corruption breaks to pieces�察�life indeed ends in death。
149。 Those white bones�察�like gourds thrown away in the autumn�察�what
pleasure is there in looking at them�拭�
150。 After a stronghold has been made of the bones�察�it is covered with
flesh and blood�察�and there dwell in it old age and death�察�pride and deceit。
151。 The brilliant chariots of kings are destroyed�察 �the body also
approaches destruction�察 �but the virtue of good people never approaches
destruction��thus do the good say to the good。
152。 A man who has learnt little�察�grows old like an ox�察�his flesh grows�察�
but his knowledge does not grow。
153�察�154。 Looking for the maker of this tabernacle�察�I shall have to run
through a course of many births�察�so long as I do not find ��him���察�and painful
is birth again and again。 But now�察 �maker of the tabernacle�察 �thou hast
been seen�察�thou shalt not make up this tabernacle again。 All thy rafters
are broken�察�thy ridge´pole is sundered�察�the mind�察�approaching the Eternal
��visankhara�察�nirvana���察�has attained to the extinction of all desires。
155。 Men who have not observed proper discipline�察 �and have not
gained treasure in their youth�察�perish like old herons in a lake without fish。
156。 Men who have not observed proper discipline�察 �and have not
gained treasure in their youth�察�lie�察�like broken bows�察�sighing after the past。

Chapter XII Self
157。 If a man hold himself dear�察 �let him watch himself carefully�察�
during one at least out of the three watches a wise man should be
watchful。
158。 Let each man direct himself first to what is proper�察�then let him
teach others�察�thus a wise man will not suffer。
159。 If a man make himself as he teaches others to be�察 �then�察 �being
himself well subdued�察 �he may subdue ��others���察 �one's own self is indeed
difficult to subdue。
160。 Self is the lord of self�察 �who else could be the lord�拭 �With self
well subdued�察�a man finds a lord such as few can find。
161。 The evil done by oneself�察 �self´begotten�察 �self´bred�察 �crushes the
foolish�察�as a diamond breaks a precious stone。
162。 He whose wickedness is very great brings himself down to that
state where his enemy wishes him to be�察�as a creeper does with the tree
which it surrounds。
163。 Bad deeds�察�and deeds hurtful to ourselves�察�are easy to do�察�what is
beneficial and good�察�that is very difficult to do。
164。 The foolish man who scorns the rule of the venerable ��Arahat���察�of
the elect ��Ariya���察�of the virtuous�察�and follows false doctrine�察�he bears fruit
to his own destruction�察�like the fruits of the Katthaka reed。
165。 By oneself the evil is done�察�by oneself one suffers�察�by oneself evil
is left undone�察 �by oneself one is purified。 Purity and impurity belong to
oneself�察�no one can purify another。
166。 Let no one forget his own duty for the sake of another's�察�however
great�察�let a man�察�after he has discerned his own duty�察�be always attentive to
his duty。

Chapter XIII The World
167。 Do not follow the evil law� �Do not live on in thoughtlessness� �Do
not follow false doctrine� �Be not a friend of the world。
168。 Rouse thyself� �do not be idle� �Follow the law of virtue� �The
virtuous rests in bliss in this world and in the next。
169。 Follow the law of virtue�察�do not follow that of sin。 The virtuous
rests in bliss in this world and in the next。
170。 Look upon the world as a bubble�察�look upon it as a mirage�此�the
king of death does not see him who thus looks down upon the world。
171。 Come�察�look at this glittering world�察�like unto a royal chariot�察�the
foolish are immersed in it�察�but the wise do not touch it。
172。 He who formerly was reckless and afterwards became sober�察�
brightens up this world�察�like the moon when freed from clouds。
173。 He whose evil deeds are covered by good deeds�察�brightens up this
world�察�like the moon when freed from clouds。
174。 This world is dark�察 �few only can see here�察 �a few only go to
heaven�察�like birds escaped from the net。
175。 The swans go on the path of the sun�察�they go through the ether by
means of their miraculous power�察�the wise are led out of this world�察�when
they have conquered Mara and his train。
176。 If a man has transgressed one law�察�and speaks lies�察�and scoffs at
another world�察�there is no evil he will not do。
177。 The uncharitable do not go to the world of the gods�察�fools only do
not praise liberality�察 �a wise man rejoices in liberality�察 �and through it
becomes blessed in the other world。
178。 Better than sovereignty over the earth�察�better than going to heaven�察�
better than lordship over all worlds�察 �is the reward of the first step in
holiness。

