way察and the rope stretches tight察the poor wretch before St。 Sepulchre's
clock dies。 Only with us察clear´sighted mortals as we are察we can't SEE the
rope by which we hang察and know not when or how the drop may fall。
But revenons a nos moutons此let us return to that sweet lamb Master
Thomas察and the milk´white ewe Mrs。 Cat。 Seven years had passed away察
and she began to think that she should very much like to see her child once
more。 It was written that she should察and you shall hear how察soon after察
without any great exertions of hers察back he came to her。
In the month of July察in the year 1715察there came down a road about
ten miles from the city of Worcester察 two gentlemen察 not mounted察
Templar´like察upon one horse察but having a horse between thema sorry
bay察with a sorry saddle察and a large pack behind it察on which each by turn
took a ride。 Of the two察one was a man of excessive stature察with red hair察

a very prominent nose察and a faded military dress察while the other察an old
weather´beaten察sober´looking personage察wore the costume of a civilian
both man and dress appearing to have reached the autumnal察or seedy state。
However察 the pair seemed察 in spite of their apparent poverty察 to be
passably merry。 The old gentleman rode the horse察and had察in the course
of their journey察ridden him two miles at least in every three。 The tall one
walked with immense strides by his side察 and seemed察 indeed察 as if he
could have quickly outstripped the four´footed animal察had he chosen to
exert his speed察or had not affection for his comrade retained him at his
stirrup。
A short time previously the horse had cast a shoe察and this the tall man
on foot had gathered up察and was holding in his hand此it having been voted
that the first blacksmith to whose shop they should come should be called
upon to fit it again upon the bay horse。
;Do you remimber this counthry察Meejor拭─said the tall man察who was
looking about him very much pleased察and sucking a flower。 ;I think thim
green cornfields is prettier looking at than the d´ tobacky out yondther察
and bad lack to it ─
;I recollect the place right well察and some queer pranks we played here
seven years agone察─ responded the gentleman addressed as Major。 ;You
remember that man and his wife察 whom we took in pawn at the 'Three
Rooks'拭─
;And the landlady only hung last Michaelmas拭─ said the tall man察
parenthetically。
;Hang the landladywe've got all we ever would out of HER察 you
know。 But about the man and woman。 You went after the chap's mother察
and察like a jackass察as you are察let him loose。 Well察the woman was that
Catherine that you've often heard me talk about。 I like the wench察 her察
for I almost brought her up察and she was for a year or two along with that
scoundrel Galgenstein察who has been the cause of my ruin。;
;The inferrnal blackguard and ruffian ─ said the tall man察 who察 with
his companion察has no doubt been recognised by the reader。
;Well察this Catherine had a child by Galgenstein察and somewhere here
hard by the woman lived to whom we carried the brat to nurse。 She was

the wife of a blacksmith察one Billings此it won't be out of the way to get our
horse shod at his house察if he is alive still察and we may learn something
about the little beast。 I should be glad to see the mother well enough。;
;Do I remimber her拭─said the Ensign。 ;Do I remimber whisky拭Sure I
do察 and the snivelling sneak her husband察 and the stout old lady her
mother´in´law察and the dirty one´eyed ruffian who sold me the parson's hat
that had so nearly brought me into trouble。 Oh but it was a rare rise we got
out of them chaps察and the old landlady that's hanged too ─And here both
Ensign Macshane and Major Brock察or Wood察grinned察and showed much
satisfaction。
It will be necessary to explain the reason of it。 We gave the British
public to understand that the landlady of the ;Three Rooks察─at Worcester察
was a notorious fence察or banker of thieves察that is察a purchaser of their
merchandise。 In her hands Mr。 Brock and his companion had left property
to the amount of sixty or seventy pounds察which was secreted in a cunning
recess in a chamber of the ;Three Rooks; known only to the landlady and
the gentlemen who banked with her察 and in this place察 Mr。 Sicklop察 the
one´eyed man who had joined in the Hayes adventure察his comrade察and
one or two of the topping prigs of the county察were free。 Mr。 Sicklop had
been shot dead in a night attack near Bath此the landlady had been suddenly
hanged察as an accomplice in another case of robbery察and when察on their
return from Virginia察our two heroes察whose hopes of livelihood depended
upon it察 had bent their steps towards Worcester察 they were not a little
frightened to hear of the cruel fate of the hostess and many of the amiable
frequenters of the ;Three Rooks。; All the goodly company were separated察
the house was no longer an inn。 Was the money gone too拭At least it was
worth while to look which Messrs。 Brock and Macshane determined to
do。
The house being now a private one察Mr。 Brock察with a genius that was
above his station察visited its owner察with a huge portfolio under his arm察
and察in the character of a painter察requested permission to take a particular
sketch from a particular window。 The Ensign followed with the artist's
materials consisting simply of a screwdriver and a crowbar察 and it is
hardly necessary to say that察 when admission was granted to them察 they

