ot permit them to use force察the great men of the Jews察with John the publican察being in the utmost distress what to do察persuaded Florus察with the offer of eight talents察to hinder the work。 He then察being intent upon nothing but getting money察promised he would do for them all they desired of him察and then went away from Cesarea to Sebaste察and left the sedition to take its full course察as if he had sold a license to the Jews to fight it out。

5。 Now on the next day察which was the seventh day of the week察when the Jews were crowding apace to their synagogue察a certain man of Cesarea察of a seditious temper察got an earthen vessel察and set it with the bottom upward察at the entrance of that synagogue察and sacrificed birds。 This thing provoked the Jews to an incurable degree察because their laws were affronted察and the place was polluted。 Whereupon the sober and moderate part of the Jews thought it proper to have recourse to their governors again察while the seditious part察and such as were in the fervor of their youth察were vehemently inflamed to fight。 The seditions also among the Gentiles of Cesarea stood ready for the same purpose察for they had察by agreement察sent the man to sacrifice beforehand as ready to support him撮Аso that it soon came to blows。 Hereupon Jucundus察the master of the horse察who was ordered to prevent the fight察came thither察and took away the earthen vessel察and endeavored to put a stop to the sedition察but when 20 he was overcome by the violence of the people of Cesarea察the Jews caught up their books of the law察and retired to Narbata察which was a place to them belonging察distant from Cesarea sixty furlongs。 But John察and twelve of the principal men with him察went to Florus察to Sebaste察and made a lamentable complaint of their case察and besought him to help them察and with all possible decency察put him in mind of the eight talents they had given him察but he had the men seized upon察and put in prison察and accused them for carrying the books of the law out of Cesarea。

6。 Moreover察as to the citizens of Jerusalem察although they took this matter very ill察yet did they restrain their passion察but Florus acted herein as if he had been hired察and blew up the war into a flame察and sent some to take seventeen talents out of the sacred treasure察and pretended that Caesar wanted them。 At this the people were in confusion immediately察and ran together to the temple察with prodigious clamors察and called upon Caesar by name察and besought him to free them from the tyranny of Florus。 Some also of the seditious cried out upon Florus察and cast the greatest reproaches upon him察and carried a basket about察and begged some spills of money for him察as for one that was destitute of possessions察and in a miserable condition。 Yet was not he made ashamed hereby of his love of money察but was more enraged察and provoked to get still more察and instead of coming to Cesarea察as he ought to have done察and quenching the flame of war察which was beginning thence察and so taking away the occasion of any disturbances察on which account it was that he had received a reward of eight talentsВ察he marched hastily with an army of horsemen and footmen against Jerusalem察that he might gain his will by the arms of the Romans察and might察by his terror察and by his threatenings察bring the city into subjection。

7。 But the people were desirous of making Florus ashamed of his attempt察and met his soldiers with acclamations察and put themselves in order to receive him very submissively。 But he sent Capito察a centurion察beforehand察with fifty soldiers察to bid them go back察and not now make a show of receiving him in an obliging manner察whom they had so foully reproached before察and said that it was incumbent on them察in case they had generous souls察and were free speakers察to jest upon him to his face察and appear to be lovers of liberty察not only in words察but with their weapons also。 With this message was the multitude amazed察and upon the coming of Capito's horsemen into the midst of them察they were dispersed before they could salute Florus察or manifest their submissive behavior to him。 Accordingly察they retired to their own houses察and spent that night in fear and confusion of face。 8。 Now at this time Florus took up his quarters at the palace察and on the next day he had his tribunal set before it察and sat upon it察when the high priests察and the men of power察and those of the greatest eminence in the city察came all before that tribunal察upon which Florus commanded them to deliver up to him those that had reproached him察and told them that they should themselves partake of the vengeance to them belonging察if they did not produce the criminals察but these demonstrated that the people were peaceably disposed察and they begged forgiveness for those that had spoken amiss察for that it was no wonder at all that in so great a multitude there should be some more daring than they ought to be察and察by reason of their younger age察foolish also察and that it was impossible to distinguish those that offended from the rest察while every one was sorry for what he had done察and denied it out of fear of what would follow此that he ought察however察to provide for the peace of the nation察and to take such counsels as might preserve the city for the Romans察and rather for the sake of a great number of innocent people to forgive a few that were guilty察than for the sake of a few of the wicked to put so large and good a body of men into disorder。 9。 Florus was more provoked at this察and called out aloud to the soldiers to plunder that which was called the Upper Market´place察and to slay such as they met with。 So the soldiers察taking this exhortation of their commander in a sense agreeable to their desire of gain察did not only plunder the place they were sent to察but forcing themselves into every house察they slew its inhabitants察so the citizens fled along the narrow lanes察and the soldiers slew those that they caught察and no method of plunder was omitted察they also caught many of the quiet people察and brought them before Florus察whom he first chastised with stripes察and then crucified。 Accordingly察the whole number of those that were destroyed that day察with their wives and children察。for they did not spare even the infants themselves撮 was about three thousand and six hundred。 And what made this calamity the heavier was this new method of Roman barbarity察for Florus ventured then to do what no one had done before察that is察to have men of the equestrian order whipped 21 and nailed to the cross before his tribunal察who察although they were by birth Jews察yet were they of Roman dignity notwithstanding。

