through long silken lashes察her hair was shining brown察and her features
regular and striking察there was an air of innocent gaiety that played about
her countenance察where good humour sat triumphant。
;I have been mistaken察─ said Montraville。 ;I imagined I loved
Charlotte此but alas I am now too late convinced my attachment to her was
merely the impulse of the moment。 I fear I have not only entailed lasting
misery on that poor girl察but also thrown a barrier in the way of my own
happiness察 which it will be impossible to surmount。 I feel I love Julia
Franklin with ardour and sincerity察 yet察 when in her presence察 I am
sensible of my own inability to offer a heart worthy her acceptance察and
remain silent。; Full of these painful thoughts察Montraville walked out to
see Charlotte此 she saw him approach察 and ran out to meet him此 she
banished from her countenance the air of discontent which ever appeared
when he was absent察and met him with a smile of joy。
;I thought you had forgot me察 Montraville察─said she察 and was very
unhappy。;
;I shall never forget you察Charlotte察─he replied察pressing her hand。
The uncommon gravity of his countenance察and the brevity of his reply察
alarmed her。
;You are not well察─said she察 your hand is hot察your eyes are heavy察
you are very ill。 ;
;I am a villain察─ said he mentally察 as he turned from her to hide his
emotions。
;But come察─continued she tenderly察 you shall go to bed察and I will sit
by察and watch you察you will be better when you have slept。 ;
Montraville was glad to retire察 and by pretending sleep察 hide the
agitation of his mind from her penetrating eye。 Charlotte watched by him
till a late hour察 and then察 lying softly down by his side察 sunk into a
profound sleep察from whence she awoke not till late the next morning。
CHAPTER XX。
Virtue never appears so amiable as when reaching forth her hand
to raise a fallen sister。 CHAPTER OF ACCIDENTS。
WHEN Charlotte awoke察she missed Montraville察but thinking he

might have arisen early to enjoy the beauties of the morning察she was
preparing to follow him察when casting her eye on the table察she saw a
note察and opening it hastily察found these words
;My dear Charlotte must not be surprised察if she does not see me again
for some time此 unavoidable business will prevent me that pleasure此 be
assured I am quite well this morning察 and what your fond imagination
magnified into illness察was nothing more than fatigue察which a few hours
rest has entirely removed。 Make yourself happy察 and be certain of the
unalterable friendship of ;MONTRAVILLE。;
;FRIENDSHIP ─said Charlotte emphatically察as she finished the note察
;is it come to this at last拭Alas poor察forsaken Charlotte察thy doom is now
but too apparent。 Montraville is no longer interested in thy happiness察and
shame察 remorse察 and disappointed love will henceforth be thy only
attendants。 ;
Though these were the ideas that involuntarily rushed upon the mind
of Charlotte as she perused the fatal note察yet after a few hours had elapsed察
the syren Hope again took possession of her bosom察 and she flattered
herself she could察on a second perusal察discover an air of tenderness in the
few lines he had left察which at first had escaped her notice。
;He certainly cannot be so base as to leave me察─ said she察 and in
stiling himself my friend does he not promise to protect me。 I will not
torment myself with these causeless fears察I will place a confidence in his
honour察and sure he will not be so unjust as to abuse it。;
Just as she had by this manner of reasoning brought her mind to some
tolerable degree of composure察she was surprised by a visit from Belcour。
The dejection visible in Charlotte's countenance察 her swoln eyes and
neglected attire察at once told him she was unhappy此he made no doubt but
Montraville had察 by his coldness察 alarmed her suspicions察 and was
resolved察 if possible察 to rouse her to jealousy察 urge her to reproach him察
and by that means occasion a breach between them。 ;If I can once
convince her that she has a rival察─said he察 she will listen to my passion if
it is only to revenge his slights。; Belcour knew but little of the female
heart察and what he did know was only of those of loose and dissolute lives。
He had no idea that a woman might fall a victim to imprudence察and yet

retain so strong a sense of honour察as to reject with horror and contempt
every solicitation to a second fault。 He never imagined that a gentle察
generous female heart察 once tenderly attached察 when treated with
unkindness might break察but would never harbour a thought of revenge。
His visit was not long察but before he went he fixed a scorpion in the
heart of Charlotte察whose venom embittered every future hour of her life。
We will now return for a moment to Colonel Crayton。 He had been
three months married察 and in that little time had discovered that the
conduct of his lady was not so prudent as it ought to have been此 but
remonstrance was vain察her temper was violent察and to the Colonel's great
misfortune he had conceived a sincere affection for her此she saw her own
power察and察with the art of a Circe察made every action appear to him in
what light she pleased此 his acquaintance laughed at his blindness察 his
friends pitied his infatuation察 his amiable daughter察 Mrs。 Beauchamp察 in
secret deplored the loss of her father's affection察and grieved that he should
be so entirely swayed by an artful察 and察 she much feared察 infamous
woman。
Mrs。 Beauchamp was mild and engaging察she loved not the hurry and
bustle of a city察and had prevailed on her husband to take a house a few
miles from New´York。 Chance led her into the same neighbourhood with
Charlotte察their houses stood within a short space of each other察and their
gardens joined此 she had not been long in her new habitation before the
figure of Charlotte struck her察she recollected her interesting features察she
saw the melancholy so conspicuous in her countenance察and her heart bled
at the reflection察 that perhaps deprived of honour察 friends察 all that was
valuable in life察she was doomed to linger out a wretched existence in a
strange land察and sink broken´hearted into an untimely grave。 ;Would to
heaven I could snatch her from so hard a fate察─said she察 but the merciless
world has barred the doors of compassion against a poor weak girl察who察
perhaps察had she one kind friend to raise and reassure her察would gladly
return to peace and virtue察 nay察 even the woman who dares to pity察 and
endeavour to recall a wandering sister察incurs the sneer of contempt and
ridicule察for an action in which even angels are said to rejoice。;
The longer Mrs。 Beauchamp was a witness to the solitary life

Charlotte led察the more she wished to speak to her察and often as she saw
her cheeks wet with the tears of anguish察she would say;Dear sufferer察
how gladly would I pour into your heart the balm of consolation察were it
not for the fear of derision。;
But an accident soon happened which made her resolve to brave even
the scoffs of the world察rather than not enjoy the heavenly satisfaction of
comforting a desponding fellow´creature。
Mrs。 Beauchamp was an early riser。 She was one morning walking in
the garden察 leaning on her husband's arm察 when the sound of a harp
attracted their notice此they listened attentively察and heard a soft melodious
voice distinctly sing the following stanzas此
Thou glorious orb察 supremely bright察 Just rising from the sea察 To
chear all nature with thy light察 What are thy beams to me拭 In vain thy
glories bid me rise察To hail the new´born day察Alas my morning sacrifice
Is still to weep and pray。 For what are nature's charms combin'd察To one察
whose weary breast Can neither peace nor comfort find察 Nor friend
whereon to rest拭Oh never never whilst I live Can my heart's anguish
cease此Come察friendly death察thy mandate give察And let me be at peace。
;'Tis poor Charlotte ─ said Mrs。 Beauchamp察 the pellucid drop of
humanity stealing down her cheek。
Captain Beauchamp was alarmed at her emotion。 ;What Charlotte拭─
said he察 do you know her拭─
In the accent of a pitying angel did she disclose to her husband
Charlotte's unhappy situation察 and the frequent wish she had formed of
being serviceable to her。 ;I fear察─
