Cat拭─
;Poison ─ said she。 ;It's no poison。 Give me the glass。; And she
pledged Max察and drank a little of it。 ;'Tis good punch察Max察and of my
brewing察I don't think you will ever get any better。; And she went back to
the sofa again察and sat down察and looked at the players。
Mr。 Brock looked at her white face and fixed eyes with a grim kind of
curiosity。 The Count sputtered察 and cursed the horrid taste of the punch
still察but he presently took the box察and made his threatened throw。
As before察the Squire beat him察and having booked his winnings察rose
from table as well as he might and besought to lead him downstairs察which
Mr。 Brock did。
Liquor had evidently stupefied the Count此he sat with his head between
his hands察 muttering wildly about ill´luck察 seven's the main察 bad punch察
and so on。 The street´door banged to察 and the steps of Brock and the
Squire were heard察until they could be heard no more。
;Max察─said she察but he did not answer。 ;Max察─said she again察laying
her hand on his shoulder。
;Curse you察─said that gentleman察 keep off察and don't be laying your
paws upon me。 Go to bed察you jade察or tofor what I care察and give me
first some more puncha gallon more punch察do you hear拭─
The gentleman察 by the curses at the commencement of this little
speech察and the request contained at the end of it察showed that his losses
vexed him察and that he was anxious to forget them temporarily。
;Oh察Max ─whimpered Mrs。 Cat察 youdon'twant any more punch拭─

;Don't Shan't I be drunk in my own house察 you cursed whimpering
jade察you拭Get out ─and with this the Captain proceeded to administer a
blow upon Mrs。 Catherine's cheek。
Contrary to her custom察she did not avenge it察or seek to do so察as on
the many former occasions when disputes of this nature had arisen
between the Count and her察but now Mrs。 Catherine fell on her knees and察
clasping her hands and looking pitifully in the Count's face察 cried察 Oh察
Count察forgive me察forgive me ─
;Forgive you What for拭 Because I slapped your face拭 Ha察 ha I'll
forgive you again察if you don't mind。;
;Oh察no察no察no ─said she察wringing her hands。 ;It isn't that。 Max察dear
Max察will you forgive me拭It isn't the blowI don't mind that察it's;
;It's what察youmaudlin fool拭─
;IT'S THE PUNCH ─
The Count察who was more than half seas over察here assumed an air of
much tipsy gravity。 ;The punch No察 I never will forgive you that last
glass of punch。 Of all the foul察beastly drinks I ever tasted察that was the
worst。 No察I never will forgive you that punch。;
;Oh察it isn't that察it isn't that ─said she。
;I tell you it is thatyou That punch察I say that punch was no better
than pawaw´oison。; And here the Count's head sank back察and he fell to
snore。
;IT WAS POISON ─said she。
;WHAT ─ screamed he察 waking up at once察 and spurning her away
from him。 ;What察you infernal murderess察have you killed me拭─
;Oh察Maxdon't kill me察Max It was laudanumindeed it was。 You
were going to be married察and I was furious察and I went and got;
;Hold your tongue察you fiend察─roared out the Count察and with more
presence of mind than politeness察he flung the remainder of the liquor and察
indeed察the glass with it at the head of Mrs。 Catherine。 But the poisoned
chalice missed its mark察and fell right on the nose of Mr。 Tom Trippet察who
was left asleep and unobserved under the table。
Bleeding察staggering察swearing察indeed a ghastly sight察up sprang Mr。
Trippet察and drew his rapier。 ;Come on察─says he察 never say die What's

