bones here on our soil察by the side of our slain brother's bones拭so that察
while one skeleton shall remain as the everlasting monument of our
sorrow察the other shall endure as long察exhibiting to the whole human race
a terrible example of Pygmy vengeance Such is the question。 I put it to
you in full confidence of a response that shall be worthy of our national
character察and calculated to increase察rather than diminish察the glory which
our ancestors have transmitted to us察and which we ourselves have proudly
vindicated in our warfare with the cranes。;
The orator was here interrupted by a burst of irrepressible enthusiasm察
every individual Pygmy crying out that the national honor must be
preserved at all hazards。 He bowed察 and察 making a gesture for silence察
wound up his harangue in the following admirable manner此
;It only remains for us察then察to decide whether we shall carry on the
war in our national capacityone united people against a common enemy´
´or whether some champion察famous in former fights察shall be selected to
defy the slayer of our brother Antaeus to single combat。 In the latter case察
though not unconscious that there may be taller men among you察I hereby
offer myself for that enviable duty。 And believe me察 dear countrymen察
whether I live or die察 the honor of this great country察 and the fame
bequeathed us by our heroic progenitors察shall suffer no diminution in my
hands。 Never察while I can wield this sword察of which I now fling away the
scabbardnever察never察never察even if the crimson hand that slew the great
Antaeus shall lay me prostrate察like him察on the soil which I give my life to

defend。;
So saying察this valiant Pygmy drew out his weapon which was terrible
to behold察being as long as the blade of a penknife察and sent the scabbard
whirling over the heads of the multitude。 His speech was followed by an
uproar of applause察 as its patriotism and self´devotion unquestionably
deserved察and the shouts and clapping of hands would have been greatly
prolonged察 had they not been rendered quite inaudible by a deep
respiration察vulgarly called a snore察from the sleeping Hercules。
It was finally decided that the whole nation of Pygmies should set to
work to destroy Hercules察 not察 be it understood察 from any doubt that a
single champion would be capable of putting him to the sword察 but
because he was a public enemy察 and all were desirous of sharing in the
glory of his defeat。 There was a debate whether the national honor did not
demand that a herald should be sent with a trumpet察to stand over the ear
of Hercules察 and after blowing a blast right into it察 to defy him to the
combat by formal proclamation。 But two or three venerable and sagacious
Pygmies察 well versed in state affairs察 gave it as their opinion that war
already existed察and that it was their rightful privilege to take the enemy
by surprise。 Moreover察 if awakened察 and allowed to get upon his feet察
Hercules might happen to do them a mischief before he could be beaten
down again。 For察 as these sage counselors remarked察 the stranger's club
was really very big察and had rattled like a thunderbolt against the skull of
Antaeus。 So the Pygmies resolved to set aside all foolish punctilios察and
assail their antagonist at once。
Accordingly察all the fighting men of the nation took their weapons察and
went boldly up to Hercules察who still lay fast asleep察little dreaming of the
harm which the Pygmies meant to do him。 A body of twenty thousand
archers marched in front察with their little bows all ready察and the arrows on
the string。 The same number were ordered to clamber upon Hercules察
some with spades to dig his eyes out察and others with bundles of hay察and
all manner of rubbish with which they intended to plug up his mouth and
nostrils察so that he might perish for lack of breath。 These last察 however察
could by no means perform their appointed duty察inasmuch as the enemy's
breath rushed out of his nose in an obstreperous hurricane and whirlwind察

which blew the Pygmies away as fast as they came nigh。 It was found
necessary察 therefore察 to hit upon some other method of carrying on the
war。
After holding a council察 the captains ordered their troops to collect
sticks察straws察dry weeds察and whatever combustible stuff they could find察
and make a pile of it察heaping it high around the head of Hercules。 As a
great many thousand Pygmies were employed in this task察 they soon
brought together several bushels of inflammatory matter察and raised so tall
a heap察that察mounting on its summit察they were quite upon a level with the
sleeper's face。 The archers察 meanwhile察 were stationed within bow shot察
with orders to let fly at Hercules the instant that he stirred。 Everything
being in readiness察 a torch was applied to the pile察 which immediately
burst into flames察and soon waxed hot enough to roast the enemy察had he
but chosen to lie still。 A Pygmy察you know察though so very small察might set
the world on fire察just as easily as a Giant could察so that this was certainly
the very best way of dealing with their foe察provided they could have kept
him quiet while the conflagration was going forward。
But no sooner did Hercules begin to be scorched察than up he started察
with his hair in a red blaze。
;What's all this拭─ he cried察 bewildered with sleep察 and staring about
him as if he expected to see another Giant。
At that moment the twenty thousand archers twanged their bowstrings察
and the arrows came whizzing察like so many winged mosquitoes察right into
the face of Hercules。 But I doubt whether more than half a dozen of them
punctured the skin察which was remarkably tough察as you know the skin of
a hero has good need to be。
;Villain ─shouted all the Pygmies at once。 ;You have killed the Giant
Antaeus察our great brother察and the ally of our nation。 We declare bloody
war against you察and will slay you on the spot。;
Surprised at the shrill piping of so many little voices察Hercules察after
putting out the conflagration of his hair察gazed all round about察but could
see nothing。 At last察however察looking narrowly on the ground察he espied
the innumerable assemblage of Pygmies at his feet。 He stooped down察and
taking up the nearest one between his thumb and finger察 set him on the

palm of his left hand察and held him at a proper distance for examination。 It
chanced to be the very identical Pygmy who had spoken from the top of
the toadstool察and had offered himself as a champion to meet Hercules in
single combat。
;What in the world察my little fellow察─ejaculated Hercules察 may you
be拭─
;I am your enemy察─ answered the valiant Pygmy察 in his mightiest
squeak。 ;You have slain the enormous Antaeus察 our brother by the
mother's side察and for ages the faithful ally of our illustrious nation。 We are
determined to put you to death察and for my own part察I challenge you to
instant battle察on equal ground。;
Hercules was so tickled with the Pygmy's big words and warlike
gestures察 that he burst into a great explosion of laughter察 and almost
dropped the poor little mite of a creature off the palm of his hand察through
the ecstasy and convulsion of his merriment。
;Upon my word察─cried he察 I thought I had seen wonders before to´
dayhydras with nine heads察 stags with golden horns察 six´legged men察
three´headed dogs察 giants with furnaces in their stomachs察 and nobody
knows what besides。 But here察on the palm of my hand察stands a wonder
that outdoes them all Your body察my little friend察is about the size of an
ordinary man's finger。 Pray察how big may your soul be拭─
;As big as your own ─said the Pygmy。
Hercules was touched with the little man's dauntless courage察 and
could not help acknowledging such a brotherhood with him as one hero
feels for another。
;My good little people察─said he察making a low obeisance to the grand
nation察 not for all the world would I do an intentional injury to such brave
fellows as you Your hearts seem to me so exceedingly great察that察upon
my honor察 I marvel how your small bodies can contain them。 I sue for
peace察and察as a condition of it察will take five strides察and be out of your
kingdom at the sixth。 Good´bye。 I shall pick my steps carefully察for fear of
treading upon some fifty of you察without knowing it。 Ha察ha察ha Ho察ho察
ho For once察Hercules acknowledges himself vanquished。;
Some writers say察that Hercules gathered up the whole race of Pygmies

in his lion's skin察 and carried them home to Greece察 for the children
