triumph through Persepolis。 Exeunt all except TAMBURLAINE察

THERIDAMAS察TECHELLES察and USUMCASANE。А

TAMBURLAINE。 And ride in triumph through Persepolis Is it not

brave to be a king察 Techelles拭 Usumcasane and Theridamas察 Is it not

passing brave to be a king察And ride in triumph through Persepolis拭

TECHELLES。 O察my lord察it is sweet and full of pomp

USUMCASANE。 To be a king is half to be a god。

THERIDAMAS。 A god is not so glorious as a king此 I think the

pleasure they enjoy in heaven察Cannot compare with kingly joys in

earth察 To wear a crown enchas'd with pearl and gold察 Whose virtues

carry with it life and death察 To ask and have察 command and be obey'd察

When looks breed love察 with looks to gain the prize察 Such power

attractive shines in princes' eyes。

TAMBURLAINE。 Why察say察Theridamas察wilt thou be a king拭

THERIDAMAS。 Nay察though I praise it察I can live without it。

TAMBURLAINE。 What say my other friends拭will you be kings拭

TECHELLES。 I察if I could察with all my heart察my lord。

TAMBURLAINE。 Why察that's well said察Techelles此so would I察And

so would you察my masters察would you not拭

     USUMCASANE。 What察then察my lord拭

TAMBURLAINE。 Why察then察Casane察shall we wish for aught

The world affords in greatest novelty察 And rest attemptless察 faint察 and

destitute拭Methinks we should not。 I am strongly mov'd察That if I should

desire the Persian crown察 I could attain it with a wondrous ease此 And

would not all our soldiers soon consent察 If we should aim at such a

dignity拭

THERIDAMAS。 I know they would with our persuasions。

TAMBURLAINE。 Why察 then察 Theridamas察 I'll first assay To get the

Persian kingdom to myself察 Then thou for Parthia察 they for Scythia and

Media察And察if I prosper察all shall be as sure As if the Turk察the Pope察Afric察

and Greece察Came creeping to us with their crowns a´piece。

TECHELLES。 Then shall we send to this triumphing king察And bid

him battle for his novel crown拭

USUMCASANE。 Nay察quickly察then察before his room be hot。

TAMBURLAINE。 'Twill prove a pretty jest察in faith察my friends。

THERIDAMAS。 A jest to charge on twenty thousand men I judge the

purchase more important far。

TAMBURLAINE。 Judge by thyself察 Theridamas察 not me察 For

presently Techelles here shall haste To bid him battle ere he pass too far察

And lose more labour than the gain will quite此Then shalt thou see

this Scythian Tamburlaine Make but a jest to win the Persian

crown。 Techelles察 take a thousand horse with thee察 And bid him turn

him back to war with us察That only made him king to make us sport此

We will not steal upon him cowardly察 But give him warning and

more warriors此 Haste thee察 Techelles察 we will follow thee。 Exit

                                      SCENE VI。

       Enter COSROE察MEANDER察ORTYGIUS察and MENAPHON察with

SOLDIERS。

COSROE。 What means this devilish shepherd察to aspire With such a

giantly presumption察To cast up hills against the face of heaven察And dare

the force of angry Jupiter拭But察as he thrust them underneath the hills察And

press'd out fire from their burning jaws察 So will I send this monstrous

slave to hell察Where flames shall ever feed upon his soul。

MEANDER。 Some powers divine察or else infernal察mix'd Their angry

seeds at his conception察 For he was never sprung of human race察

Since with the spirit of his fearful pride察 He dares so doubtlessly

resolve of rule察And by profession be ambitious。

ORTYGIUS。 What god察 or fiend察 or spirit of the earth察 Or monster

turned to a manly shape察Or of what mould or mettle he be made察What

star or fate soever govern him察Let us put on our meet encountering

minds察 And察 in detesting such a devilish thief察 In love of honour and

defence of right察 Be arm'd against the hate of such a foe察Whether from

earth察or hell察or heaven he grow。

COSROE。 Nobly resolv'd察my good Ortygius察And察since we all have

suck'd one wholesome air察 And with the same proportion of elements

Resolve察I hope we are resembled察Vowing our loves to equal death

and life。 Let's cheer our soldiers to encounter him察That grievous image of

ingratitude察That fiery thirster after sovereignty察And burn him in the fury

of that flame That none can quench but blood and empery。 Resolve察my

lords and loving soldiers察now To save your king and country from decay。

Then strike up察drum察and all the stars that make The loathsome circle of

my dated life察 Direct my weapon to his barbarous heart察 That thus

opposeth him against the gods察And scorns the powers that govern Persia

Alarms of battle within。 Then enter COSROE wounded察

TAMBURLAINE察THERIDAMAS察TECHELLES察USUMCASANE察with

others。

COSROE。 Barbarous and bloody Tamburlaine察Thus to deprive

me of my crown and life Treacherous and false Theridamas察Even at the

morning of my happy state察 Scarce being seated in my royal throne察To

work my downfall and untimely end An uncouth pain torments my

grieved soul察And death arrests the organ of my voice察Who察entering at

the breach thy sword hath made察Sacks every vein and artier of my

heart。 Bloody and insatiate Tamburlaine

TAMBURLAINE。 The thirst of reign and sweetness of a crown察That

caus'd the eldest son of heavenly Ops To thrust his doting father from his

chair察And place himself in the empyreal heaven察 Mov'd me to manage

arms against thy state。 What better precedent than mighty Jove拭 Nature察

that fram'd us of four elements Warring within our breasts for

regiment察 Doth teach us all to have aspiring minds此 Our souls察

whose faculties can comprehend The wondrous architecture of the world察

And measure every wandering planet's course察 Still climbing after

knowledge infinite察And always moving as the restless spheres察Will us to

wear ourselves察and never rest察Until we reach the ripest fruit of all察

That perfect bliss and sole felicity察The sweet fruition of an earthly crown。

THERIDAMAS。 And that made me to join with Tamburlaine察For he

is gross and like the massy earth That moves not upwards察nor by princely

deeds Doth mean to soar above the highest sort。

TECHELLES。 And that made us察 the friends of Tamburlaine察To lift

our swords against the Persian king。

USUMCASANE。 For as察 when Jove did thrust old Saturn down察

Neptune and Dis gain'd each of them a crown察So do we hope to reign in

Asia察If Tamburlaine be plac'd in Persia。

COSROE。 The strangest men that ever nature made I know not how

to take their tyrannies。 My bloodless body waxeth chill and cold察And with

my blood my life slides through my wound察My soul begins to take her

which did feed each other察 For want of nourishment to feed them both察

Are dry and cold察 and now doth ghastly Death With greedy

talents gripe my bleeding heart察And like a harpy tires on my

life。 Theridamas and Tamburlaine察 I die此 And fearful vengeance light

upon you both 。Dies。TAMBURLAINE takes COSROE'S crown察 and

puts it on his own head。А

TAMBURLAINE。 Not all the curses which the Furies breathe

Shall make me leave so rich a prize as this。 Theridamas察Techelles察and the

rest察Who think you now is king of Persia拭

     ALL。 Tamburlaine Tamburlaine

TAMBURLAINE。 Though Mars himself察the angry god of arms察And

all the earthly potentates conspire To dispossess me of this diadem察Yet

will I wear it in despite of them察As great commander of this eastern world察

If you but say that Tamburlaine shall reign。

TAMBURLAINE。 So察 now it is more surer on my head Than if the

gods had held a parliament察 And all pronounc'd me king of Persia。