the row拭 I'm ready for a dozen of you。; And he made many blind and
furious passes about the room。
;Curse you察 we'll die together ─ shouted the Count察 as he too pulled
out his toledo察and sprang at Mrs。 Catherine。
;Help murder thieves ─ shrieked she。 ;Save me察 Mr。 Trippet察 save
me ─and she placed that gentleman between herself and the Count察 and
then made for the door of the bedroom察and gained it察and bolted it。
;Out of the way察 Trippet察─ roared the Count;out of the way察 you
drunken beast I'll murder her察I willI'll have the devil's life。; And here he
gave a swinging cut at Mr。 Trippet's sword此 it sent the weapon whirling
clean out of his hand察and through a window into the street。
;Take my life察then察─said Mr。 Trippet此 I'm drunk察but I'm a man察and察
damme will never say die。;
;I don't want your life察you stupid fool。 Hark you察Trippet察wake and
be sober察 if you can。 That woman has heard of my marriage with Miss
Dripping。;
;Twenty thousand pound察─ejaculated Trippet。 ;She has been jealous察I
tell you察and POISONED us。 She has put laudanum into the punch。;
;What察 in MY punch拭─ said Trippet察 growing quite sober and losing
his courage。 ;O Lord O Lord ─
;Don't stand howling there察but run for a doctor察'tis our only chance。;
And away ran Mr。 Trippet察as if the deuce were at his heels。
The Count had forgotten his murderous intentions regarding his
mistress察or had deferred them at least察under the consciousness of his own
pressing danger。 And it must be said察 in the praise of a man who had
fought for and against Marlborough and Tallard察that his courage in this
trying and novel predicament never for a moment deserted him察but that he
showed the greatest daring察as well as ingenuity察in meeting and averting
the danger。 He flew to the sideboard察 where were the relics of a supper察
and seizing the mustard and salt pots察and a bottle of oil察he emptied them
all into a jug察into which he further poured a vast quantity of hot water。
This pleasing mixture he then察without a moment's hesitation察placed to his
lips察and swallowed as much of it as nature would allow him。 But when he
had imbibed about a quart察 the anticipated effect was produced察 and he

was enabled察 by the power of this ingenious extemporaneous emetic察 to
get rid of much of the poison which Mrs。 Catherine had administered to
him。
He was employed in these efforts when the doctor entered察along with
Mr。 Brock and Mr。 Trippet察who was not a little pleased to hear that the
poisoned punch had not in all probability been given to him。 He was
recommended to take some of the Count's mixture察 as a precautionary
measure察but this he refused察and retired home察leaving the Count under
charge of the physician and his faithful corporal。
It is not necessary to say what further remedies were employed by
them to restore the Captain to health察 but after some time the doctor察
pronouncing that the danger was察he hoped察averted察recommended that his
patient should be put to bed察and that somebody should sit by him察which
Brock promised to do。
;That she´devil will murder me察if you don't察─gasped the poor Count。
;You must turn her out of the bedroom察 or break open the door察 if she
refuses to let you in。;
And this step was found to be necessary察 for察 after shouting many
times察and in vain察Mr。 Brock found a small iron bar indeed察he had the
instrument for many days in his pocket察and forced the lock。 The room
was empty察the window was open此the pretty barmaid of the ;Bugle; had
fled。
;The chest察─said the Count;is the chest safe拭─
The Corporal flew to the bed察under which it was screwed察and looked察
and said察 It IS safe察thank Heaven ─The window was closed。 The Captain察
who was too weak to stand without help察was undressed and put to bed。
The Corporal sat down by his side察 slumber stole over the eyes of the
patient察and his wakeful nurse marked with satisfaction the progress of the
beneficent restorer of health。
When the Captain awoke察as he did some time afterwards察he found察
very much to his surprise察that a gag had been placed in his mouth察and
that the Corporal was in the act of wheeling his bed to another part of the
room。 He attempted to move察 and gave utterance to such unintelligible
sounds as could issue through a silk handkerchief。

;If your honour stirs or cries out in the least察I will cut your honour's
throat察─said the Corporal。
And then察having recourse to his iron bar the reader will now see why
he was provided with such an implement察for he had been meditating this
coup for some days察he proceeded first to attempt to burst the lock of the
little iron chest in which the Count kept his treasure察and察failing in this察to
unscrew it from the ground察which operation he performed satisfactorily。
;You see察 Count察─ said he察 calmly察 when rogues fall out there's the
deuce to pay。 You'll have me drummed
