BHIDA。 SYMPATHY OF MONKS WITH THE PILGRIMS。
After they had crossed the river察there was a country named Pe´ t'oo撮1А
where Buddhism was very flourishing察and the monks studied both the
mahayana and hinayana。 When they saw their fellow´disciples from Ts'in
passing along察 they were moved with great pity and sympathy察 and
expressed themselves thus此 How is it that these men from a border´land
should have learned to become monks撮2А and come for the sake of our
doctrines from such a distance in search of the Law of Buddha拭─ They
supplied them with what they needed察and treated them in accordance with
the rules of the Law。

CHAPTER XVI
ON TO MATHURA OR MUTTRA。 CONDITION AND CUSTOMS
OF CENTRAL INDIA察 OF THE MONKS察 VIHARAS察 AND
MONASTERIES。
From this place they travelled south´east察passing by a succession of
very many monasteries察with a multitude of monks察who might be counted
by myriads。 After passing all these places察they came to a country named
Ma´t'aou´lo。1АThey still followed the course of the P'oo´na2Аriver察on
the banks of which察left and right察there were twenty monasteries察which
might contain three thousand monks察and here the Law of Buddha was
still more flourishing。 Everywhere察 from the Sandy Desert察 in all the
countries of India察 the kings had been firm believers in that Law。 When
they make their offerings to a community of monks察 they take off their
royal caps察and along with their relatives and ministers察supply them with
food with their own hands。 That done察。the king has a carpet spread for
himself on the ground察and sits down in front of the chairmanthey dare
not presume to sit on couches in front of the community。 The laws and
ways察according to which the kings presented their offerings when Buddha
was in the world察have been handed down to the present day。
All south from this is named the Middle Kingdom。3А In it the cold
and heat are finely tempered察and there is neither hoarfrost nor snow。 The
people are numerous and happy察they have not to register their households察
or attend to any magistrates and their rules察only those who cultivate the
royal land have to pay a portion of the grain from it。 If they want to go察
they go察 if they want to stay on察 they stay。 The king governs without
decapitation or other corporal punishments。 Criminals are simply fined察
lightly or heavily察according to the circumstances of each case。 Even in
cases of repeated attempts at wicked rebellion察they only have their right
hands cut off。 The king's body´guards and attendants all have salaries。
Throughout the whole country the people do not kill any living creature察
nor drink intoxicating liquor察nor eat onions or garlic。 The only exception
is that of the Chandalas。4АThat is the name for those who are held to be
wicked men察and live apart from others。 When they enter the gate of a city
66

or a market´place察they strike a piece of wood to make themselves known察
so that men know and avoid them察and do not come into contact with them。
In that country they do not keep pigs and fowls察and do not sell live cattle察
in the markets there are no butchers' shops and no dealers in intoxicating
drink。 In buying and selling commodities they use cowries。5А Only the
Chandalas are fishermen and hunters察and sell flesh meat。
After Buddha attained to pari´nirvana撮6А the kings of the various
countries and the heads of the Vaisyas7Аbuilt viharas for the priests察and
endowed them with fields察houses察gardens察and orchards察along with the
resident populations and their cattle察the grants being engraved on plates of
metal撮8А so that afterwards they were handed down from king to king察
without any daring to annul them察 and they remain even to the present
time。
The regular business of the monks is to perform acts of meritorious
virtue察and to recite their Sutras and sit wrapt in meditation。 When stranger
monks arrive at any monastery察the old residents meet and receive them察
carry for them their clothes and alms´bowl察give them water to wash their
feet察oil with which to anoint them察and the liquid food permitted out of
the regular hours。9А When the stranger has enjoyed a very brief rest察
they further ask the number of years that he has been a monk察after which
he receives a sleeping apartment with its appurtenances察according to his
regular order察 and everything is done for him which the rules
prescribe。10А
Where a community of monks resides察 they erect topes to
Sariputtra撮11Аto Maha´maudgalyayana撮12Аand to Ananda撮13Аand also
topes in honour of the Abhidharma察the Vinaya察and the Sutras。 A month
after the annual season of rest察 the families which are looking out for
blessing stimulate one another14А to make offerings to the monks察 and
send round to them the liquid food which may be taken out of the ordinary
hours。 All the monks come together in a great assembly察and preach the
Law撮15Аafter which offerings are presented at the tope of Sariputtra察with
all kinds of flowers and incense。 All through the night lamps are kept
burning察and skilful musicians are employed to perform。16А
When Sariputtra was a great Brahman察he went to Buddha察and begged

to be permitted to quit his family and become a monk。 The great
Mugalan and the great Kasyapa17Аalso did the same。 The bhikshunis18А
for the most part make their offerings at the tope of Ananda察 because it
was he who requested the World´honoured one to allow females to quit
their families and become nuns。 The Sramaneras19Аmostly make their
offerings to Rahula。20А The professors of the Abhidharma make their
offerings to it察 those of the Vinaya to it。 Every year there is one such
offering察and each class has its own day for it。 Students of the mahayana
present offerings to the Prajna´paramita撮21А to Manjusri撮22А and to
Kwan´she´yin。23А When the monks have done receiving their annual
tribute from the harvests撮24А the Heads of the Vaisyas and all the
Brahmans bring clothes and other such articles as the monks require for
use察 and distribute among them。 The monks察 having received them察 also
proceed to give portions to one another。 From the nirvana of Buddha撮25А
the forms of ceremony察 laws察 and rules察 practised by the sacred
communities察 have been handed down from one generation to another
without interruption。
From the place where the travellers crossed the Indus to Southern
India察and on to the Southern Sea察a distance of forty or fifty thousand le察
all is level plain。 There are no large hills with streams among them察there
are simply the waters of the rivers。
