never a pause or a halt of five minutes to get a drink察until his dying day察
let the reader imagine that since he left Mrs。 Hayes and all the other
worthy personages of this history察 in the last chapter察 seven years have
sped away察 during which察 all our heroes and heroines have been
accomplishing their destinies。
Seven years of country carpentering察or rather trading察on the part of a
husband察of ceaseless scolding察violence察and discontent on the part of a
wife察are not pleasant to describe此so we shall omit altogether any account
of the early married life of Mr。 and Mrs。 John Hayes。 The ;Newgate
Calendar; to which excellent compilation we and the OTHER popular
novelists of the day can never be sufficiently grateful states that Hayes
left his house three or four times during this period察 and察 urged by the
restless humours of his wife察tried several professions此returning察however察

as he grew weary of each察 to his wife and his paternal home。 After a
certain time his parents died察and by their demise he succeeded to a small
property察and the carpentering business察which he for some time followed。
What察then察in the meanwhile察had become of Captain Wood察or Brock察
and Ensign Macshanethe only persons now to be accounted for in our
catalogue。 For about six months after their capture and release of Mr。
Hayes察 those noble gentlemen had followed察 with much prudence and
success察 that trade which the celebrated and polite Duval察 the ingenious
Sheppard察the dauntless Turpin察and indeed many other heroes of our most
popular novels察 had pursuedor were pursuing察 in their time。 And so
considerable were said to be Captain Wood's gains察 that reports were
abroad of his having somewhere a buried treasure察to which he might have
added more察had not Fate suddenly cut short his career as a prig。 He and
the Ensign wereshame to saytransported for stealing three pewter´pots
off a railing at Exeter察and not being known in the town察which they had
only reached that morning察they were detained by no further charges察but
simply condemned on this one。 For this misdemeanour察 Her Majesty's
Government vindictively sent them for seven years beyond the sea察and察as
the fashion then was察 sold the use of their bodies to Virginian planters
during that space of time。 It is thus察alas that the strong are always used to
deal with the weak察 and many an honest fellow has been led to rue his
unfortunate difference with the law。
Thus察then察we have settled all scores。 The Count is in Holland with his
wife察Mrs。 Cat in Warwickshire along with her excellent husband察Master
Thomas Billings with his adoptive parents in the same county察and the two
military gentlemen watching the progress and cultivation of the tobacco
and cotton plant in the New World。 All these things having passed between
the acts察dingaring´a´dingaring´a´dingledingleding察the drop draws up察and
the next act begins。 By the way察the play ENDS with a drop此but that is
neither here nor there。

Mrs。 Hayes had now been for six years the adored wife of Mr。 Hayes察
and no offspring had arisen to bless their loves and perpetuate their name。
She had obtained a complete mastery over her lord and master察and having
had察as far as was in that gentleman's power察every single wish gratified
that she could demand察 in the way of dress察 treats to Coventry and
Birmingham察drink察and what notfor察though a hard man察John Hayes had
learned to spend his money pretty freely on himself and herhaving had
all her wishes gratified察 it was natural that she should begin to find out
some more察and the next whim she hit upon was to be restored to her child。
It may be as well to state that she had never informed her husband of the
existence of that phenomenon察although he was aware of his wife's former
connection with the CountMrs。 Hayes察 in their matrimonial quarrels察
invariably taunting him with accounts of her former splendour and
happiness察and with his own meanness of taste in condescending to take
up with his Excellency's leavings。
She determined察then but as yet had not confided her determination to
her husband察 she would have her boy察 although in her seven years'
residence within twenty miles of him she had never once thought of seeing
him此and the kind reader knows that when his excellent lady determines on
a thinga shawl察 or an opera´box察 or a new carriage察 or twenty´four
singing´lessons from Tamburini察 or a night at the ;Eagle Tavern察─ City

I say that when a woman is resolved on a thing察 happen it will察 if
husbands refuse察Fate will interfere flectere si nequeo察etc。察but quotations
are odious。 And some hidden power was working in the case of Mrs。
