abstains From profit of his acts is abstinent。
The fruit of labours察 in the lives to come察 Is threefold for all men察
Desirable察And Undesirable察and mixed of both察But no fruit is at all where
no work was。
Hear from me察Long´armed Lord the makings five Which go to every
act察in Sankhya taught As necessary。 First the force察and then The agent察

next察 the various instruments察 Fourth察 the especial effort察 fifth察 the God。
What work soever any mortal doth Of body察mind察or speech察evil or good察
By these five doth he that。 Which being thus察 Whoso察 for lack of
knowledge察 seeth himself As the sole actor察 knoweth nought at all And
seeth nought。 Therefore察 I say察 if one Holding aloof from selfwith
unstained mind Should slay all yonder host察being bid to slay察He doth not
slay察he is not bound thereby
Knowledge察the thing known察and the mind which knows察These make
the threefold starting´ground of act。 The act察the actor察and the instrument察
These make the threefold total of the deed。 But knowledge察agent察act察are
differenced By three dividing qualities。 Hear now Which be the qualities
dividing them。
There is ;true; Knowledge。 Learn thou it is this此To see one changeless
Life in all the Lives察 And in the Separate察 One Inseparable。 There is
imperfect Knowledge此that which sees The separate existences apart察And察
being separated察 holds them real。 There is false Knowledge此 that which
blindly clings To one as if 'twere all察seeking no Cause察Deprived of light察
narrow察and dull察and ;dark。;
There is ;right; Action此 that which being enjoined Is wrought
without attachment察passionlessly察For duty察not for love察nor hate察nor gain。
There is ;vain; Action此that which men pursue Aching to satisfy desires察
impelled By sense of self察 with all´absorbing stress此 This is of Rajas
passionate and vain。 There is ;dark; Action此 when one doth a thing
Heedless of issues察heedless of the hurt Or wrong for others察heedless if he
harm His own soul'tis of Tamas察black and bad
There is the ;rightful;doer。 He who acts Free from self´seeking察
humble察resolute察Steadfast察in good or evil hap the same察Content to do
aright´he ;truly; acts。 There is th' ;impassioned; doer。 He that works From
impulse察seeking profit察rude and bold To overcome察unchastened察slave by
turns Of sorrow and of joy此of Rajas he And there be evil doers察loose of
heart察Low´minded察stubborn察fraudulent察remiss察Dull察slow察despondent
children of the ;dark。;
Hear察 too察 of Intellect and Steadfastness The threefold separation察
Conqueror´Prince How these are set apart by Qualities。

The Bhagavad´Gita察translated
Good is the Intellect which comprehends The coming forth and going
back of life察What must be done察and what must not be done察What should
be feared察 and what should not be feared察 What binds and what
emancipates the soul此 That is of Sattwan察 Prince of ;soothfastness。;
Marred is the Intellect which察 knowing right And knowing wrong察 and
what is well to do And what must not be done察 yet understands Nought
with firm mind察 nor as the calm truth is此 This is of Rajas察 Prince and
;passionate ─ Evil is Intellect which察 wrapped in gloom察 Looks upon
wrong as right察and sees all things Contrariwise of Truth。 O Pritha's Son
That is of Tamas察 dark; and desperate
Good is the steadfastness whereby a man Masters his beats of heart察
his very breath Of life察the action of his senses察fixed In never´shaken faith
and piety此That is of Sattwan察Prince soothfast; and fair Stained is the
steadfastness whereby a man Holds to his duty察purpose察effort察end察For
life's sake察 and the love of goods to gain察Arjuna 'tis of Rajas察 passion´
stamped Sad is the steadfastness wherewith the fool Cleaves to his sloth察
his sorrow察 and his fears察 His folly and despair。 ThisPritha's Son Is
born of Tamas察 dark; and miserable
Hear further察 Chief of Bharatas from Me The threefold kinds of
Pleasure which there be。
Good Pleasure is the pleasure that endures察 Banishing pain for aye察
bitter at first As poison to the soul察 but afterward Sweet as the taste of
Amrit。 Drink of that It springeth in the Spirit's deep content。 And painful
Pleasure springeth from the bond Between the senses and the sense´world。
Sweet As Amrit is its first taste察but its last Bitter as poison。 'Tis of Rajas察
Prince And foul and ;dark; the Pleasure is which springs From sloth and
sin and foolishness察at first And at the last察and all the way of life The soul
bewildering。 'Tis of Tamas察Prince
For nothing lives on earth察nor 'midst the gods In utmost heaven察but
hath its being bound With these three Qualities察by Nature framed。
The work of Brahmans察 Kshatriyas察 Vaisyas察 And Sudras察 O thou
Slayer of thy Foes Is fixed by reason of the Qualities Planted in each此
A Brahman's virtues察 Prince Born of his nature察 are serenity察 Self´
mastery察religion察purity察Patience察uprightness察learning察and to know The

truth of things which be。 A Kshatriya's pride察Born of his nature察lives in
valour察 fire察 Constancy察 skilfulness察 spirit in fight察And open´handedness
and noble mien察As of a lord of men。 A Vaisya's task察Born with his nature察
is to till the ground察Tend cattle察venture trade。 A Sudra's state察Suiting his
nature察is to minister。
Whoso performethdiligent察content The work allotted him察whate'er
it be察Lays hold of perfectness Hear how a man Findeth perfection察being
so content此He findeth it through worshipwrought by work Of Him that
is the Source of all which lives察 Of HIM by Whom the universe was
stretched。
Better thine own work is察though done with fault察Than doing others'
work察ev'n excellently。 He shall not fall in sin who fronts the task Set him
by Nature's hand Let no man leave His natural duty察 Prince though it
bear blame For every work hath blame察 as every flame Is wrapped in
smoke Only that man attains Perfect surcease of work whose work was
wrought With mind unfettered察soul wholly subdued察Desires for ever dead察

Learn from me察 Son of Kunti also this察 How one察 attaining perfect
peace察attains BRAHM察the supreme察the highest height of all
Devotedwith a heart grown pure察 restrained In lordly self´control察
forgoing wiles Of song and senses察 freed from love and hate察 Dwelling

Ever to holy meditation vowed察From passions liberate察quit of the Self察Of
arrogance察 impatience察 anger察 pride察 Freed from surroundings察 quiet察

know Me as I am察 how high and wonderful察And knowing察 straightway
enters into Me。 And whatsoever deeds he doethfixed In Me察 as in his

So win thou In thy thoughts Do all thou dost for Me Renounce for Me