CHAPTER 15。

Concerning Bernice's Petition To Florus察To Spare The Jews察But In Vain察As Also How察After The Seditious Flame Was Quenched察It Was Kindled Again By Florus。

1。 About this very time king Agrippa was going to Alexandria察to congratulate Alexander upon his having obtained the government of Egypt from Nero察but as his sister Bernice was come to Jerusalem察and saw the wicked practices of the soldiers察she was sorely affected at it察and frequently sent the masters of her horse and her guards to Florus察and begged of him to leave off these slaughters察but he would not comply with her request察nor have any regard either to the multitude of those already slain察or to the nobility of her that interceded察but only to the advantage he should make by this plundering察nay察this violence of the soldiers brake out to such a degree of madness察that it spent itself on the queen herself察for they did not only torment and destroy those whom they had caught under her very eyes察but indeed had killed herself also察unless she had prevented them by flying to the palace察and had staid there all night with her guards察which she had about her for fear of an insult from the soldiers。 Now she dwelt then at Jerusalem察in order to perform a vow 22 which she had made to God察for it is usual with those that had been either afflicted with a distemper察or with any other distresses察to make vows察and for thirty days before they are to offer their sacrifices察to abstain from wine察and to shave the hair of their head。 Which things Bernice was now performing察and stood barefoot before Florus's tribunal察and besought him to spare the JewsА Yet could she neither have any reverence paid to her察nor could she escape without some danger of being slain herself。

2。 This happened upon the sixteenth day of the month Artemisius JyarА Now察on the next day察the multitude察who were in a great agony察ran together to the Upper Market´place察and made the loudest lamentations for those that had perished察and the greatest part of the cries were such as reflected on Florus察at which the men of power were aftrighted察together with the high priests察and rent their garments察and fell down before each of them察and besought them to leave off察and not to provoke Florus to some incurable procedure察besides what they had already suffered。 Accordingly察the multitude complied immediately察out of reverence to those that had desired it of them察and out of the hope they had that Florus would do them no more injuries。

3。 So Florus was troubled that the disturbances were over察and endeavored to kindle that flame again察and sent for the high priests察with the other eminent persons察and said the only demonstration that the people would not make any other innovations should be this察that they must go out and meet the soldiers that were ascending from Cesarea察whence two cohorts were coming察and while these men were exhorting the multitude so to do察he sent beforehand察and gave directions to the centurions of the cohorts察that they should give notice to those that were under them not to return the Jews' salutations察and that if they made any reply to his disadvantage察they should make use of their weapons。 Now the high priests assembled the multitude in the temple察and desired them to go and meet the Romans察and to salute the cohorts very civilly察before their miserable case should become incurable。 Now the seditious part would not comply with these persuasions察but the consideration of those that had been destroyed made them incline to those that were the boldest for action。

4。 At this time it was that every priest察and every serva
