the family。 His countenance察I thought察wore a mingled expression of low
cunning and perplexity。 He accosted me with trepidation and passed on。
The valet now threw open a door and ushered me into the presence of his
master。
The room in which I found myself was very large and lofty。 The
windows were long察narrow察and pointed察and at so vast a dis´ tance from
the black oaken floor as to be altogether inaccessible from within。 Feeble
gleams of encrimsoned light made their way through the trellised panes察
and served to render sufficiently distinct the more prominent objects
around察the eye察however察struggled in vain to reach the remoter angles of
the chamber察 or the recesses of the vaulted and fretted ceiling。 Dark
draperies hung upon the walls。 The general furniture was profuse察
comfortless察 antique察 and tattered。 Many books and musical instruments
lay scattered about察but failed to give any vitality to the scene。 I felt that I
breathed an atmosphere of sorrow。 An air of stern察deep察and irredeemable
gloom hung over and pervaded all。
Upon my entrance察Usher rose from a sofa on which he had been lying
at full length察and greeted me with a vivacious warmth which had much in
it察I at first thought察of an overdone cordialityof the constrained effort of
the ennuye man of the world。 A glance察 however察 at his countenance察
convinced me of his perfect sincerity。 We sat down察 and for some
moments察while he spoke not察I gazed upon him with a feeling half of pity察
half of awe。 Surely察man had never before so terribly altered察in so brief a

period察 as had Roderick Usher It was with difficulty that I could bring
myself to admit the identity of the wan being before me with the
companion of my early boyhood。 Yet the character of his face had been at
all times remarkable。 A cadaverousness of complexion察an eye large察liquid察
and luminous beyond comparison察lips somewhat thin and very pallid察but
of a surpassingly beautiful curve察a nose of a delicate Hebrew model察but
with a breadth of nostril unusual in similar formations察a finely´moulded
chin察speaking察in its want of prominence察of a want of moral energy察hair
of a more than web´like softness and tenuity察 these features察 with an
inordinate expansion above the regions of the temple察made up altogether
a countenance not easily to be forgotten。 And now in the mere
exaggeration of the prevailing character of these features察 and of the
expression they were wont to convey察 lay so much of change that I
doubted to whom I spoke。 The now ghastly pallor of the skin察and the now
miraculous lustre of the eye察above all things startled and even awed me。
The silken hair察too察had been suffered to grow all unheeded察and as察in its
wild gossamer texture察it floated rather than fell about the face察I could not察
even with effort察connect its Arabesque expression with any idea of simple
humanity。
In the manner of my friend I was at once struck with an incoherence
an inconsistency察and I soon found this to arise from a series of feeble and
futile struggles to overcome an habitual trepidancyan excessive nervous
agitation。 For something of this nature I had indeed been prepared察no less
by his letter察 than by reminiscences of certain boyish traits察 and by
conclusions deduced from his peculiar physical conformation and
temperament。 His action was alternately vivacious and sullen。 His voice
varied rapidly from a tremulous indecision when the animal spirits
seemed utterly in abeyance to that species of energetic concisionthat
abrupt察weighty察unhurried察and hollow´sounding enunciationthat leaden察
self´ balanced and perfectly modulated guttural utterance察which may be
observed in the lost drunkard察or the irreclaimable eater of opium察during
the periods of his most intense excitement。
It was thus that he spoke of the object of my visit察of his earnest desire
to see me察and of the solace he expected me to afford him。 He entered察at

some length察into what he conceived to be the nature of his malady。 It was察
he said察a constitutional and a family evil察and one for which he despaired
to find a remedya mere nervous affection察he immediately added察which
would undoubtedly soon pass off。 It displayed itself in a host of unnatural
sensations。 Some of these察as he detailed them察interested and bewildered
me察although察perhaps察the terms察and the general manner of the narration
had their weight。 He suffered much from a morbid acuteness of the senses察
the most insipid food was alone endurable察he could wear only garments
of certain texture察the odours of all flowers were oppressive察his eyes were
tortured by even a faint light察 and there were but peculiar sounds察 and
these from stringed instruments察which did not inspire him with horror。
To an anomalous species of terror I found him a bounden slave。 ;I
shall perish察─said he察 I must perish in this deplorable folly。 Thus察thus察
and not otherwise察shall I be lost。 I dread the events of the future察not in
themselves察but in their results。 I shudder at the thought of any察even the
most trivial察incident察which may operate upon this intolerable agitation of
soul。 I have察indeed察no abhorrence of danger察except in its absolute effect´
´in terror。 In this unnervedin this pitiable conditionI feel that the period
will sooner or later arrive when I must abandon life and reason together察in
some struggle with the grim phantasm察FEAR。;
I learned察 moreover察 at intervals察 and through broken and equivocal
hints察another singular feature of his mental condition。 He was enchained
by certain superstitious impressions in regard to the dwelling which he
tenanted察 and whence察 for many years察 he had never ventured forthin
regard to an influence whose supposititious force was conveyed in terms
too shadowy here to be re´statedan influence which some peculiarities in
the mere form and substance of his family mansion察had察by dint of long
sufferance察he said察obtained over his spiritan effect which the physique
of the grey walls and turrets察and of the dim tarn into which they all looked
down察had察at length察brought about upon the morale of his existence。
He admitted察 however察 although with hesitation察 that much of the
peculiar gloom which thus afflicted him could be traced to a more natural
and far more palpable originto the severe and long´continued illness
indeed to the evidently approaching dis´ solutionof a tenderly beloved

sisterhis sole companion for long yearshis last and only relative on
earth。 ;Her decease察─he said察with a bitterness which I can never forget察
;would leave him him the hopeless and the frail the last of the ancient
race of the Ushers。; While he spoke察the lady Madeline for so was she
called passed slowly through a remote portion of the apartment察 and察
without having noticed my presence察disappeared。 I regarded her with an
utter astonishment not unmingled with dreadand yet I found it
impossible to account for such feelings。 A sensation of stupor oppressed
me察 as my eyes followed her retreating steps。 When a door察 at length察
closed upon her察 my glance sought instinctively and eagerly the
countenance of the brotherbut he had buried his face in his hands察and I
could only perceive that a far more than ordinary wanness had overspread
the emaciated fingers through which trickled many passionate tears。
The disease of the lady Madeline had long baffled the skill of her
physicians。 A settled apathy察 a gradual wasting away of the person察 and
frequent although transient affections of a partially cataleptical character察
were the unusual diagnosis。 Hitherto she had steadily borne up against the
pressure of her malady察and had not betaken herself finally to bed察but察on
the closing in of the evening of my arrival at the house察she succumbed as
her brother told me at night with inexpressible agitation to the prostrating
power of the destroyer察and I learned that the glimpse I had obtained of her
person would thus probably be the last I should obtainthat the lady察 at
least while living察would be seen by me no more。
For several days ensuing察her name was unmentioned by either Usher
or myself此 and during this period I was busied in earnest endeavours to
alleviate the melancholy of my friend。 We painted and read together察or I
listened察as if in a dream察to the wild improvisations of his speaking guitar。
And thus察 as a closer and still closer intimacy admitted me more
unreservedly into the recesses of his spirit察the more bitterly did I perceive
the futility of all attempt at cheering a mind from which
