for telling it。
It came to pass察 then察 that the Count had come to have a perfect
contempt and indifference for Mrs。 Hallhow should he not for a young
person who had given herself up to him so easilyand would have been
quite glad of any opportunity of parting with her。 But there was a certain

lingering shame about the man察which prevented him from saying at once
and abruptly察 Go ─and the poor thing did not choose to take such hints as
fell out in the course of their conversation and quarrels。 And so they kept
on together察 he treating her with simple insult察 and she hanging on
desperately察 by whatever feeble twig she could find察 to the rock beyond
which all was naught察or death察to her。
Well察 after the night with Tom Trippet and the pretty fellows at the
;Rose察─to which we have heard the Count allude in the conversation just
recorded察Fortune smiled on him a good deal察for the Warwickshire squire察
who had lost forty pieces on that occasion察insisted on having his revenge
the night after察when察strange to say察a hundred and fifty more found their
way into the pouch of his Excellency the Count。 Such a sum as this quite
set the young nobleman afloat again察 and brought back a pleasing
equanimity to his mind察 which had been a good deal disturbed in the
former difficult circumstances察 and in this察 for a little and to a certain
extent察poor Cat had the happiness to share。 He did not alter the style of
his establishment察which consisted察as before察of herself and a small person
who acted as scourer察kitchen´wench察and scullion察Mrs。 Catherine always
putting her hand to the principal pieces of the dinner察but he treated his
mistress with tolerable good´humour察 or察 to speak more correctly察 with
such bearable brutality as might be expected from a man like him to a
woman in her condition。 Besides察a certain event was about to take place察
which not unusually occurs in circumstances of this nature察 and Mrs。
Catherine was expecting soon to lie in。
The Captain察 distrusting naturally the strength of his own paternal
feelings察had kindly endeavoured to provide a parent for the coming infant察
and to this end had opened a negotiation with our friend Mr。 Thomas
Bullock察declaring that Mrs。 Cat should have a fortune of twenty guineas察
and reminding Tummas of his ancient flame for her此 but Mr。 Tummas察
when this proposition was made to him察declined it察with many oaths察and
vowed that he was perfectly satisfied with his present bachelor condition。
In this dilemma察 Mr。 Brock stepped forward察who declared himself very
ready to accept Mrs。 Catherine and her fortune此and might possibly have
become the possessor of both察had not Mrs。 Cat察the moment she heard of

the proposed arrangement察with fire in her eyes察and rageoh察how bitter
´in her heart察 prevented the success of the measure by proceeding
incontinently to the first justice of the peace察and there swearing before his
worship who was the father of the coming child。
This proceeding察 which she had expected would cause not a little
indignation on the part of her lord and master察 was received by him察
strangely enough察 with considerable good´humour此 he swore that the
wench had served him a good trick察and was rather amused at the anger察
the outbreak of fierce rage and contumely察 and the wretched wretched
tears of heartsick desperation察 which followed her announcement of this
step to him。 For Mr。 Brock察she repelled his offer with scorn and loathing察
and treated the notion of a union with Mr。 Bullock with yet fiercer
contempt。 Marry him indeed a workhouse pauper carrying a brown´bess
She would have died sooner察she said察or robbed on the highway。 And so察
to do her justice察 she would此 for the little minx was one of the vainest
creatures in existence察 and vanity as I presume everybody knows
becomes THE principle in certain women's heartstheir moral spectacles察
their conscience察their meat and drink察their only rule of right and wrong。
As for Mr。 Tummas察he察as we have seen察was quite unfriendly to the
proposition as she could be察and the Corporal察with a good deal of comical
gravity察vowed that察as he could not be satisfied in his dearest wishes察he
would take to drinking for a consolation此which he straightway did。
;Come察Tummas察─said he to Mr。 Bullock ;since we CAN'T have the
girl of our hearts察why察hang it察Tummas察let's drink her health ─To which
Bullock had no objection。 And so strongly did the disappointment weigh
upon honest Corporal Brock察that even when察after unheard´of quantities
of beer察he could scarcely utter a word察he was seen absolutely to weep察
and察 in accents almost unintelligible察 to curse his confounded ill´luck at
being deprived察not of a wife察but of a child此he wanted one so察he said察to
comfort him in his old age。
The time of Mrs。 Catherine's couche drew near察arrived察and was gone
through safely。 She presented to the world a chopping boy察who might use察
if he liked察the Galgenstein arms with a bar´sinister察and in her new cares
and duties had not so many opportunities as usual of quarrelling with the

Count此who察perhaps察respected her situation察or察at least察was so properly
aware of the necessity of quiet to her察that he absented himself from home
morning察noon察and night。
The Captain had察 it must be confessed察 turned these continued
absences to a considerable worldly profit察for he played incessantly察and察
since his first victory over the Warwickshire Squire察Fortune had been so
favourable to him察that he had at various intervals amassed a sum of nearly
a thousand pounds察which he used to bring home as he won察and which he
deposited in a strong iron chest察cunningly screwed down by himself under
his own bed。 This Mrs。 Catherine regularly made察 and the treasure
underneath it could be no secret to her。 However察the noble Count kept the
key察 and bound her by many solemn oaths that he discharged at her
himself not to reveal to any other person the existence of the chest and its
contents。
But it is not in a woman's nature to keep such secrets察and the Captain察
who left her for days and days察 did not reflect that she would seek for
confidants elsewhere。 For want of a female companion察she was compelled
to bestow her sympathies upon Mr。 Brock察who察as the Count's corporal察
was much in his lodgings察 and who did manage to survive the
disappointment which he had experienced by Mrs。 Catherine's refusal of
him。
About two months after the infant's birth察 the Captain察 who was
annoyed by its squalling察put it abroad to nurse察and dismissed its attendant。
Mrs。 Catherine now resumed her household duties察and was察as before察at
once mistress and servant of the establishment。 As such察she had the keys
of the beer察 and was pretty sure of the attentions of the Corporal察 who
became察 as we have said察 in the Count's absence察 his lady's chief friend
and companion。 After the manner of ladies察she very speedily confided to
him all her domestic secrets察 the causes of her former discontent察 the
Count's ill´ treatment of her察the wicked names he called her察the prices
that all her gowns had cost her察how he beat her察how much money he won
and lost at play察how she had once pawned a coat for him察how he had four
new ones察 laced察 and paid for察 what was the best way of cleaning and
keeping gold´lace察 of making cherry´brandy察 pickling salmon察 etc。察 etc。

Her confidences upon all these subjects used to follow each other in rapid
succession察and Mr。 Brock became察ere long察quite as well acquainted with
the Captain's history for the last year as the Count himselffor he was
careless察and forgot things察women never do。 They chronicle all the lover's
small actions察his words察his headaches察the dresses he has worn察the things
he has liked for dinner on certain daysall which circumstances
commonly are expunged from the male brain immediately after they have
occurred察but remain fixed with the female。
To Brock察then察and to Brock only for she knew no other soul察Mrs。
Cat breathed察in strictest confidence察the history of the Count's winnings察
and his way of disposing of them察how he kept his money screwed down
in an iron chest in their room察and a very lucky fellow did Brock consider
his officer for having such a large sum。 He and Cat looked at the chest此it
was small察but mighty strong察sure enough察and would defy picklocks and
thieves。 Well察 if
