lesson that lies nearest to us。 After all察it is more to my old mind察and
perhaps to your young mind too察 to look at things which are young and
fresh and living察rather than things which are old and worn and dead。 Let
us leave the old stones察and the old bones察and the old shells察the wrecks of
ancient worlds which have gone down into the kingdom of death察to teach
us their grand lessons some other day察and let us look now at the world of
light and life and beauty察which begins here at the open door察and stretches
away over the hay´fields察over the woods察over the southern moors察over
sunny France察 and sunnier Spain察 and over the tropic seas察 down to the
equator察 and the palm´groves of the eternal summer。 If we cannot find
something察even at starting from the open door察to teach us about Why and
How察we must be very short´sighted察or very shallow´hearted。
There is the old cock starling screeching in the eaves察 because he
wants to frighten us away察and take a worm to his children察without our
finding out whereabouts his hole is。 How does he know that we might
hurt him拭and how again does he not know that we shall not hurt him拭we察
who for five´and´twenty years have let him and his ancestors build under
those eaves in peace拭 How did he get that quantity of half´wit察that sort
of stupid cunning察into his little brain察 and yet get no more拭 And why
for this is a question of Why察and not of How does he labour all day long察
hunting for worms and insects for his children察while his wife nurses them
117

in the nest拭 Why察too察did he help her to build that nest with toil and care
this spring察for the sake of a set of nestlings who can be of no gain or use
to him察 but only take the food out of his mouth拭Simply out ofwhat
shall I call it察my childLove察that same sense of love and duty察coming
surely from that one Fountain of all duty and all love察which makes your
father work for you。 That the mother should take care of her young察is
wonderful enough察but that at least among many birds the father should
help likewise察is as you will find out as you grow older more wonderful
far。 So there already the old starling has set us two fresh puzzles about
How and Why察neither of which we shall get answered察at least on this side
of the grave。
Come on察up the field察under the great generous sun察who quarrels with
no one察 grudges no one察 but shines alike upon the evil and the good。
What a gay picture he is painting now察with his light´ pencils察for in them察
remember察 and not in the things themselves the colour lies。 See how察
where the hay has been already carried察 he floods all the slopes with
yellow light察 making them stand out sharp against the black shadows of
the wood察while where the grass is standing still察he makes the sheets of
sorrel´flower blush rosy red察or dapples the field with white oxeyes。
But is not the sorrel itself red察and the oxeyes white拭
What colour are they at night察when the sun is gone拭
Dark。
That is察no colour。 The very grass is not green at night。
Oh察but it is if you look at it with a lantern。
No察 no。 It is the light of the lantern察 which happens to be strong
enough to make the leaves look green察though it is not strong enough to
make a geranium look red。
Not red拭
No察 the geranium flowers by a lantern look black察 while the leaves
look green。 If you don't believe me察we will try。
But why is that拭
Why察I cannot tell此 and how察you had best ask Professor Tyndall察if
you ever have the honour of meeting him。
But nowhark to the mowing´machine察 humming like a giant night´
118
´ Page 119´

jar。 Come up and look at it察and see how swift and smooth it shears the
long grass down察 so that in the middle of the swathe it seems to have
merely fallen flat察and you must move it before you find that it has been
cut off。
Ah察there is a proof to us of what men may do if they will only learn
the lessons which Madam How can teach them。 There is that boy察fresh
from the National School察 cutting more grass in a day than six strong
mowers could have cut察and cutting it better察too察for the mowing´machine
goes so much nearer to the ground than the scythe察that we gain by it two
hundredweight of hay on every acre。 And see察 too察 how persevering old
Madam How will not stop her work察though the machine has cut off all the
grass which she has been making for the last three months察for as fast as
we shear it off察she makes it grow again。 There are fresh blades察here at
our feet察a full inch long察which have sprung up in the last two days察for
the cattle when they are turned in next week。
But if the machine cuts all the grass察 the poor mowers will have
nothing to do。
Not so。 They are all busy enough elsewhere。 There is plenty of
other work to be done察thank God察and wholesomer and easier work than
mowing with a burning sun on their backs察drinking gallons of beer察and
getting first hot and then cold across the loins察till they lay in a store of
lumbago and sciatica察 to cripple them in their old age。 You delight in
machinery because it is curious此you should delight in it besides because it
does good察and nothing but good察where it is used察according to the laws of
Lady Why察with care察moderation察and mercy察and fair´play between man
and man。 For example此 just as the mowing´machine saves the mowers察
the threshing´machine saves the threshers from rheumatism and chest
complaintswhich they used to catch in the draught and dust of the
unhealthiest place in the whole parish察which is察the old´fashioned barn's
floor。 And so察we may hope察in future years all heavy drudgery and dirty
work will be done more and more by machines察and people will have more
and more chance of keeping themselves clean and healthy察and more and
more time to read察 and learn察 and think察 and be true civilised men and
women察instead of being mere live ploughs察or live manure´carts察such as I

have seen ere now。
A live manure´cart拭
Yes察 child。 If you had seen察 as I have seen察 in foreign lands察 poor
women察haggard察dirty察grown old before their youth was over察toiling up
hill with baskets of foul manure upon their backs察you would have said察as
I have said察 Oh for Madam How to cure that ignorance Oh for Lady
Why to cure that barbarism Oh that Madam How would teach them that
machinery must always be cheaper in the long run than human muscles
and nerves Oh that Lady Why would teach them that a woman is the
most precious thing on earth察 and that if she be turned into a beast of
burden察 Lady Whyand Madam How likewisewill surely avenge the
wrongs of their human sister ─ There察 you do not quite know what I
mean察and I do not care that you should。 It is good for little folk that big
folk should now and then ;talk over their heads察─ as the saying is察 and
make them feel how ignorant they are察and how many solemn and earnest
questions there are in the world on which they must make up their minds
some day察though not yet。 But now we will talk about the hay此 or rather
do you and the rest go and play in the hay and gather it up察build forts of it察
storm them察 pull them down察 build them up again察 shout察 laugh察 and
scream till you are hot and tired。 You will please Madam How thereby察
and Lady Why likewise。
How拭
Because Madam How naturally wants her work to succeed察and she is
at work now making you。
Making me拭
Of course。 Making a man of you察out of a boy。 And that can only
be done by the life´blood which runs through and through you。 And the
more you laugh and shout察the more pure air will pass into your blood察and
make it red and healthy察 and the more you romp and playunless you
overtire yourselfthe quicker will that blood flow through all your limbs察
to make bone and muscle察and help you to grow into a man。
But why does Lady Why like to see us play拭
She likes to see you happy察as she likes to see the trees and birds happy。
For she knows well that there is no food察 nor medicine either察 like

happiness。 If people are not happy enough察they are often tempted to do
many wrong deeds察and to think many wrong thoughts此 and if by God's
grace they know the laws of Lady Why察 and keep from sin察 still
unhappiness察if it goes on too long察wears them out察body and mind察and
they grow ill and die察of broken hearts察and brok