opened the well´known door察 and to their inexpressible satisfaction
discovered察 not their own peculiar savings exactly察 for these had been
appropriated instantly察 on hearing of their transportation察 but stores of
money and goods to the amount of near three hundred pounds此to which
Mr。 Macshane said they had as just and honourable a right as anybody else。
And so they had as just a right as anybodyexcept the original owners此but
who was to discover them拭
With this booty they set out on their journeyanywhere察for they knew
not whither察and it so chanced that when their horse's shoe came off察they
were within a few furlongs of the cottage of Mr。 Billings察the blacksmith。
As they came near察 they were saluted by tremendous roars issuing from
the smithy。 A small boy was held across the bellows察two or three children
of smaller and larger growth were holding him down察and many others of
the village were gazing in at the window察 while a man察 half´naked察 was
lashing the little boy with a whip察and occasioning the cries heard by the
travellers。 As the horse drew up察the operator looked at the new´ comers
for a moment察 and then proceeded incontinently with his work察
belabouring the child more fiercely than ever。
When he had done察he turned round to the new´comers and asked how
he could serve them拭 whereupon Mr。 Wood for such was the name he
adopted察and by such we shall call him to the end wittily remarked that
however he might wish to serve THEM察he seemed mightily inclined to
serve that young gentleman first。
;It's no joking matter察─ said the blacksmith此 if I don't serve him so
now察he'll be worse off in his old age。 He'll come to the gallows察as sure as
his name is Bill´never mind what his name is。; And so saying察he gave
the urchin another cut察which elicited察of course察another scream。
;Oh his name is Bill拭─said Captain Wood。
;His name's NOT Bill ─said the blacksmith察sulkily。 ;He's no name察
and no heart察neither。 My wife took the brat in察seven years ago察from a
beggarly French chap to nurse察and she kept him察for she was a good soul;
here his eyes began to wink察 and she'sshe's gone now; here he began
fairly to blubber。 ;And d´ him察out of love for her察I kept him too察and
the scoundrel is a liar and a thief。 This blessed day察merely to vex me and

my boys here察 he spoke ill of her察he did察and I'llcuthislifeoutI
will ─and with each word honest Mulciber applied a whack on the body of
little Tom Billings察 who察 by shrill shrieks察 and oaths in treble察
acknowledged the receipt of the blows。
;Come察come察─said Mr。 Wood察 set the boy down察and the bellows a´
going察 my horse wants shoeing察 and the poor lad has had strapping
enough。;
The blacksmith obeyed察 and cast poor Master Thomas loose。 As he
staggered away and looked back at his tormentor察 his countenance
assumed an expression which made Mr。 Wood say察 grasping hold of
Macshane's arm察 It's the boy察 it's the boy When his mother gave
Galgenstein the laudanum察she had the self´same look with her ─
;Had she really now拭─ said Mr。 Macshane。 ;And