Awakened��
179。 He whose conquest is not conquered again�察�into whose conquest
no one in this world enters�察�by what track can you lead him�察�the Awakened�察�
the Omniscient�察�the trackless�拭�
180。 He whom no desire with its snares and poisons can lead astray�察�by
what track can you lead him�察�the Awakened�察�the Omniscient�察�the trackless�拭�
181。 Even the gods envy those who are awakened and not forgetful�察�
who are given to meditation�察�who are wise�察�and who delight in the repose
of retirement ��from the world��。
182。 Difficult ��to obtain�� is the conception of men�察�difficult is the life
of mortals�察�difficult is the hearing of the True Law�察�difficult is the birth of
the Awakened ��the attainment of Buddhahood��。
183。 Not to commit any sin�察�to do good�察�and to purify one's mind�察�that
is the teaching of ��all�� the Awakened。
184。 The Awakened call patience the highest penance�察�long´suffering
the highest Nirvana�察 �for he is not an anchorite ��pravragita�� who strikes
others�察�he is not an ascetic ��sramana�� who insults others。
185。 Not to blame�察�not to strike�察�to live restrained under the law�察�to be
moderate in eating�察 �to sleep and sit alone�察 �and to dwell on the highest
thoughts��this is the teaching of the Awakened。
186。 There is no satisfying lusts�察�even by a shower of gold pieces�察�he
who knows that lusts have a short taste and cause pain�察�he is wise�察�
187。 Even in heavenly pleasures he finds no satisfaction�察�the disciple
who is fully awakened delights only in the destruction of all desires。
188。 Men�察 �driven by fear�察 �go to many a refuge�察 �to mountains and
forests�察�to groves and sacred trees。
189。 But that is not a safe refuge�察�that is not the best refuge�察�a man is
not delivered from all pains after having gone to that refuge。
190。 He who takes refuge with Buddha�察�the Law�察�and the Church�察�he
who�察�with clear understanding�察�sees the four holy truths�此�

191。 Viz。 pain�察 �the origin of pain�察 �the destruction of pain�察 �and the
eightfold holy way that leads to the quieting of pain�察�
192。 That is the safe refuge�察�that is the best refuge�察�having gone to that
refuge�察�a man is delivered from all pain。
193。 A supernatural person ��a Buddha�� is not easily found�察�he is not
born everywhere。 Wherever such a sage is born�察�that race prospers。
194。 Happy is the arising of the awakened�察�happy is the teaching of the
True Law�察 �happy is peace in the church�察 �happy is the devotion of those
who are at peace。
195�察�196。 He who pays homage to those who deserve homage�察�whether
the awakened ��Buddha�� or their disciples�察�those who have overcome the
host ��of evils���察�and crossed the flood of sorrow�察�he who pays homage to
such as have found deliverance and know no fear�察�his merit can never be
measured by anybody。

197。 Let us live happily then�察 �not hating those who hate us� �among
men who hate us let us dwell free from hatred� �

among men who are greedy let us dwell free from greed� �

201。 Victory breeds hatred�察�for the conquered is unhappy。 He who has
given up both victory and defeat�察�he�察�the contented�察�is happy。
202。 There is no fire like passion�察�there is no losing throw like hatred�察�
there is no pain like this body�察�there is no
