes' breathing spell殖´to find it empty。 The lamp on察the reader gone。
Seconds later she remembered that she'd left her cigarette burning there察on the table察under the lamp察beside where she'd been sitting。 Had forgotten to pick it up when she came out。 It must be burning still察she'd only just lit it before she'd first heard the car drive up outside。
It wasn't that she was alarmed about possible damage。 He'd see it at a glance察and put it out for her。
But it would tell him。 For察just as he had intended ing in when he hadn't察it would reveal to him that she hadn't intended getting up and leaving when she had。
She not only knew察now察that he was beginning to love her察but察by token of that telltale cigarette察he knew that she knew。

In the light of the full´bodied moon the flower´garden at the back of the house was as bright as noon when she stepped out into it。 The sanded paths that ran around it foursquare察and through it like an X察gleamed like snow察and her shadow glided along them azure against their whiteness。 The little rock´pool in the center was polkadotted with silver disks察and the wafers coalesced and separated again as if in motion察though they weren't察as her point of perspective continually shifted with her rotary stroll。
The perfume of the rose´bushes was heavy on the June night察and sleepy little insects made a somnolent humming noise察as though they were talking in their sleep。
She hadn't wanted to sleep yet察and she hadn't wanted to read察it was too close in the library with the lamp on。 She hadn't wanted to sit alone on the front porch any longer察once Mother and Father Hazzard had left her and gone up to their room。 She'd gone up a moment and looked in at Hughie察to see if he was all right察and then she'd e out here。 To the flower´garden in the back察safely
