1АNow in India察Fa´hien used the Indian measure of distance察but it is

not possible to determine exactly what its length then was。 The estimates

of it are very different察and vary from four and a half or five miles to seven察

and sometimes more。 See the subject exhaustively treated in Davids'

;Ceylon Coins and Measures察─pp。 15´17。

and so Davids'the clean little hut where the mendicant lives。; Our author察

however察 does not use the Indian name here察 but the Chinese characters

which express its meaningtsing shay察 a pure dwelling。; He uses the term

occasionally察and evidently察in this sense察more frequently it occurs in his

narrative in connexion with the Buddhist relic worship察 and at first I

translated it by ;shrine; and ;shrine´house察─but I came to the conclusion察

at last察to employ always the Indian name。 The first time I saw a shrine´

house was察I think察in a monastery near Foo´chowa small pyramidical

structure察about ten feet high察glittering as if with the precious substances察

but all察 it seemed to me察 of tinsel。 It was in a large apartment of the

building察 having many images in it。 The monks said it was the most

precious thing in their possession察and that if they opened it察as I begged

them to do察 there would be a convulsion that would destroy the whole

establishment。 See E。 H。察p。 166。 The name of the province of Behar was

given to it in consequence of its many viharas。

     4АAccording to the characters察 square察round察four inches。; Hsuan´

employed in the phrase for ;to degrade an officer察─that is察 to remove the

the crown is a Buddhistic form of religious homage。

stages on the way to nirvana。 The tope in the text would be emblematic in

some way of the general idea of the mental progress conducting to the

Buddhistic consummation of existence。

without a teacher察 and without being able to save others。 As the ideal

hermit察the Pratyeka Buddha is compared with the rhinoceros khadga that

lives lonely in the wilderness。 He is also called Nidana Buddha察as having

mastered the twelve nidanas the twelve links in the everlasting chain of

cause and effect in the whole range of existence察 the understanding of

which solves the riddle of life察 revealing the inanity of all forms of

without察 however察 touching the bottom of the river。 Thus in crossing

samsara he 'suppresses the errors of life and thought察 and the effects of

habit and passion察without attaining to absolute perfection。'; Whether these

Buddhas were unknown察 as Eitel says察 to primitive Buddhism察 may be

doubted。 See Davids' Hibbert Lectures察p。 146。

DEATH OF HWUY´KING IN THE LITTLE SNOWY MOUNTAINS。

LO´E。 POHNA。 CROSSING THE INDUS TO THE EAST。

Having stayed there till the third month of winter察Fa´hien and the two

others撮1Аproceeding southwards察crossed the Little Snowy mountains。2А

On them the snow lies accumulated both winter and summer。 On the north

side of the mountains察 in the shade察 they suddenly encountered a cold

wind which made them shiver and become unable to speak。 Hwuy´king

could not go any farther。 A white froth came from his mouth察and he said

to Fa´hien察 I cannot live any longer。 Do you immediately go away察that

we do not all die here察─and with these words he died。3АFa´hien stroked

the corpse察 and cried out piteously察 Our original plan has failedit is

fate。4А What can we do拭─ He then again exerted himself察 and they

succeeded in crossing to the south of the range察and arrived in the kingdom

of Lo´e撮5А where there were nearly three thousand monks察 students of

both the mahayana and hinayana。 Here they stayed for the summer

retreat撮6Аand when that was over察they went on to the south察and ten days'

journey brought them to the kingdom of Poh´na撮7Аwhere there are also

more than three thousand monks察all students of the hinayana。 Proceeding

from this place for three days察 they again crossed the Indus察 where the

country on each side was low and level。8А

The term implies a factor察or fa´tor察and supposes the ordination of Heaven
