has cut all ties�察�removed all temptations�察�renounced all desires�察�he is the
greatest of men。
98。 In a hamlet or in a forest�察 �in the deep water or on the dry land�察�
wherever venerable persons ��Arhanta�� dwell�察�that place is delightful。
99。 Forests are delightful�察�where the world finds no delight�察�there the
passionless will find delight�察�for they look not for pleasures。

Chapter VIII The Thousands
100。 Even though a speech be a thousand ��of words���察�but made up of
senseless words�察 �one word of sense is better�察 �which if a man hears�察 �he
becomes quiet。
101。 Even though a Gatha ��poem�� be a thousand ��of words���察�but made
up of senseless words�察�one word of a Gatha is better�察�which if a man hears�察�
he becomes quiet。
102。 Though a man recite a hundred Gathas made up of senseless
words�察�one word of the law is better�察�which if a man hears�察�he becomes
quiet。
103。 If one man conquer in battle a thousand times thousand men�察�and
if another conquer himself�察�he is the greatest of conquerors。
104�察�105。 One's own self conquered is better than all other people�察�not
even a god�察 �a Gandharva�察 �not Mara with Brahman could change into
defeat the victory of a man who has vanquished himself�察�and always lives
under restraint。
106。 If a man for a hundred years sacrifice month after month with a
thousand�察�and if he but for one moment pay homage to a man whose soul
is grounded ��in true knowledge���察�better is that homage than sacrifice for a
hundred years。
107。 If a man for a hundred years worship Agni ��fire�� in the forest�察�and
if he but for one moment pay homage to a man whose soul is grounded ��in
true knowledge���察�better is that homage than sacrifice for a hundred years。
108。 Whatever a man sacrifice in this world as an offering or as an
oblation for a whole year in order to gain merit�察 �the whole of it is not
worth a quarter ��a farthing���察�reverence shown to the righteous is better。
109。 He who always greets and constantly reveres the aged�察�four things
will increase to him�察�viz。 life�察�beauty�察�happiness�察�power。
110。 But he who lives a hundred years�察�vicious and unrestrained�察�a life
of one day is better if a man is virtuous and reflecting。
111。 And he who lives a hundred years�察�ignorant and unrestrained�察 �a
life of one day is better if a man is wise and reflecting。

Chapter IX Evil
116。 If a man would hasten towards the good�察 �he should keep his
thought away from evil�察�if a man does what is good slothfully�察�his mind
delights in evil。
117。 If a man commits a sin�察�let him not do it again�察�let him not delight
in sin�此�pain is the outcome of evil。
118。 If a man does what is good�察�let him do it again�察�let him delight in
it�此�happiness is the outcome of good。
119。 Even an evil´doer sees happiness as long as his evil deed has not
ripened�察�but when his evil deed has ripened�察�then does the evil´doer see
evil。
120。 Even a good man sees evil days�察�as long as his good deed has not
ripened�察�but when his good deed has ripened�察�then does the good man see
happy days。
121。 Let no man think lightly of evil�察�saying in his heart�察�It will not
come nigh unto me。 Even by the falling of water´drops a water´pot is
filled�察�the fool becomes full of evil�察�even if he gather it little by little。
122。 Let no man think lightly of good�察�saying in his heart�察�It will not

filled�察 �the wise man becomes full of good�察 �even if he gather it little by

123。 Let a man avoid evil deeds�察 �as a merchant�察 �if he has few
companions and carries much wealth�察�avoids a dangerous road�察�as a man
who loves life avoids poison。
124。 He who has no wound on his hand�察 �may touch poison with his
hand�察�poison does not affect one who has no wound�察�nor is there evil for
one who does not commit evil。
125。 If a man offend a harmless�察�pure�察�and innocent person�察 �the evil
falls back upon that fool�察�like light dust thrown up against the wind。
126。 Some people are born again�察 �evil´doers go to hell�察 �righteous
people go to heaven�察 �those who are free from all worldly desires attain
Nirvana。

clefts of the mountains�察�is there known a spot in the whole world where

Chapter X Punishment
129。 All men tremble at punishment�察�all men fear death�察�remember that
you are like unto them�察�and do not kill�察�nor cause slaughter。
130。 All men tremble at punishment�察�all men love life�察�remember that
thou art like unto them�察�and do not kill�察�nor cause slaughter。
131。 He who seeking his own happiness punishes or kills beings who
also long for happiness�察�will not find happiness after death。
132。 He who seeking his own happiness does not punish or kill beings
who also long for happiness�察�will find happiness after death。
133。 Do not speak harshly to anybody�察�those who are spoken to will
answer thee in the same way。 Angry speech is painful�察 �blows for blows
will touch thee。
134。 If�察 �like a shattered metal plate ��gong���察 �thou utter not�察 �then thou
hast reached Nirvana�察�contention is not known to thee。
135。 As a cowherd with his staff drives his cows into the stable�察�so do
Age and Death drive the life of men。
136。 A fool does not know when he commits his evil deeds�此�but the
wicked man burns by his own deeds�察�as if burnt by fire。
137。 He who inflicts pain on innocent and harmless persons�察�will soon
come to one of these ten states�此�
138。 He will have cruel suffering�察 �loss�察 �injury of the body�察 �heavy
affliction�察�or loss of mind�察�
139。 Or a misfortune coming from the king�察�or a fearful accusation�察�or
loss of relations�察�or destruction of treasures�察�
140。 Or lightning´fire will burn his houses�察 �and when his body is
destroyed�察�the fool will go to hell。
141。 Not nakedness�察�not platted hair�察�not dirt�察�not fasting�察�or lying on
the earth�察�not rubbing with dust�察�not sitting motionless�察�can purify a mortal
who has not overcome desires。
142。 He who�察�though dressed in fine apparel�察�exercises tranquillity�察�is
quiet�察 �subdued�察 �restrained�察 �chaste�察 �and has ceased to find fault with all
other beings�察 �he indeed is a Brahmana�察 �an ascetic ��sramana���察 �a friar

143。 Is there in this world any man so restrained by humility that he
does not mind reproof�察�as a well´trained horse the whip�拭�
144。 Like a well´trained horse when touched by the whip�察�be ye active
and lively�察 �and by faith�察 �by virtue�察 �by energy�察 �by meditation�察 �by
discernment of the law you will overcome this great pain ��of reproof���察�
perfect in knowledge and in behaviour�察�and never forgetful。
145。 Well´makers lead the water ��wherever they like���察�fletchers bend
the arrow�察�carpenters bend a log of wood�察�good people fashion themselves。

146。 How is there laughter�察�how is there joy�察�as this world is always
