Arjuna。 If men forsake the holy ordinance察Heedless of Shastras察yet
keep faith at heart And worship察 what shall be the state of those察 Great

three qualitiesbecoming ;true察─Or ;passion´stained察─or ;dark察─as thou

so is there threefold way Of worship察 abstinence察 and almsgiving Hear
this of Me there is a food which brings Force察 substance察 strength察 and
health察 and joy to live察 Being well´seasoned察 cordial察 comforting察 The

Worship of gods Meriting worship察lowly reverence Of Twice´borns察
Teachers察Elders察Purity察Rectitude察and the Brahmacharya's vow察And not
to injure any helpless thing察These make a true religiousness of Act。
Words causing no man woe察 words ever true察 Gentle and pleasing
words察and those ye say In murmured reading of a Sacred Writ察These
make the true religiousness of Speech。
Serenity of soul察benignity察Sway of the silent Spirit察constant stress To

of Mind。
Such threefold faith察in highest piety Kept察with no hope of gain察by
hearts devote察Is perfect work of Sattwan察true belief。
Religion shown in act of proud display To win good entertainment察
worship察fame察Suchsay Iis of Rajas察rash and vain。
Religion followed by a witless will To torture self察or come at power to

when he who takes Can render nothing back察made in due place察Due time察

The gift selfishly given察 where to receive Is hoped again察 or when
some end is sought察Or where the gift is proffered with a grudge察This is of
Rajas察stained with impulse察ill。
The gift churlishly flung察 at evil time察 In wrongful place察 to base

CHAPTER XVIII
Arjuna。 Fain would I better know察Thou Glorious One The very truth´
´Heart's Lordof Sannyas察 Abstention察 and enunciation察 Lord Tyaga察
and what separates these twain
Krishna。 The poets rightly teach that Sannyas Is the foregoing of all
acts which spring Out of desire察and their wisest say Tyaga is renouncing
fruit of acts。
There be among the saints some who have held All action sinful察and
to be renounced察 And some who answer察 Nay the goodly acts As
worship察 penance察 almsmust be performed ─ Hear now My sentence察
Best of Bharatas
'Tis well set forth察O Chaser of thy Foes Renunciation is of threefold
form察And Worship察 Penance察Alms察 not to be stayed察 Nay察 to be gladly
done察for all those three Are purifying waters for true souls
Yet must be practised even those high works In yielding up attachment察
and all fruit Produced by works。 This is My judgment察 Prince This My
insuperable and fixed decree
Abstaining from a work by right prescribed Never is meet So to
abstain doth spring From ;Darkness察─and Delusion teacheth it。 Abstaining
from a work grievous to flesh察 When one saith ;'Tisunpleasing ─ this is
null Such an one acts from ;passion察─ nought of gain Wins his
Renunciation But察 Arjun Abstaining from attachment to the work察
Abstaining from rewardment in the work察 While yet one doeth it full
faithfully察 Saying察 Tis right to do ─ that is ;true ; act And abstinence
Who doeth duties so察Unvexed if his work fail察if it succeed Unflattered察in
his own heart justified察Quit of debates and doubts察his is ;true; act此For察
being in the body察 none may stand Wholly aloof from act察 yet察 who
abstains From profit of his acts is abstinent。
The fruit of labours察 in the lives to come察 Is threefold for all men察
