BISHOP。 Yea察of high treason察traitor察heretic。
COBHAM。 Defiance in his face that calls me so。 I am as true a loyal
gentleman Unto his highness as my proudest enemy。 The King shall
witness my late faithful service察For safety of his sacred majesty。
BISHOP。 What thou art the king's hand shall testify此Shewt him察Lord
Warden。
COBHAM。 Jesu defend me Is't possible your cunning could so
temper The princely disposition of his mind察To sign the damage of a loyal
subject拭Well察the best is察it bears an antedate察Procured by my absence察
and your malice察 But I察 since that察 have shewd my self as true As any
churchman that dare challenge me。 Let me be brought before his majesty察
If he acquit me not察then do your worst。
BISHOP。 We are not bound to do king offices For any traitor察
schismatic察nor heretic。 The king's hand is our warrant for our work察Who
is departed on his way for France察And at Southhampton doth repose this
night。
HARPOOLE。 O that it were the blessed will of God察that thou and I
were within twenty mile of it察on Salisbury plan I would lose my head if
ever thou broughtst thy head hither again。
Aside。А
COBHAM。 My Lord Warden o' the cinque Ports察 & my Lord of
Rochester察 ye are joint Commissioners此 favor me so much察 On my
expence to bring me to the king。

COBHAM。 Thither察my good Lord察And if he do not clear me of all
guilt察And all suspicion of conspiracy察 Pawning his princely warrant for
my truth此I ask no favour察but extremest torture。 Bring me察or send me to

Here the Lord Warden察and Croamer uncover the Bishop察and secretly
whispers with him。А
Come hither察 ladynay察 sweet wife察 forbear To heap one sorrow on
another's neck此Tis grief enough falsely to be accused察And not permitted
to acquit my self察Do not thou with thy kind respective tears察Torment thy
husband's heart that bleeds for thee察But be of comfort。 God hath help in
store For those that put assured trust in him。 Dear wife察if they commit me
to the Tower察Come up to London to your sister's house此That being near
me察you may comfort me。 One solace find I settled in my soul察That I am
free from treason's very thought此 Only my conscience for the Gospel's
sake Is cause of all the troubles I sustain。
LADY COBHAM。 O my dear Lord察what shall betide of us拭You to
the Tower察 and I turned out of doors察 Our substance seized unto his
highness' use察Even to the garments longing to our backs。
HARPOOLE。 Patience察good madame察things at worst will mend察And
if they do not察yet our lives may end。
BISHOP。 Urge it no more察 for if an Angel spake察 I swear by sweet
saint Peter's blessed keys察First goes he to the Tower察then to the stake。
CROAMER。 But by your leave察 this warrant doth not stretch To
imprison her。 BISHOP。 No察turn her out of doors察
Lord Warden and Old´castle whisper。А
Even as she is察and lead him to the Tower察With guard enough for fear
of rescuing。
LADY COBHAM。 O察God requite thee察thou blood´thirsty man。
COBHAM。 May it not be察 my Lord of Rochester拭 Wherein have I
incurred your hate so far察That my appeal unto the King's denied拭
BISHOP。 No hate of mine察but power of holy church察Forbids all favor
to false heretics。
COBHAM。 Your private malice察more than public power察Strikes most

at me察but with my life it ends。
HARPOOLE。 O that I had the Bishop in that fear察
Aside。А
That once I had his Sumner by our selves
CROAMER。 My Lord察yet grant one suit unto us all察That this same
ancient serving man may wait Upon my lord his master in the Tower。
BISHOP。 This old iniquity察 this heretic拭 That察 in contempt of our
church discipline察 Compelled my Sumner to devour his process Old
Ruffian past´grace察 upstart schismatic察 Had not the King prayed us to
pardon ye察Ye had fried for it察ye grizzled heretic。
HARPOOLE。 Sblood察my lord Bishop察ye do me wrong。 I am neither
heretic nor puritan察but of the old church此I'll swear察drink ale察kiss a wench察

and spicery察shrive me of my old sins afore Easter察and begin new afore
whitsontide。
CROAMER。 A merry察mad察conceited knave察my lord。
HARPOOLE。 That knave was simply put upon the Bishop。
BISHOP。 Well察God forgive him and I pardon him。 Let him attend his
master in the Tower察For I in charity wish his soul no hurt。
COBHAM。 God bless my soul from such cold charity
BISHOP。 Too th' Tower with him察and when my leisure serves察I will
examine him of Articles。 Look察my lord Warden察as you have in charge察
The Shrive perform his office。
LORD WARDEN。 Yes察my lord。
Enter the Sumner with books。А
BISHOP。 What bringst thou there拭what察books of heresy拭
SUMNER。 Yea察my lord察here's not a latin book察no察not so much as
our lady's Psalter。 Here's the Bible察the testament察the Psalms in meter察
the sickman's salve察 the treasure of gladness察 and all in English察 not so
much but the Almanac's English。
BISHOP。 Away with them察to the fire with them察Clun Now fie upon
these upstart heretics。 All English burn them察burn them quickly察Clun
HARPOOLE。 But do not察Sumner察as you'll answer it察for I have there
English books察my lord察that I'll not part with for your Bishopric此 Bevis
