at ease And察 finding comfortable chests and knees Carelessly slept。 But
many there stood still To face the stark察 blank sky beyond the ridge察
Knowing their feet had come to the end of the world。
Marvelling they stood察and watched the long grass swirled By the May
breeze察murmurous with wasp and midge察For though the summer oozed
into their veins Like the injected drug for their bones' pains察Sharp on their
souls hung the imminent line of grass察 Fearfully flashed the sky's
mysterious glass。
Hour after hour they ponder the warm field And the far valley
behind察 where the buttercups Had blessed with gold their slow boots
coming up察Where even the little brambles would not yield察But clutched
and clung to them like sorrowing hands察They breathe like trees unstirred。
Till like a cold gust thrilled the little word At which each body and its
soul begird And tighten them for battle。 No alarms Of bugles察 no high
flags察no clamorous haste Only a lift and flare of eyes that faced The sun察
like a friend with whom their love is done。 O larger shone that smile
against the sun察 Mightier than his whose bounty these have spurned。
So察soon they topped the hill察and raced together Over an open stretch
of herb and heather Exposed。 And instantly the whole sky burned With
fury against them察 and soft sudden cups Opened in thousands for their
blood察 and the green slopes Chasmed and steepened sheer to infinite
space。
Of them who running on that last high place Leapt to swift unseen
bullets察or went up On the hot blast and fury of hell's upsurge察Or plunged
and fell away past this world's verge察 Some say God caught them even
before they fell。
But what say such as from existence' brink Ventured but drave too
swift to sink。 The few who rushed in the body to enter hell察And there out´
fiending all its fiends and flames With superhuman inhumanities察 Long´
famous glories察immemorial shames And crawling slowly back察have by

The Chances
I mind as 'ow the night afore that show Us five got talking察 we was
in the know察 Over the top to´morrer察boys察we're for it察First wave we are察
first ruddy wave察 that's tore it。; ;Ah well察─ says Jimmy察 an' 'e's seen
some scrappin' ;There ain't more nor five things as can 'appen察Ye get
knocked out察else wounded bad or cushy察Scuppered察or nowt except yer
feeling mushy。;
One of us got the knock´out察blown to chops。 T'other was hurt察like察
losin' both 'is props。 An' one察 to use the word of 'ypocrites察 'Ad the

young Jim察'e's livin' an' 'e's not察'E reckoned 'e'd five chances察an' 'e's 'ad察
'E's wounded察killed察and pris'ner察all the lot The ruddy lot all rolled in
one。 Jim's mad。

;I will to the King察And offer him consolation in his trouble察For that
man there has set his teeth to die察And being one that hates obedience察
Discipline察and orderliness of life察I cannot mourn him。; W。 B。 Yeats。
Patting goodbye察doubtless they told the lad He'd always show the Hun
a brave man's face察Father would sooner him dead than in disgrace察 Was
proud to see him going察 aye察 and glad。 Perhaps his Mother whimpered
how she'd fret Until he got a nice察safe wound to nurse。 Sisters would wish
girls too could shoot察 charge察 curse察 。 。 Brothers would send his
favourite cigarette察Each week察month after month察they wrote the same察
Thinking him sheltered in some Y。M。 Hut察Where once an hour a bullet
missed its aim And misses teased the hunger of his brain。 His eyes grew
old with wincing察 and his hand Reckless with ague。 Courage leaked察 as
sand From the best sandbags after years of rain。 But never leave察wound察
fever察 trench´foot察 shock察 Untrapped the wretch。 And death seemed still
withheld For torture of lying machinally shelled察At the pleasure of this
world's Powers who'd run amok。
He'd seen men shoot their hands察on night patrol察Their people never
knew。 Yet they were vile。 ;Death sooner than dishonour察that's the style ─
So Father said。
One dawn察 our wire patrol Carried him。 This time察 Death had not
missed。 We could do nothing察 but wipe his bleeding cough。 Could it be
accident拭 Rifles go off 。 。 。 Not sniped拭 No。 Later they found the
English ball。
It was the reasoned crisis of his soul。 Against the fires that would not
burn him whole But kept him for death's perjury and scoff And life's half´
promising察and both their riling。
With him they buried the muzzle his teeth had kissed察And truthfully
wrote the Mother ;Tim died smiling。;

Futility
Move him into the sun Gently its touch awoke him once察At home察
whispering of fields unsown。 Always it woke him察even in France察Until
this morning and this snow。 If anything might rouse him now The kind old
sun will know。
Think how it wakes the seeds Woke察once察the clays of a cold star。
Are limbs so dear´achieved察are sides Full´nerved察 still warm察 too hard
to stir拭 Was it for this the clay grew tall拭 O what made fatuous
sunbeams toil To break earth's sleep at all拭

;When this war is done The men's first instinct will be making homes。
Meanwhile their foremost need is aerodromes察It being certain war has just
begun。 Peace would do wrong to our undying dead察 The sons we offered
might regret they died If we got nothing lasting in their stead。 We must be
solidly indemnified。 Though all be worthy Victory which all bought察We
rulers sitting in this ancient spot Would wrong our very selves if we forgot
The greatest glory will be theirs who fought察 Who kept this nation in
integrity。; Nation拭 The half´limbed readers did not chafe But smiled at
one another curiously Like secret men who know their secret safe。 This is
the thing they know and never speak察That England one by one had fled to
France Not many elsewhere now save under France。 Pictures of these
broad smiles appear each week察And people in whose voice real feeling
rings Say此How they smile They're happy now察poor things。

Conscious
His fingers wake察and flutter up the bed。 His eyes come open with a
pull of will察Helped by the yellow may´flowers by his head。 A blind´cord
drawls across the window´sill 。 。 。 How smooth the floor of the ward is
what a rug And who's that talking察somewhere out of sight拭Why are they
laughing拭 What's inside that jug拭 Nurse Doctor ─ Yes察 all right察 all
right。;
But sudden dusk bewilders all the air There seems no time to want a
drink of water。 Nurse looks so far away。 And everywhere Music and roses
burnt through crimson slaughter。 Cold察cold察he's cold察and yet so hot此And
there's no light to see the voices by No time to dream察 and ask he
knows not what。

Being the philosophy of many Soldiers。
Sit on the bed察I'm blind察and three parts shell察Be careful察can't shake
hands now察never shall。 Both arms have mutinied against me brutes。 My
fingers fidget like ten idle brats。
I tried to peg out soldierly no use One dies of war like any old
