CHAPTER XXIII
RAMA察AND ITS TOPE。
East from Buddha's birthplace察and at a distance of five yojanas察there
is a kingdom called Rama。1АThe king of this country察 having obtained
one portion of the relics of Buddha's body撮2А returned with it and built
over it a tope察named the Rama tope。 By the side of it there was a pool察
and in the pool a dragon察which constantly kept watch over the tope察and
presented offerings to it day and night。 When king Asoka came forth into
the world察 he wished to destroy the eight topes over the relics察 and to
build instead of them 84000 topes。3АAfter he had thrown down the
seven others察he wished next to destroy this tope。 But then the dragon
showed itself察took the king into its palace撮4Аand when he had seen all
the things provided for offerings察it said to him察 If you are able with your
offerings to exceed these察you can destroy the tope察and take it all away。 I
will not contend with you。; The king察however察knew that such appliances
for offerings were not to be had anywhere in the world察 and thereupon
returned without carrying out his purpose。
Afterwards察the ground all about became overgrown with vegetation察
and there was nobody to sprinkle and sweep about the tope察but a herd of
elephants came regularly察which brought water with their trunks to water
the ground察 and various kinds of flowers and incense察 which they
presented at the tope。 Once there came from one of the kingdoms a
devotee5Аto worship at the tope。 When he encountered the elephants he
was greatly alarmed察and screened himself among the trees察but when he
saw them go through with the offerings in the most proper manner察 the
thought filled him with great sadnessthat there should be no monastery
here察。the inmates of which might serve the tope察but the elephants have
to do the watering and sweeping。 Forthwith he gave up the great
prohibitions by which he was bound撮6А and resumed the status of a
Sramanera。7АWith his own hands he cleared away the grass and trees察put
the place in good order察and made it pure and clean。 By the power of his
exhortations察he prevailed on the king of the country to form a residence
for monks察and when that was done察he became head of the monastery。 At

the present day there are monks residing in it。 This event is of recent
occurrence察 but in all the succession from that time till now察 there has
always been a Sramanera head of the establishment。

3АThe bones of the human body are supposed to consist of 84000
atoms察and hence the legend of Asoka's wish to build 84000 topes察 one
over each atom of Sakyamuni's skeleton。
4АFa´hien察it appears to me察intended his readers to understand that
the naga´guardian had a palace of his own察inside or underneath the pool
or tank。
5А It stands out on the narrative as a whole that we have not here
;some pilgrims察─but one devotee。
6АWhat the ;great prohibitions; which the devotee now gave up were
we cannot tell。 Being what he was察a monk of more than ordinary ascetical
habits察he may have undertaken peculiar and difficult vows。

CHAPTER XXIV
WHERE BUDDHA FINALLY RENOUNCED THE WORLD察AND
WHERE HE DIED。
East from here four yojanas察there is the place where the heir´ apparent
sent back Chandaka察 with his white horse撮1А and there also a tope was
erected。
Four yojanas to the east from this察。the travellers came to the Charcoal
tope撮2Аwhere there is also a monastery。
Going on twelve yojanas察 still to the east察 they came to the city of
Kusanagara撮3Аon the north of which察between two trees撮4Аon the bank
of the Nairanjana5А river察 is the place where the World´honoured one察
with his head to the north察attained to pari´nirvana and died。 There also
are the places where Subhadra撮6А the last of his converts察 attained to
Wisdom and became an Arhat察 where in his coffin of gold they made
offerings to the World´honoured one for seven days撮7А where the
Vajrapani laid aside his golden club撮8А and where the eight kings9А
divided the relics of the burnt bodyat all these places were built topes
and monasteries察all of which are now existing。
In the city the inhabitants are few and far between察 comprising only
the families belonging to the different societies of monks。
Going from this to the south´east for twelve yojanas察they came to the
place where the Lichchhavis10Аwished to follow Buddha to the place of
his pari´nirvana察 and where察 when he would not listen to them and they
kept cleaving to him察unwilling to go away察he made to appear a large and
deep ditch which they could not cross over察and gave them his alms´bowl察
as a pledge of his regard察。thus sending them back to their families。 There
a stone pillar was erected with an account of this event engraved upon it。

NOTES
1АThis was on the night when Sakyamuni finally left his palace and
family to fulfil the course to which he felt that he was called。 Chandaka察in
Pali Channa察 was the prince's charioteer察 and in sympathy with him。 So
also was the white horse Kanthaka Kanthakanam Asvaraja察 which
neighed his delight till the devas heard him。 See M。 B。察pp。 158´161察and
Davids' Manual察pp。 32察33。 According to ;Buddhist Birth Stories察─p。 87察
the noble horse never returned to the city察but died of grief at being left by
his master察 to be reborn immediately in the Trayastrimsas heaven as the
deva Kanthaka

to learn from Buddha the very night he died。 Ananda would have repulsed
him察but Buddha ordered him to be introduced察and then putting aside the
ingenious but unimportant question which he propounded察 preached to
him the Law。 The Brahman was converted and attained at once to
Arhatship。 Eitel says that he attained to nirvana a few moments before
Sakyamuni察 but see the full account of him and his conversion in

Indra or Sakra。 He therefore察 that great protector of Buddhism察 would
seem to be intended here察 but the difficulty with me is that neither in
